The purpose for conducting this study was to determine if the integration of selected economic concepts into a high school bookkeeping course had any effect upon the economic understanding of selected high school bookkeeping students, and if the time devoted to economic topics had any effect on the selected students bookkeeping ability.
A Study Of Gesture In Elocution And Oral Interpretation During The Years 1870 To 1930 In The United States, Faith Alene Engelkes
A Study Of Gesture In Elocution And Oral Interpretation During The Years 1870 To 1930 In The United States, Faith Alene Engelkes
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this thesis was to make an historical study examining a selected list of textbooks dealing with the subject of gesture in elocution, expression, or oral interpretation between the years 1870 and 1930 in the United States. A preliminary chapter reviewed the backgrounds of elocution in the United States before 1870. The succeeding chapters reviewed the textbooks chosen for study for each twenty-year period to gain an insight into each author's philosophy of teaching gesture in delivery. Each textbook contained definitions of the various terms involved, which definitions also served to disclose the author's attitude toward the teaching …
Individual Instruction Methods Utilized By Secondary Distributive Education Teacher-Coordinators In Iowa, James A. Fowler
Individual Instruction Methods Utilized By Secondary Distributive Education Teacher-Coordinators In Iowa, James A. Fowler
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Individual instruction is a major feature that makes cooperative education programs truly individualized and student-centered. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine which individual instruction methods used by Iowa's secondary school distributive education coordinators best met the expected goals of their respective cooperative programs; and (2) to determine which individualized instructional methods were used most frequently by these coordinators.
The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie
The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
After the frontier had reached the Midwest, settlement proceeded at a rapid pace. When the Black Hawk Purchase opened Iowa to settlers in 1832, farmers and merchants soon replaced the trappers, miners, and fur traders of an earlier era. By the outbreak of the Civil War the state was one-third settled. By 1890 all of the counties in the state had been settled and developed. Such rapid occupation of these lands encouraged dreams of great cities and the creation of country villages in numbers which were excessive for the survival of many. Numerous communities developed only to become ghost towns …
A Personal Solution To The Problem Of Color In Painting: Minimal Or Absent, Charles A. Frelund
A Personal Solution To The Problem Of Color In Painting: Minimal Or Absent, Charles A. Frelund
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this thesis is to describe verbally a series of personal involvements in painting. These involvements have taken place over a period of nine years and are concerned with seeking solutions to problems which have become apparent by direct and personal experiences. Two major questions which evolved over this period of years form the body of the thesis. The first question was, am I working with a medium which can best reflect my personal aims? The second, could I solve the problems of color within the medium of painting to my own satisfaction? While searching for the answers …
Eight Cone Six Glazes For The Electric Kiln, John D. Coiner
Eight Cone Six Glazes For The Electric Kiln, John D. Coiner
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis is concerned with the development of eight, cone 6 (2232° F) ceramic glazes to be used in an electric kiln. These glazes were developed from a scientific approach in which the basic formula was calculated on paper. From these base formulas a trial and error approach was taken in which the basic chemicals were then adjusted until the desired esthetic quality and necessary firing dependability were achieved. The eight glazes presented in the thesis provide a wide range of characteristics which make them versatile for use by the craftsman, and also provide base glazes for further investigation by …
Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen
Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …
Ethanol Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae) Inhibiting The Growth Of Staphylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Robert C. Goss
Ethanol Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae) Inhibiting The Growth Of Staphylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus, Rollin H. Heinzerling, Robert C. Goss
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Dried ethanol precipitates prepared from nematodes incubated for 7, 8, 15, 21 and 22 days produced significant inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. The 7 and 15 day precipitates showed a linear increase in inhibition. Microscopic observation indicated that plates incubated for 8, 15, and 20 days had the greatest fraction of molting nematodes. Molting was correlated with inhibition.

Inhabition Of Stapylococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus With Ethanol-Extracted Precipitates Of Cephalobus Sp. (Nematoda: Cephalobidae), Rollin H. Heinzerling
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this investigation was to make a preliminary biochemical study of the inhibition by an extract of the nematode Cephalobus and to test the inhibitive effect of the extract on the growth of Staphylococcus pyogenes var. aureus . Emphasis was placed upon the con - centration of inhibition-producing precipitates and correlating them with growth of S. aureus. Also investigated was the molting phenomenon of nematodes and its relation to inhibition-producing precipitates . Precipitates from ethanol extraction of the nematode of various days growth were tested for inhibition of S. aureus. Nematode-ethanol- precipitates which were eight , fifteen, twenty-one, …
