The Objectives Of The Earth Science Curriculum Project: An Evaluation Of Their Achievement, Musa Y. Qutub, Keith M. Hussey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The textbook Investigating the Earth and its companion two-volume Teacher's Guide were conceived, written, and tested by a group of scientists and educators brought together for that specific purpose. A primary objective was to produce an earth science course that could replace the increasingly unsatisfactory and outdated general science program. The three main themes outlined for the program were behavioral, conceptual, and historical. Its major objective was to offer the ninth-grade students an interdisciplinary earth science course that would provide a view of our dynamic planet through the use of scientific concepts, such as space, time, energy, motion, and matter, …

Effectiveness Of Library Learning Centers At The Elementary School Level, Jane W. Baker

Graduate Research Papers

The problem to be studied focuses on the need for media centers and media programs in the elementary schools. The Standards for School Media Programs published jointly by the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction of NEA and the American Association of School Librarians in June 1969 defines the media center as "a learning center in the school where a full range of print and audiovisual media, necessary equipment, and services from media specialists are accessible to students and teachers." The focus of the media program is on facilitating and improving the learning process in its new direction--with emphasis on the learner, …

Count Rumford: Designer Of Clothes, Peter H. Sweedy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When developing a concept in class, I think all teachers realize the importance of taking into account the attention span of their students. One report I read felt that most college students can maintain a good 30-minute attention span, whereas seventh grade students can only average a period of four to five minutes of concentration on a speaker.

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch Jan 1971

An Analysis Of The Life And Works Of Charles Lamb, Donna Goettsch

Graduate Research Papers

Charles Lamb was an essayist held in the highest esteem in the English literary world. He was a man small in stature and fragile in appearance, but strong in character and quick of wit. Colleagues often described him as a shy, gentle man. lamb himself did not like to be depicted as a gentle person, because to him it held Shakespeare's connotation of the word poor spirited. This Lamb definitely was not. When he was among friends, his humor was witty, and puns rolled from his lips the instant they formulated in his mind. He loved life and had no …

The Computer And Automation In The Library, Sally Jean Kremer Jan 1971

The Computer And Automation In The Library, Sally Jean Kremer

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of the computer has had a great impact upon society and individuals. An ever increasing number of uses has been found for the computer. One of the possible uses ls particularly noteable--its use as an aid to teaching. The computer is a tool which can be used to enhance the educational system. The nature of the computer can be summed up in only a few words: "It does so well the work it is asked to do, because it is told how to do that work by means of a 'stored program' of instructions." The great benefit of …

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson Jan 1971

White Teachers And Black Students: A Problem For The Speech Discipline, Edward L. Mcglone, Loren J. Anderson

Iowa Journal of Communication

In our highly verbal society, the ability to communicate orally is fundamental to economic, social, and academic achievement. Only recently has American education, aided by government and foundation support, sought to identify and cope with the communication problems of economically disadvantaged black students. The findings of four recent commissions--the Haryou studies in New York, the McCone panel in Los Angeles, the national Coleman commission, and the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders--all have contained the observation that intensive concentration on verbal skills is needed in black urban schools; because as the latter Commission's report put it, the lack of such …

Randolph Of Roanoke: His Personality, Politics, And Public Speaking, William E. Lampton Jan 1971

Randolph Of Roanoke: His Personality, Politics, And Public Speaking, William E. Lampton

Iowa Journal of Communication

Few Southern orators have matched the dynamic rhetoric of conservative John Randolph, one of Virginia's numerous planter-statesmen who gained national prominence. Focusing on Randolph's personal traits, political philosophy, and rhetorical habits, this article presents a picture of a neglected paragon of eloquence.

Colorful John Randolph of Roanoke, Virginia, was one of the most fascinating Southern orators in the era when our nation struggled through its infancy. Because his personality, his political theory and behavior, and his public speaking contributed significantly to American public address, this article looks at Randolph from each of these standpoints.

Independent Speech Study At West Waterloo, Raymond Jorgensen Jan 1971

Independent Speech Study At West Waterloo, Raymond Jorgensen

Iowa Journal of Communication

The faculty at West Waterloo High School is presently on a two-year curriculum study. and in the past four or five months I've had the opportunity to visit a number of speech directors and talk to them about their speech course offerings. In talking to them about their Independent Study courses, it was found that the schools which offered them all had one thing in common--modular scheduling. With this type of scheduling it is relatively easy to offer more speech courses to the students because more time is available to them for classes. With the use of resource centers, students …
