Counseling From The Use Of Existential Principles, Otelia Kay Kraft Stensrud Jan 1976

Counseling From The Use Of Existential Principles, Otelia Kay Kraft Stensrud

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Existentialism offers principles which establish a basis for formulating an understanding of man. This philosophy presents perceptions of man which, if considered by counselors, could expand and enrich the counselors' understanding of human existence. The intent of this study was to show that as a result of insight into existential principles and the implementation of these principles in counseling practice, counselors could be better able to facilitate client growth.

The first chapter of this study discussed principles of existential philosophy which established a basis for understanding human existence. Significant principles included the importance of each individual and his experienced world, …

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum Jan 1976

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(Presented as a part of the Symposium on Man at the Centennial Program of the Iowa Academy of Science, Ames, Iowa April 18, 1975.)

Alexis Carrel, a Nobel laureate of 1912, published a book in 1935 that he titled Man the Unknown. This might have been an appropriate theme for this paper. As Carrel pointed out 40 years ago, although there is much that is known about man, there is need of a much more profound knowledge of ourselves. And not only a knowledge of man as an isolated fragment in the cosmos, but, perhaps even more importantly, …

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson Jan 1976

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Generic man has evidenced curiosity concerning self and the external world since the beginning of recorded history. How is the external world related to man and how does it affect man's nature? Possible answers to these understandings involve both objective and subjective experiences. The objective world can be perceived by others and verified. Similar interpretations are often functions of common environments and educational dogma. Subjective experience is a private matter which may deny communication, or if communicated, may deny common interpretation. It is hoped that primarily through focusing upon objective experiences as recorded in the history of the development of …

Edrioasteroids (Echinodermata) Of The Maquoketa Formation Of Iowa, B. M. Bell, H. L. Strimple, C. O. Levorson Jan 1976

Edrioasteroids (Echinodermata) Of The Maquoketa Formation Of Iowa, B. M. Bell, H. L. Strimple, C. O. Levorson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two specimens of edrioasteroids have been found in the Maquoketa Formation, Richmond Group, Upper Ordovician of Iowa. This occurrence extends the geographic range of both genera, lsorophus Foerste (1917) and Edriophus Bell (1975) into Iowa which is the westernmost occurrence of these genera formerly recorded only east of Illinois. Isorophus was found in a horizon essentially barren of fossils but Edriophus is coexistent with more common echinoderms of the Maquoketa, including the crinoid genera Carabocrinus and Porocrinus.

The Predictive Relationship Of Tutorial Teaching Competencies On Group Instruction Performance For Prospective Special Education Teachers, Sarah Jane Frudden Jan 1976

The Predictive Relationship Of Tutorial Teaching Competencies On Group Instruction Performance For Prospective Special Education Teachers, Sarah Jane Frudden

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to determine if the skills acquired by trainees in the tutorial experience of the University of Northern Iowa competency-based program act as predictors in the group instruction experience.

This end was accomplished by comparing the scores obtained in the Phase I individual performance criteria against the composite score received in Phase II. A Pearson product moment correlation coefficient analysis was used to determine which individual Phase I criteria correlated significantly with the Phase II composite score. A multiple linear regression analysis was utilized to determine which criteria most highly contributed to the variance of …

Mechanically Induced Karst Development Along The Silurian Escarpment In Northeastern Iowa, Ardith K. Hansel Jan 1976

Mechanically Induced Karst Development Along The Silurian Escarpment In Northeastern Iowa, Ardith K. Hansel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research investigates the spatial distribution of surface karst features along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa. A 30 square mile area of Elk Townships in Cla:rton and Delaware Counties was selected for intensive investigation. All surface karst features within the study area were located in the field and plotted on a 7.5 minute topographic map. A generic model is presented to explain the process, causation, and geologic time period of active karstification. Field evidence supports the hypothesis that the karst landforms along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa are not solutionnl in nature, but rather mechanically induced features. The …

Altis ; An Original Film ..., Nicholi Joseph Humpal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The National Hot Air Balloon Championships are held each year in Indianola, Iowa. It was several years ago that I first read about the "balloon races" in newspapers and knew that I wanted to attend the event. I don't know at what point my desire to go to the event became a desire to film it. Early in 1974 I decided that a film shot at this event would be the basis of my creative thesis for the Master of Arts degree in the Department of Speech at the University of Northern Iowa. The film was never thought of as …

An Analysis Of The Major Functions Of The Directors Of Special Education In Iowa, Thomas E. Twait

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The functions that special education directors in Iowa perform are broad in nature and specific in detail, Directors need to accomplish their tasks successfully if exceptional children are to receive quality education programs and services. The Review of Literature is concerned with the administration of special education programs and services, this is outlined in three areas. The three areas include: 1) the development of a philosophy establishing the need for increased and improved special education programs and services with qualified directors; 2) the establishment of the roles or functions to be performed by special education directors; and 3) the recognition …

Separate Factor Analyses Of The Iowa Test Of Preschool Development For Groups Of Black And White Children, Stephen Wayne Blake Jan 1976

Separate Factor Analyses Of The Iowa Test Of Preschool Development For Groups Of Black And White Children, Stephen Wayne Blake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the present study the factor structure of the Iowa Test of Preschool Development (ITPD) was examined separately for black and white children to assess the construct validity of the ITPD scales for each racial group and the degree to which factor structures of the black and white groups were congruent. Since the ITPD is intended to be used as a basis for programs involving individual assessment and remediation of the problem areas identified, it is advantageous that its construct validity be established. Intercorrelations of the scaled scores on the eight level I skill area achievement indexes (ages 2 to …

Marital Adjustment And Self-Concept In Married College Students, James Russell Moneypenny Jan 1976

Marital Adjustment And Self-Concept In Married College Students, James Russell Moneypenny

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In light of the widespread dissatisfaction with marital relationships currently being expressed by couples in the United States, a research study concerning marital adjustment and self-concept was undertaken. Self-concept was chosen to be examined in relation to marital adjustment because of its generally agreed upon importance in interpersonal behavior. A positive relationship between self-concept and marital adjustment would provide a conceptual framework from which to view marital adjustment and would suggest therapeutic approaches for dealing with the problem. The research problem, then, was to examine the relationship between marital adjustment and self-concept.

A review of the literature showed marital adjustment …

The Effects Of Teacher Reinforcement On Student Attitudes And Achievement, Ray Douglas Mccollum Jan 1976

The Effects Of Teacher Reinforcement On Student Attitudes And Achievement, Ray Douglas Mccollum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the effects of teacher reinforcement on both reading achievement and students' attitudes toward school. It was hypothesized that students of high reinforcing teachers would achieve greater reading gains and would exhibit more positive attitudes toward school than students of lower reinforcing teachers.

Eight classrooms of second and third-grade students (N=139) and their teachers from a rural school district were involved in this study. The students were administered the reading section of the Metropolitan Achievement Test and the "Describe Your School" questionnaire during the fall of 1975. subsequent to this pre-assessment, the eight teachers were observed by independent …
