Some Early And Current Studies Of Rural Churches., William H. Drier

Faculty Publications

The paper reviews about 25 major studies printed since 1920; and in turn; these refer to some 75 other studies about rural churches; their location; numbers; ministers; denominational arrangements; and supporting population per church on a county level. On the role of rural social science in Theological education; one study reports that the pastor is not only a man of God but a man of knowledge; not only in theological but in all fields of study. An Abstract Of A Creative Film Project (Words Tell A Story), Adele Harms Jan 1975

An Abstract Of A Creative Film Project (Words Tell A Story), Adele Harms

Graduate Research Papers

When an author creates his medium is words, when a composer creates his medium is music, when a sculptor works he employs clay or stone. Film, used as a creative medium is one of the least limiting tools available to express originality of ideas. It can actually encompass all other forms of creativity by projecting them on a screen. By adding sound to the film words can be used in an effective form. For these reasons, film can be an exciting creative format.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of film is that it shows motion. It does not have to "suggest" …

Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer Jan 1975

Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer

Graduate Research Papers

For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys in children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. There were two time periods from which the books were selected. One grouping was from 1959-1963 and the other from 1970-1974. Other books …

Cognitive Profiles Of Blind Children: A Survey Of Intra-Child Differences, Linda L. Royster Jan 1975

Cognitive Profiles Of Blind Children: A Survey Of Intra-Child Differences, Linda L. Royster

Graduate Research Papers

"Since 1900, when the first public school class was organized in Chicago, special classes for blind children have been established in most larger and intermediate-sized communities as well. At the onset, all of the instruction for the blind was conducted in special classes. Gradually, however, blind children in these classes were reassigned for part of the day to regular classes." Today, this trend has turned into a movement to fully integrate blind children into the regular classroom. Within regular classrooms, teachers recognize the existence of individual differences; therefore, instructional methods and assignments are tailored to meet the divergent needs in …

Debater-Critic Communication, Robert Kemp Jan 1975

Debater-Critic Communication, Robert Kemp

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper will examine the response of intercollegiate debaters to a survey mailed fifteen days after the District IV tournament had concluded. Thirty-six debaters participated in the tournament. An initial and a follow-up mailing resulted in responses from 24 of the participants. Each student was asked to answer individually, rather than to give team answers to each of the 18 questions. Since some of the questions had a fairly similar intent, only those that seemed unique and that related to the student interest in examining the interaction process between themselves and the three critics were examined.

Iowa Academy Of Science Celebrates Centennial Anniversary Of Founding, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

April 17-19, 1975, marks the observance of an important historical event in Iowa, for it was in 1875 that Charles E. Bessey and a handful of scientists and medical men conceived the original Iowa Academy of Science. One hundred years have produced fantastic changes in life in Iowa, and the Academy of today has almost forgotten its heritage. It has grown from a small fellowship of men dedicated to furthering scientific work in Iowa to 1,400 members-a sizable cross section of the entire scientific community representing pure and applied research, conservation activity, engineering, economics and all levels of education and …

Student Philosophy In Science Class, Owen Primavera

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As a science teacher I know that facts are vital parts of teaching chemistry or biology, and that the better students understand chemical and biological systems the better they will understand how organisms function. But more than facts seems to be needed to teach ecology.

Trends In Secondary Science Enrollments In Iowa, Gary Downs Jan 1975

Trends In Secondary Science Enrollments In Iowa, Gary Downs

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Enrollment data were collected from the district administration for the five reported years starting with the 1968-69 school year. The data for the 1973-74 school year were collected at the school level. Collection at the school level should provide a more representative data bank for the academic programs. All the science offerings were grouped into the following seven categories: biology, chemistry, earth science, enrichment science, general science, physical science, and physics. It is interesting to note that in the 1968-69 data collection only 19 different courses were reported. In the succeeding years, 25, 56, 71, 74, and 96 were reported …

A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson Jan 1975

A Contextual Approach To Investigating Verbal And Nonverbal Behaviors, Douglas M. Brooks, Barry Wilson

Faculty Publications

This investigation utilized a recent concept developed by researchers and theoreticians studying nonverbal behavior--the contextual framework. Instruments of demonstrated reliability were employed to record simultaneous verbal and nonverbal data within the selected contextual framework of student-initiated questions. Data was collected at the University of Northern Iowa; Malcolm Price Laboratory School. The study sample included 15 teachers from grades one through twelve and 60 pupils. Pupils were placed in categories by their teachers: (1) accepting; (2) concerned; (3) indifferent; and (4) rejecting. Objectives of the investigation included: (1) to investigate physical proximity as a quantifiable dimension of nonverbal behavior; (2) to …

A Computer Assisted Environmental Education Resource Program, Sara K. Smerud, Gary Thomas, Tim Keenan, Dale Nimrod Jan 1975

A Computer Assisted Environmental Education Resource Program, Sara K. Smerud, Gary Thomas, Tim Keenan, Dale Nimrod

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Northeast Iowa is an exceptionally beautiful and unique region. Environmental education in the schools and communities of this area is a vital factor in enabling citizens to take a reasoned approach to the conservation and management of this region. Two observations precipitated the action which resulted in the project described in this paper. The first was that the local resources were vulnerable to being utilized in a potentially harmful manner and secondly, teachers did not seem to be taking full advantage of their local resources in their classroom instruction.

Algae And Energy, James J. Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The extent to which algae contribute to human welfare is often forgotten, ignored or unappreciated. Many types of algae serve as bases in commercially prepared foods and condiments. Algal products are used in cosmetics, textiles, pharmaceuticals and paints. In Asia, algae are often mixed and served with rice and fish to supplement the human diet. In coastal areas of the world, kelps are often chopped as food for livestock. The alga Poryphyra is cultivated in Japan to supply a 65 million pound annual market.

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch Jan 1975

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the early years, all papers presented at the annual meetings of the Iowa Academy of Science were delivered at general session. Evidently a number of members felt that they would be better able to discuss and appreciate the papers if they were given at sectional meetings. This had the further advantage of permitting the inclusion of more papers in the program. Professor L. S. Ross, then secretary of the Academy, suggested in 1914 that papers be given at sectional meetings. In 1916 this was done for the first time.

As one of the original sections, the Zoology Section has …

Science Teaching And The Iowa Academy Of Science, Robert E. Yager, Delma E. Harding

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Science Teaching Section of the Academy can boast of the largest membership of any section at this point in time - the hundredth year for the Iowa Academy of Science. In terms of the normal lifetime of man, a hundred years is a major span of time. Centennials should afford an opportunity for reviewing accomplishments and history, as well as an opportunity for celebration, reflection, and focus upon the future. This is such an attempt with respect to science teaching and the Iowa Academy of Science.

Iowa Physics Through The Years, Lester T. Earls Jan 1975

Iowa Physics Through The Years, Lester T. Earls

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The ensuing paragraphs will attempt to review the development of physics in Iowa from its early beginnings to the present. Since much of physics activity is and has been supported by institutions of higher education, the developments at the several colleges and universities will be pertinent to the story. But since physics is essentially a human activity, the persons who made major contributions to the development of Iowa physics must become a significant part of this review.

History Of Studies On The Iowa Vascular Flora, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1975

History Of Studies On The Iowa Vascular Flora, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although a manual of the vascular plants of Iowa has yet to be written, many botanists have contributed to a thorough floristic survey of the state, and most of the difficult plant families have been studied taxonomically. The number of vascular plant species is estimated at over 1,800. It would probably require five or more years of concentrated effort to produce an accurate, comprehensive manual of the Iowa flora. A listing of 238 selected references on the Iowa vascular flora is presented.

The History Of The Atmospheric Sciences In Iowa, Paul J. Waite Jan 1975

The History Of The Atmospheric Sciences In Iowa, Paul J. Waite

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of the atmospheric sciences in Iowa began in a very simple manner, with the entry of the earliest meteorological and climatological observations into logs, journals and private correspondence and the recording of weather proverbs and lore. These simple environmental records provide virtually all our historical meteorological knowledge until the U.S. Army forts began their systematic, but often short-term (in number of years) daily record of weather in 1819.
