An Experimental Study Of Repression, D. J. Doland, Charles F. Haner
An Experimental Study Of Repression, D. J. Doland, Charles F. Haner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The concept of repression is commonly referred to in terms of pleasant and unpleasant material. We say that an individual will tend to remember pleasant experiences and will tend to forget or "repress" unpleasant experiences. Many of the investigators doing research in this field have failed to look into the meaning of the word "unpleasant" as it is used by Freud, and have mistakenly used affective tone as a criterion. The present study has been conducted on the basis of this interpretation of the term "repression," with the emphasis on first determining the frame of reference of the subject, rather …
A Fish Population Study Of An Artificial Lake, E. B. Speaker
A Fish Population Study Of An Artificial Lake, E. B. Speaker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Within the past fifteen years, eighteen artificial or man-made lakes have been constructed in Iowa to augment the fishing potentialities and general recreational facilities of the state. These little lakes range in size from twenty-five to some three-hundred surface acres. Most of them originally provided the citizenry with considerable fishing, but in recent years the anglers take in a few of them has fallen off sharply. Beeds Lake, a 130-acre impoundment in Franklin County, is a typical example. Constructed with federal assistance in the years 1934-1936, it was thought to be one of the outstanding lakes of its kind in …

A Comparison Of The Forest Floras Along The Des Moines And Missouri Rivers, John M. Aikman, Charles L. Gilly
A Comparison Of The Forest Floras Along The Des Moines And Missouri Rivers, John M. Aikman, Charles L. Gilly
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A cursory examination of the deciduous forest of eastern North America, at intervals from its center (14) in the Ohio River basin westward, discloses changes in the structure of the forest characterized chiefly by a reduction in number of species and in the abundance and size of the component trees. Beyond the Mississippi river in Iowa and eastern Nebraska the forest flora is concentrated chiefly along streams flowing diagonally southeastward. Bordering these streams the deciduous forest extends into the prairie.
The One-Way-Mirror Technique As A Scientific Approach To The Study Of Magazine Readership, Herman F. Brandt
The One-Way-Mirror Technique As A Scientific Approach To The Study Of Magazine Readership, Herman F. Brandt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Coextensive with the problem of production in modern civilization is that of consumption. To ascertain what, where, when, and why certain commodities are purchased or utilized presupposes that a certain amount and kind of research has preceded. This applies to all commodities produced, manufactured and sold. Market research today is essential to the manufacturer of the product and it is employed in America's foremost and progressive industries. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent annually for the purpose of ascertaining what the consumer wants and what his buying interests and habits are.
How People Select And Purchase Greeting Cards, Evaluated By Means Of The One-Way-Mirror Technique, Herman F. Brandt
How People Select And Purchase Greeting Cards, Evaluated By Means Of The One-Way-Mirror Technique, Herman F. Brandt
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to discover by means of the one-way mirror technique how people select and purchase greeting cards. To discover the buying habits of customers was the major objective throughout the respective studies. It was an attempt to answer questions such as: 1. How much time does the average customer spend in selecting and purchasing the card or cards of his choice. 2. How much time does he devote to picking up cards and reading the sentiments? 3. How many cards does the average buyer pick up? 4. How many cards are purchased by the average …
Entomological Notes Taken While In The Orient, D. D. Millspaugh
Entomological Notes Taken While In The Orient, D. D. Millspaugh
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
These observations were made while with the United States of America Typhus Commission during the period from November 1944 to November 1945 in the Orient. The unit base was situated near Myitkyina, Burma, which is located on the banks of the upper Irrawaddy River in north central Burma. Consequently most specimens are from that vicinity. The paper is given to acquaint others with the situations at hand and inform you of various existing conditions there.
The Nutrient Substrate In Relation To Temperature And Photoperiodic Responses Of Spinach, Wayne J. Mcilrath
The Nutrient Substrate In Relation To Temperature And Photoperiodic Responses Of Spinach, Wayne J. Mcilrath
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Plant physiologists throughout the years have used various substrates in an attempt to secure one which would give plant responses comparable to those of soil. Plants grown in water culture method, as practiced by the physiologist of the nineteenth century, showed little correlation with those grown in solid substrates or soil. Plants grown in chemically inert sand give results closer to those in soil but serious limitations are still encountered. In recent years gravel and other coarse mineral materials have been employed and the plant growth responses obtained correlate quite closely with those found when soil is used. Certain disadvantages …
Further Observations On Claviceps Purpurea, Lois H. Tiffany
Further Observations On Claviceps Purpurea, Lois H. Tiffany
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Utilizing techniques which make possible the production of perithecia and ascospores of Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul. in the laboratory ( 9), more detailed observations upon various phases of sclerotial and ascospore germination of this fungus have been made. The ergot bodies (sclerotia) used in these studies were collected from forty-one species of Iowa grasses. (Table I). Collections of C. pusilla Ces. were also made on three Andropogon species.
A Symbiotic Blepharisma, Leland P. Johnson
A Symbiotic Blepharisma, Leland P. Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the summer of 1946, while studying material taken from Marble Lake in Dickinson County in Northwest Iowa a Blepharisma, apparently containing zoochlorellae, was observed. Kahl (1932) lists no symbiotic Blepharisma, but describes Blepharisma coeruleum which apparently eats only the alga Tetraspora. Kahl also cites Blepharisma tardum and Blepharisma dileptus as having a diet composed primarily of red bacteria. It was thought an interesting problem would be to determine the relationship between the Blepharisma and green alga thought to be zoochlorella.
Studies On Excystment Of Clinostomum Metacercariae By Use Of Artificial Digestion, Marilyn Hemenway
Studies On Excystment Of Clinostomum Metacercariae By Use Of Artificial Digestion, Marilyn Hemenway
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
For many years parasitologists have studied a group of animals called flukes. Although much is known about them now, difficulty has been encountered in obtaining the metacercarial form for study. At present there is no universally satisfactory method available to free metacercariae from the cyst walls that enclose them. The development of such a method would remove a stumbling block from the path of further study of the fluke life histories.
Chronic Hypertension In Dogs Following Occlusion Of The Carotid Arteries, Ronald E. Scantlebury
Chronic Hypertension In Dogs Following Occlusion Of The Carotid Arteries, Ronald E. Scantlebury
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Acute experiments involving ligation of both carotid arteries revealed that blood pressure, recorded from the femoral vein of dogs, remained elevated for the duration of each experiment, or from six to fourteen hours. To determine if similar results could be obtained in chronic experiments the common carotid arteries of three dogs were ligated. The apparatus used for recording blood pressure consisted of a Baumanometer attached to a pediatrics cuff which was secured around the hind leg by means of a leather wristlet. Both oscillatory and auscultatory methods were used. As the latter method was found to give more consistent systolic …

The Cuprous-Cupric Complex In Hydrochloric Acid Solution, Harvey Diehl, P. A. Carlson, D. Christian, E. H. Dewel, M. R. Emerson, F. K. Heumann, H. W. Standage
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the process described by Diehl and Brouns (1) for the direct determination of copper in bronze by electrodeposition from hydrochloric acid solution using hydroxylammonium chloride as anodic depolarizer and controlling the cathode potential automatically (3), the sample of bronze is dissolved in hydrochloric acid by the dropwise addition of nitric acid or of hydrogen peroxide. Subsequently the solution is diluted and electrolyzed, the cathode reaction being· first the reduction of cupric ion to the chlorocuprous ion, CuCl3==, and then the deposition of copper. The time of electrolysis can be materially shortened if the first reduction is effected …
Some Notes On The Pleistocene Geology Of Shelby County, Iowa, R. V. Ruhe
Some Notes On The Pleistocene Geology Of Shelby County, Iowa, R. V. Ruhe
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Previous investigations in Pleistocene geology in Iowa have resulted in the development of the concepts of gumbotil and the flat gumbotil plains of the Nebraskan and Kansan drift sheets. During recent field work in southwestern Iowa the writer noted differences in textures of the materials of the weathered zones of these tills. Measurable differences in altitudes of the tops of these materials were also noted. Field evidence indicates that (1) the term gumbotil cannot be used to describe all types of weathered till, and (2) variations in relief exist on the surface of the weathered zones of the Nebraskan and …
The Role Of An Irrelevant Drive Stimulus In The Acquisition Of Habit Strength, Max Ulric Eninger
The Role Of An Irrelevant Drive Stimulus In The Acquisition Of Habit Strength, Max Ulric Eninger
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
One of the concepts most central to Clark L. Hull's systematic theory of behavior is the concept of habit strength, a logical construct which represents the strength of learning in an organism. Habit strength has the status of an intervening variable, and by that, it is meant that it is an hypothetical state of an organism, which is functionally related to antecedent, observable and manipulable events, on the one side, and to certain response manifestations, such as latency, frequency, and resistance to extinction, on the other. It is the task of the experimentalist in the field of learning theory to …
Notes On Iowa Fungi. Xi., G. W. Martin
Notes On Iowa Fungi. Xi., G. W. Martin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The range of this species, as given by Seaver (N. A. Flora 3: 42. 1910), is "New York to Virginia." A small but adequate collection, growing on soil in woods near Iowa City, is referred to it with some hesitation. The perithecia are more protrudant than the description seems to imply, but the globose base is immersed in the subiculum. Otherwise it is in agreement and it is certainly distinct from any of our other species. Unlike other species of the genus, H. apiculatus is not associated with the remains of other fungi, a circumstance which led to its original …
Simultaneous Reduction Of Quadratic Forms, B. Vinograde
Simultaneous Reduction Of Quadratic Forms, B. Vinograde
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Let x denote the real n-tuple (x1,…,xn), (xx… ) the iterated n-tuple (x1,…,xn,x1,…xn…), A = (a i j) and A' a square matrix and its transpose. We wish to consider the effect of nonsingular transformations on a sum x(A1, + ... + Ak)x' of k quadratic forms when the real symmetric matrices Ai and A = A, + ... + Ak are subjected to certain restrictions on their ranks. The results attained link a theorem in statistics with a theorem in ring …
A Short-Form Test Of Cynicism, Martin F. Fritz
A Short-Form Test Of Cynicism, Martin F. Fritz
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Papers concerned with an extensive study of cynicism and idealism have been given before the Iowa Academy of Science at several previous meetings. Since descriptions of the project along with statistical analyses have already been given, these will not receive detailed consideration here. Tests measuring cynicism and idealism would constitute a contribution to the study of certain phases of personality which have received very little consideration up to the present time. The original investigation made use of a test involving 200 items and this report describes a reduction to a short form by means of certain rational statistical procedures. The …
Use By Fish Of The Modified Denil Fishway In The Des Moines River, Harry M. Harrison
Use By Fish Of The Modified Denil Fishway In The Des Moines River, Harry M. Harrison
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In December of 1937, the Iowa Conservation Commission entered into a cooperative agreement with the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research of the State University of Iowa for the investigation of fishways. This agreement had for its purpose the development of a fishway, which could be practically installed at reasonable costs, and yet, provide efficient passage for fish over river barriers such as the hydro-electric dams that impound water in many Iowa streams. In the course of the investigation, but under a set of special conditions, a modification of the Denil type fishway was determined far superior to the many other …

The Family Boraginaceae In Iowa - A Preliminary Report, Charles L. Gilly, Evelyn K. O'Brian
The Family Boraginaceae In Iowa - A Preliminary Report, Charles L. Gilly, Evelyn K. O'Brian
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Except for the annotated list published by Cratty in "The Iowa Flora" (1933), there has been no publication dealing with the entire family Boraginaceae in Iowa. · On the basis of only the Iowa State College herbarium, Cratty listed thirteen species of the family known to occur in the state; three of these were indicated as introductions from Europe or Asia. Prior to the appearance of Cratty's list, certain species of the family had been included in local and county lists,1 and in Cratty's paper on the immigrant flora of Iowa ( 1929), while Conard and Clarke ( 1929) …
New Qualitative Tests For Sulfide And Carbonate, Jacob Cornog
New Qualitative Tests For Sulfide And Carbonate, Jacob Cornog
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
At the present time, the test for sulfide is often made by placing a portion of the sample in an acid solution and identifying the gas evolved either by its odor or by holding a piece of moistened lead acetate paper in the evolved gas. The test for carbonate is often made in a similar war, except for the fact that a drop of barium hydroxide solution is used to identify the gas that is evolved. Both of these tests become increasingly uncertain as the size of the sample being tested is made smaller and smaller, which is the case …
The Determination Of Palladium And Nickel With Alpha-Furildioxime, Sherman A. Reed, Charles V. Banks
The Determination Of Palladium And Nickel With Alpha-Furildioxime, Sherman A. Reed, Charles V. Banks
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although alpha-furildioxime has been known for over forty years, a recent survey of the literature disclosed its use as an analytical reagent has been very limited. Its preparation and use as a reagent for nickel was described by Soule (1), however, no data was found concerning its application to the detection or determination of palladium. Since it is well known that the 1,2-dioximes in general react with palladium as well as nickel to form characteristic, insoluble and highly colored complexes, it was evident that further investigation of the compound should be made. The interest in this laboratory has been concerned …
Quantification Of The Wechsler-Bellevue Vocabulary, Charles F. Haner, Wilse B. Webb
Quantification Of The Wechsler-Bellevue Vocabulary, Charles F. Haner, Wilse B. Webb
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The importance of the vocabulary test in mental testing is unquestioned. Such tests have been evaluated and used as the best single index of general intelligence when only one measure can be used. The inclusion of the vocabulary test in a general intelligence test is almost a foregone conclusion. In addition the vocabulary test has been extensively used in studying mental deterioration. Consideri.ng the importance of the vocabulary test it is surprising that so little attention has been given to scoring problems involved. Yacorzynski (1941) has suggested that the vocabulary score used in the deterioration ratio may obscure real deterioration …

Science Talent Search In Iowa, F. E. Brown
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The American Association for the Advancement of Science is emphasizing the recruiting and training of young people who are likely to contribute to the development of science in the future. The Iowa Academy of Science has been asked to cooperate in this activity. The enterprise is not a new one. The ablest of the youth have been sought and trained for the important work of their day, longer than history has recorded the doings of the human race. This present emphasis on the finding of those with a talent for science is the recognition of a real need for scientists …
The Academy Conservation Program, J. M. Aikman
The Academy Conservation Program, J. M. Aikman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Iowa Academy of Science at the present time does not have a coordinated conservation program. An examination of the records discloses the fact that it never has had one. The program of the conservation committee as embodied in the recommendations to the Academy in 1945 and 1946 although approved in the annual business meeting each year, has not been incorporated into an operative program by the Academy. A brief resume of the conservation activities of the Academy may prove to be of some value in the discussion of a conservation program for the Academy. According to Swisher's review of …
The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant
The Place Of Biology In General Education, Martin L. Grant
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
General Education is the term used to express the idea that there is a common body of knowledge, of attitudes, and of behavior-patterns that should be considered of such universal significance as to necessitate its formal incorporation into the curriculum of all collegiate institutions. The idea is as old as formal education itself, and back in the day when there was only one curriculum in some educational institutions all education was general education. However, as specialized and professional curricula developed, fewer and fewer areas of subject matter remained to be explored by all students of a particular college, such that …
