Androhermaphrodites Of Lychnis Alba, H. L. Dean, Sharon K. Smith Jan 1964

Androhermaphrodites Of Lychnis Alba, H. L. Dean, Sharon K. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lychnis alba was found to produce four categories of flowers; i.e. pistillate, staminate, gynohermaphrodite and androhermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites are formed when a rudimentary pistil (pistillodium) or stamens (staminodea) develop into mature organs on the ovaries of otherwise pistillate or staminate flowers. Androhermaphrodites, in particular, were studied and their structure and behavior found to be essentially similar to corresponding parts of regular staminate and pistillate flowers. Ovaries of androhermaphrodite flowers exhibited variations in style number ranging from one to five. Ovaries with two to five styles were self- or cross-fertile with any good Lychnis alba pollen. One-styled ovaries of androhermaphrodite flowers were …

The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Copper With Bis-3,3'-(5,6-Dimethyl-1,2,4-Triazine), Richard E. Jensen, Ronald T. Pflaum Jan 1964

The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Copper With Bis-3,3'-(5,6-Dimethyl-1,2,4-Triazine), Richard E. Jensen, Ronald T. Pflaum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A new reagent, bis-3,3'-(5,6-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazine), BDMT, is proposed for the colorimetric determination of copper. The reagent is water soluble and is easily prepared in the laboratory. An intensively colored orange complex, Cu(BDMT)2+1, is formed upon reaction of copper(I) ion and the reagent in aqueous solution at pH 5.0. The complex exhibits a wavelength of maximum absorption at 444 mμ with a molar absorptivity of 9,700. The perchlorate salt of the complex is readily extracted into nitrobenzene from aqueous solution. A proposed spectrophotometric method for the determination of copper is both accurate and precise.

Schiff's Bases Of Pyridylhydrazine As Analytical Reagents For Cobalt, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl Jan 1964

Schiff's Bases Of Pyridylhydrazine As Analytical Reagents For Cobalt, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Schiff s bases having functioned groups adjacent to the carbon-nitrogen bond so that chelation (ring formation) can occur with metal atoms are of interest because of the intense colors of the metal derivatives. Thus, the compound l,3-bis(2'-pyridyl)-2,3- diaza-l-propene (I) abbreviated PDP reported by Lions and Martin (1) and Geldard and Lions (2) forms a compound with cobalt so intensely colored as to offer promise of use in the analytical chemistry of cobalt. We have now investigated the cobalt, iron and nickel derivatives of PDP in detail and have investigated also certain similar Schiff's bases such as 1-(2' - hydrozyphenyl)-3-pyridyl-2,3-diaza-l-propene (II) …

Comparison Of Various Commercial Hydrated Lime For Reducing Soil Plasticity, J. W. H. Wang, R. L. Handy Jan 1964

Comparison Of Various Commercial Hydrated Lime For Reducing Soil Plasticity, J. W. H. Wang, R. L. Handy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Atterberg limits tests were performed on mixtures of gumbotil soil and the various chief chemical compounds found in hydrated limes. The results were then checked with commercial hydrated limes of varying chemical compositions. Results indicate that among the major constituents of hydrated limes Ca(OH)2 is most effective in reducing soil plasticity. MgO shows a moderate effect, but Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3 show practically no effect. There is, however, practically no difference between different types or between the same type of commercial hydrated limes for the reduction of soil plasticity. The choice of lime for soil-lime stabilization should, therefore, …

Paper Chromatograms Of Body Mucus Of Some Suckers (Family Catostomidae), Gene R. Huntsman Jan 1964

Paper Chromatograms Of Body Mucus Of Some Suckers (Family Catostomidae), Gene R. Huntsman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Phenol:water and butanol:acetic acid:water solvent systems were used with horizontal and descending paper chromatography of the body mucuses of Carpiodes, Catostomus, Ictiobus, Moxostoma, and Hypentelium. Mucus could be sampled in the field, applied to the chromatography paper, allowed to dry, and kept for several days without refrigeration. Chromatograms of fresh and dried mucus appeared the same. Horizontal runs were faster but were abandoned for the greater separation possible with descending techniques. Ninhydrin-stained descending chromatograms showed differences between some genera within a run. Descending chromatograms run in butanol:acetic acid:water and viewed with short wave ultraviolet light showed differences between most genera …

Grainy Gray Ped Coatings In Brunizem Soils, R. W. Arnold, F. F. Riecken Jan 1964

Grainy Gray Ped Coatings In Brunizem Soils, R. W. Arnold, F. F. Riecken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The presence of light colored, granular material on structural units in the lower B horizon is considered to be an atypical morphological feature in the Brunizem soils of Iowa. This study indicates that there are appreciable areas of Brunizem soils, derived from Wisconsin loess and Iowan till, in eastern Iowa with such coatings in the lower B horizon. Because the grainy gray ped coatings cannot readily be accounted for by any soil-forming factor other than vegetation, and because they are similar to coatings in some associated Gray-Brown Podzolic soils, it is inferred that their presence is generally related to a …

Soil Stabilization With Polystyrene, Gilbert L. Roderick, Turgut Demirel Jan 1964

Soil Stabilization With Polystyrene, Gilbert L. Roderick, Turgut Demirel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper presents results of an investigation of the effect of polystyrene on the engineering properties of three soils. Use of a polystyrene-benzene solution as an admixture resulted in increased strength values. Satisfactory resistance to expansion and frost action was obtained with sandy and silty soils; unsatisfactory results were obtained with a clayey soil. Polystyrene stabilization is most effective with sandy soils; effectiveness decreases with increasing clay content. At present the method does not compare favorably with the economics of other available methods of stabilization.

Study Of The Frequency Of Color Blindness Among Mentally Retarded Children In The Counties Of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Ida And Sac., Terry L. Penniman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study has shown that there is an appreciably greater frequency of defective color vision among the mentally retarded children in the counties specified than that found in normal children. The general objective of this study was to determine the frequency of color blindness among mentally retarded children in an area of northwest Iowa. The subjects were children in fifteen special education classes for the mentally retarded. The Hardy-Rand-Ritter Pseudoisochromatic plates for detecting, classifying, and estimating the degree of defective color vision were used in this study. The author in all cases did the examining.

Reaction Of Cinnamoyl Chloride With A Dialkylcadmium Reagent, Kenneth W. Kraus, Richard T. Bogan, Richard M. Weier Jan 1964

Reaction Of Cinnamoyl Chloride With A Dialkylcadmium Reagent, Kenneth W. Kraus, Richard T. Bogan, Richard M. Weier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was demonstrated that a dialkylcadmium reagent would successfully react with the unsaturated acid chloride, cinnamoyl chloride, under both ordinary conditions and at 0 ° in the presence of ferric chloride to give the alkyl styryl ketone in yields of 54% and 46% respectively. The nbutyl styryl ketone obtained in the reaction displayed infrared absorbtion at 5.92 μ (C=O) and at 6.04 μ (C=C). The dipole moment was found to be 3.16 D in benzene solution at 25°.
