Some Factors Influencing The Abundance Of Waterfowl Along The Mississippi River In Iowa, Thomas J. Morrissey Jan 1947

Some Factors Influencing The Abundance Of Waterfowl Along The Mississippi River In Iowa, Thomas J. Morrissey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to determine some of the factors influencing waterfowl abundance in eastern Iowa, field studies were made of migrating ducks during the years 1940-1945. A study area was selected on the Mississippi River 20 miles north of Davenport, Iowa, and near the town of Princeton, Iowa. The study area, a low-land meadow and marsh, is 5 miles in length and 1½ miles in width. It is known locally as the Princeton Marsh. Additional observations were made at scattered points along the Mississippi from Dubuque south to Keokuk, Iowa; on the Wapsipinicon River for a few miles above its mouth; …

An Ant Colony Which Moved Over Two Hundred Feet, R. M. Sallee, R. L. King Jan 1947

An Ant Colony Which Moved Over Two Hundred Feet, R. M. Sallee, R. L. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Colonies of Formica rufa melanotica Emery construct the most conspicuous ant nests in the region of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory; 85 nests of this species have been found in 40 acres of prairie. These nests are often two feet in diameter: a thatched mound composed of short lengths of grass, twigs and other plant debris; well-developed mounds are often 18 inches high with an outer rampart of earth upon which the plant material forms a thatch. More numerous than these nests of melanotica are the smaller earthen mounds of the prairie ant, Formica cinerea neocinerea Wheeler: 72 nests of the …

Late Fall And Winter Birds Records, For 1941 To 1947, In The Upper Missouri Valley, T. C. Stephens, Wm. Youngworth

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present paper is the ninth contribution in a series of reports on the winter bird life in a section of the Upper Missouri Valley, with particular emphasis on the area contiguous to Sioux City, Iowa. The area includes parts of three state (Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska). The time covered by the nine reports is now thirty years. As in earlier papers the annual period covered is from November 1 to March 1-four months. But in a few cases we have included interesting records just outside of these limits. The area included is not well defined, for we have …

The Temperature Of The Mouse In Health And Disease, J. A. Weir Dec 1946

The Temperature Of The Mouse In Health And Disease, J. A. Weir

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Accompanying certain types of inflammation the heat-regulating mechanism of the body is disrupted so that heat accumulates and the body temperature rises. The individual is said to have a fever. Since the early work of Ledingham (1908) in which he showed that the rate of phagocytosis increased with a rise in temperature, a moderate fever has come to be regarded as a defense mechanism of the body. It is, therefore, of some significance that the normal and deviations from normal temperature be known for laboratory animals which are to be used to measure the response of an individual host to …

The Addition Of Amines To Ethylenimine, Zella A. Hicks, George H. Coleman Jan 1946

The Addition Of Amines To Ethylenimine, Zella A. Hicks, George H. Coleman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several addition reactions of ethylenimine with various amino compounds, using water as a catalyst have been reported by Wilson (1). Substituted diamines have been prepared most commonly by a Gabriel Synthesis (2) from primary and secondary amines and B-bromoethylphthalimide, and through the reaction of ethylene oxide with amines to form ethanolamine from which the diamine could be prepared (3). However, the addition of primary and secondary amines to ethylenimine represents a direct and simple method for their preparation, providing satisfactory yields can be obtained. In the present work, a study of this addition reaction as catalyzed by aluminum chloride has …

Relation Of Cynicism To Certain Other Variables, Charles O. Neidt Jan 1946

Relation Of Cynicism To Certain Other Variables, Charles O. Neidt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is not uncommon to hear the remark "He's a cynic", or "He has a cynical attitude" expressed in everyday conversation. During the course of an investigation designed to develop a test of cynicism, certain data were available for study in connection with cynical responses. These data were analyzed to answer several questions concerning cynicism and certain other variables. For example, are college men more cynical than women? What is the relation to religion, politics, and marriage? Does cynicism increase with age-or education?

New Reports Of Iowa Fungi. Ii, Horace L. Barnett Jan 1946

New Reports Of Iowa Fungi. Ii, Horace L. Barnett

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This article is based upon a study of the Basidiomycetes (except the Agaricaceae) and some groups of Ascomycetes in the mycological collection of the late Professor B. Shimek. It includes reports on fungi belonging to the families Clavariaseae, Thelephoraceae, Polyporaceae and Phyllachoraceae. A previous article (1) included reports on the Gasteromyceteae and Uredinales. I find no record of any of the species herein reported having been collected in Iowa and no Iowa collections (except Phyllachora Boutelouae, see below) of these species were included in the State University Mycological Herbarium. All of the collections mentioned in this report have now …

The Asters Of Iowa, Gertrude E. Kellogg Jan 1946

The Asters Of Iowa, Gertrude E. Kellogg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This taxonomic study is concerned with all the species of Aster known by the writer to occur in Iowa. It is an endeavor, first, to provide a useful key to the species of this genus known to be found in Iowa, second, to present an up-to-date nomenclature of the species, and third, to show the distribution of the species of Aster in Iowa as recorded in the collections studied. Deam's "Flora of Indiana" has been used for the sequence of species, and the key has been largely adapted from his. Research work by recent botanists has shown that some of …

Fertile Green Shoots Of Equisetum Arvense, G. W. Martin Jan 1946

Fertile Green Shoots Of Equisetum Arvense, G. W. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The common field horsetail, Equisetum arvense L., as is well known, produces in early spring fertile shoots almost destitute of chlorophyll. After shedding their spores, these quickly wither and are succeeded by the sterile, branched, vegetative shoots which persist until late autumn. Early in May, 1943, Mr. George Coffey, then a graduate student in botany in the State University, brought into the laboratory a shoot of what appeared to be this species with a green stem and whorls of green branches, but tipped by a small, but perfectly formed strobilus. It had been collected in a slough on the west …

Direct Photoelectric Spectrochemical Determination Of Exchangeble Bases Of Soil, Robert H. Heidel Jan 1946

Direct Photoelectric Spectrochemical Determination Of Exchangeble Bases Of Soil, Robert H. Heidel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is well recognized in the field of soil science that a knowledge of the amounts and relative proportions of the exchangeable cations in the soil is indispensable in studies dealing with the chemical and physical behavior of soil or with soil fertility. While the need for more rapid methods permitting analysis of large numbers of soil samples has resulted in the development of rapid microchemical methods (11, 12) and spectrochemical procedures (5, 6, 10), the analytical procedures are time-consuming and hampered by the wide range of concentrations among the constituents. The desirability of greater rapidity and simplicity of analysis …

A Progress Report On The Preservation Of The Prairie, Ada Hayden Jan 1946

A Progress Report On The Preservation Of The Prairie, Ada Hayden

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In accord with the specifications of the Prairie Project sponsored by the Iowa Academy of Science, the following recommendations for preservation of prairie have been co-operatively formulated; a number of the most desirable remaining tracts of prairie representative of virgin soils, flora, and fauna have been described and photographed. Not all of the tracts reported in the survey of the state by counties have been yet inspected.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRESERVATION OF PRAIRIE: The preceding brief report on Prairie Areas in Iowa, (Hayden, 1941) which should be preserved has shown: 1. That preservation of representative, selected prairie areas is a practical …
