Alma’s Way, a bilingual children’s animated television program from Fred Rogers Productions about a six year old Puerto Rican girl living in the Bronx of New York City with her family, premiered on PBS Kids in October 2021. Through the use of discourse analysis, this academic paper explores characters’ use of linguistic and cultural practices. Discourse analysis focuses on the main character, Alma, as well as her friends, her immediate family (Junior, Mami, Papi), and her mother’s side of the family (Abuelo, Tía Gloria, Uncle Nestor, Cousin Eddie). Discussion of “The Great Resignation” suggests that burnout may influence faculty members’ decisions to withdraw from their field (Daumiller et al., 2021; Klotz, 2021; Sheather, 2021). Still, much of the evidence for faculty burnout and turnover is anecdotal, and further investigation is necessary to determine the impact of burnout and other job demands on turnover intentions.

● In this study, we predicted that participants with higher levels of burnout would report higher levels of turnover intentions (i.e., reported likelihood of leaving their current position for another or retiring early).

In the United States, 21% of adults have a mental illness. Prevalence of mental illness tends to be highest among young adults (18-25 years old) and lowest among older adults (50 years or older; National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).

Rural communities represent 19% of the United States population (Oser et al., 2022). Research has shown that rates of mental illness are the same in rural areas as in urban areas (Morales et al., 2020) and that suicide rates are significantly higher within rural communities (Brunk, 2010). The Role Of Psychology In People's Attitude Toward Legal Abortion In The U.S., Chloe Thostenson, Jiuqing Cheng

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

This study examined the role of psychological factors in people’ attitude toward abortion. A sample of 294 U.S. adult citizens were recruited from mTurk in October 2022. A principal component analysis revealed that people’s attitude toward abortion was grouped into two categories: traumatic (e.g. pregnant due to rape) and elective (e.g., unmarried pregnancy). After controlling for religious belief and political ideology, empathy toward mother vs. unborn, and internal locus of control, was strongly related to the attitude toward abortion in both categories. Greater need for cognition correlated with more support of elective but not traumatic abortion.
