Christine Compton presented a full graduate piano recital on Monday, November 6th, 2023. The recital was presented at 6:00 p.m. in Davis Hall in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This recital was given in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. It consisted of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, and Claude Debussy. This abstract contains further discussion of performed works.

Stakeholder Impact On Individual Development Within A Transition Worksite Program: A Case Study, Kong Chen

Emerging adults (Arnett, 2000) struggled with their transition from school to employment (Arnett, 2015). Within that group, individuals with disabilities were in a particularly vulnerable and disadvantaged situation. The 2009 to 2019 employment rates for emerging adults with disabilities (33-39%) were far lower than for those without disabilities (73-79%; U.S. Census, 2019). There are employment programs designed to assist and support individuals with disabilities to transition to and retain employment. One such program, Project SEARCH, has served over 34,000 young adults with intellectual disabilities while achieving an average 72% employment rate when program participants had completed the training. Although prior research highlights the increase of stress as students near graduation, little research has explored how students manage the transition out of higher education. The purpose of this study was to investigate graduating students’ concerns, the emotional impact of those concerns, the discovery of information related to adulting practices, and the potential impact of a curriculum-infused exit program. Teachers are unhappy, stressed, and leaving the field at an alarming rate. This paper analyzes how teacher happiness is related to resilience and retention. It also looks for patterns that identify what happy teachers do differently at work. To complete this investigation, current K-12 public school teachers throughout Iowa completed electronic surveys that assessed their happiness, resilience, and work life. These surveys included the Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999), the Brief Resilience Scale (Smith, et al., 2008), and 14 additional survey questions created by the researcher. This thesis studies the shift of the true crime genre from art to inescapable propaganda. This change is due, in part, to the politization of the genre by modern society. This includes the concept of the “most dead” seen within the true crime genre over the past several decades. The idea of the most dead is the belief that some victims of crimes are more or less dead depending on how marketable their demographic is. Most Army ROTC programs conduct physical training (PT) only 3 days per week and no study has directly compared the effects of conducting PT 5 days per week on ACFT scores, ruck march performance, and aerobic capacity. Past research has indicated greater performance adaptations with a concurrent training program and some research has shown that current ROTC PT programs may not be optimal in physically preparing ROTC cadets. Moonmilk is a white substance mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that is often found in limestone caves. It is one of many mineral composites, or speleothems, in Wind Cave National Park South Dakota and is thought to be formed by microbial activity. With cell growth being the main focus of our research, we chose to study DNA polymerase alpha. DNA polymerase alpha is likely to be involved in cell growth as it is the enzyme that starts DNA replication. Control of this enzyme might lead to decreased cell growth in cancer or increased cell growth in damaged spinal cord tissue. We chose the thermophilic fungus Thermomyces lanuginosus for the study of the enzyme due to the ability to compare the enzyme’s activity during fungal growth at different temperatures. In an attempt to extract a green dye from newsprint advertisements, it was serendipitously discovered that a purple substance can be extracted from newsprint paper using methanol or acetic acid.1 Further investigations involving blank newsprint paper showed that the purple substance was a part of the paper itself rather than a component of the ink in the advertisements. Soxhlet extraction was used on the blank newspaper print to obtain the compound. Primarily, this fungus is known for producing enzymes with a wide variety of industrial uses. These enzymes include xylanases, which are produced by T. lanuginosus in greater amounts than any other fungus (Mchunu et al., 2013). Water samples were collected in May 2022 from WTH lake and silent lake located in Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. From the water samples collected, 8 pure fungal colonies were isolated. All samples underwent chemical extraction, growth inhibition testing, proton-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1H NMR), and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Three pure colonies also underwent DNA extraction, and sequencing of the ITS region for genus level identification. Using electron beam radiation, as found in a scanning electron microscope, it is possible to induce the local intercalation of carbon nanoparticles into two dimensional layered materials. This technique can be used to form insulating and optically active nanostructures in samples ranging from graphite to BSSCO. In this study, the evolution of these features with time is explored to determine the stability of such nanoparticles in layered materials.
