Interior Design For The Classroom, Jessica Hellmann Jan 2007

Interior Design For The Classroom, Jessica Hellmann

Honors Program Theses

For my honors thesis, I chose to investigate the topic of classroom design. 1 specifically focused on classroom layout and seating arrangement, color schemes, visual displays (student work compared to commercially prepared products), and accommodations that could be made in the physical environment for students with special needs. All of these components of the interior design of the classroom greatly impact student learning and should be carefully analyzed and evaluated before setting up one's classroom.

Microbiological Enhancement Of Phosphorus Sequestration In Iron-Enriched Sediments, Lindsay Marie Sandersfeld Jan 2007

Microbiological Enhancement Of Phosphorus Sequestration In Iron-Enriched Sediments, Lindsay Marie Sandersfeld

Honors Program Theses

An overabundance of phosphorus, primarily due to agricultural run off, is the source of increases in unwanted algae in Iowa's surface waters. Oxidized iron found in mine tailings will sequester phosphorus in sediments and prevent it from entering surface waters. Therefore, adding mine tailings to wetlands is a cheap and easy way to eliminate phosphorus pollution. This phosphorus removal process is enhanced by a microbial component that biochemically solubilizes iron tailings which allows them to efficiently react with free phosphorus in the water. The purpose of this project was to characterize the microbial component in this process. Ferric citrate medium …

A Sense Of Place: An Analysis Of The Role Of Environmental Factors In Presidential Speeches, Timothy Michael Mccue Jan 2007

A Sense Of Place: An Analysis Of The Role Of Environmental Factors In Presidential Speeches, Timothy Michael Mccue

Honors Program Theses

My research will address some of the unspoken communication that happens when presidents give speeches. In particular I will be addressing environmental factors encountered when presidents give speeches. I have identified a few components that are most important to the environment when a president gives a speech. First I will look at the topic of the speech and the peripheral factors that influence what a president talks about in public. I will only be looking at topic and some of the factors such as timing and other political climate factors that influence topic selection rather than what the president says …

Academic And Social Self-Efficacy In Honors And Non-Honors University Students, Carmen Marie Krapfl Jan 2007

Academic And Social Self-Efficacy In Honors And Non-Honors University Students, Carmen Marie Krapfl

Honors Program Theses

Self-efficacy research has shown that successful past experiences have an influential impact on self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). The purpose of this study was to compare academic and social self-efficacy between university honors and non-honors students. It was hypothesized that honors students would score higher on academic self-efficacy, but would have lower social self efficacy than their non-honors peers. Participants were invited to complete questionnaires on self-efficacy and background information. Results show that honors and non-honors students do not differ significantly in their general or social self-efficacy, but honors students had significantly higher academic self-efficacy. Further research is needed into the cause …

Sound Spectral Analysis Of Uni Carillon Bells, Kimberly Cordray Jan 2007

Sound Spectral Analysis Of Uni Carillon Bells, Kimberly Cordray

Honors Program Theses

The campanile located in the center of the University of Northern Iowa campus has been a symbol of the university since its completion in 1926. This 100 foot tall structure was the chosen memorial celebrating the 50th anniversary of the university and dedicated to the founders and builders. But this towering structure is more than just a popular gathering point and icon, it houses 4 7 bells and a carillon instrument which plays these bells.

Bells are a unique and complex instrument. It is not hard to comprehend when you think about what a bell is. A carillon bell is …

An Analysis Of The Triple Goddess: Images Of Persephone, Kali, And Nephthys, Kimberly Elaine Holladay Jan 2007

An Analysis Of The Triple Goddess: Images Of Persephone, Kali, And Nephthys, Kimberly Elaine Holladay

Honors Program Theses

How are the women of ancient religions portrayed? Are the women of religion typical, everyday women or celebrated queens wrapped in gold? The truth is that no single image exists that can be pointed to as the iconic goddess. The idea of a female deity can be startling to those who practice in Abrahamic religions but the appearance of such a character has a role, if not a lead, in many world religions and myths. These goddesses act as role models and guides for many people, especially female worshippers. After the female deity is acknowledged and accepted as a integral …

Repeat After Me: The Use Of Errorless Learning In The Foreign Language Classroom, Mark Adam Foster Jan 2007

Repeat After Me: The Use Of Errorless Learning In The Foreign Language Classroom, Mark Adam Foster

Honors Program Theses

Errorless learning is one of these concepts. It is a technique that allows for efficient learning devoid of the frustrating process of making countless errors; something that is usually associated with the mastering of almost any topic. Errorless learning has proved beneficial to many specialized populations, yet has eluded implementation in a normal classroom setting. It seems especially well suited for use in foreign language classrooms. It has been noted that these classrooms often lack specialized teaching strategies, particularly in regards to vocabulary and pronunciation learning (Gonzalez-Bueno, 2001; Barcroft, 2004). Errorless learning is an effective teaching strategy, and could be …

Lights Up! On Teaching Hints For Novice Theatre Educators, Chelsea Cunningham Jan 2007

Lights Up! On Teaching Hints For Novice Theatre Educators, Chelsea Cunningham

Honors Program Theses

With Playhouse interns coming from a variety of learning and teaching backgrounds, it occurred to me that there was a need for training that introduces all of these new, young teachers to working with all groups of students, grades K-12, in the theatre. Thus, I have created Lights Up!, a resource stripped of educational psychology jargon that is meant to help theatre students teach and to help education majors acquire the skill of using theatre as a tool.

Everybody's Doing It But Me: Comparing Pluralistic Ignorance Across Behaviors, Katherine S. Corker Jan 2007

Everybody's Doing It But Me: Comparing Pluralistic Ignorance Across Behaviors, Katherine S. Corker

Honors Program Theses

This study examined pluralistic ignorance (PI) for a variety of behaviors and attitudes such as health behaviors ( exercise frequency, fruits and vegetables consumed, personal hygiene, marijuana use), subjective well-being, and television habits. Student and nonstudent participants indicated their, their best friend's, the average student's, and the average American adult's attitudes on various topics (e.g., drugs, personal well-being; Prentice & Miller, 1993) and completed measures of alienation (Dean, 1961 ). Student and nonstudent populations showed PI; however, some items showed greater PI than others. High PI items tended to be health behaviors for the student sample and television habits for …

Financial Planning Tools For A Uni Graduate, Scott Ivan Cochran

Honors Program Theses

This project will research financial planning tools for a new University of Northern Iowa (UNI) graduate. The following two research questions will be considered. First, what should graduates know about budgeting, investing, insurance, and spending? Second, what are the tax considerations related to these financial matters? The research for the project will be completed through reading articles and books from the library and recent online sources. Financial planning is important for UNI graduates because all of them will need to make many decisions related to finances over their lifetime. In the article Grads in Dark Over Finances, a poll of …

Crippling America, Health Care Fraud Incentives, Colby Goetsch Jan 2007

Crippling America, Health Care Fraud Incentives, Colby Goetsch

Honors Program Theses

Clearly an imbalance is occurring in the system as health care fraud claims reach new bounds. There are many types of health care fraud, but the most general analysis involves the submission of claims that never occurred for reimbursement. This thesis will analyze the incentives acting upon different groups affected by the specific act of health care fraud of submitting fraudulent claims, and also possible solutions to change these incentives into the public's best interest. An analysis of the incentives given to the key players in this game will hopefully show where legislators can focus to improve the current state …

Poverty Reduction: An Evaluation Of Micro Finance And Foreign Aid, Wade Summers Jan 2007

Poverty Reduction: An Evaluation Of Micro Finance And Foreign Aid, Wade Summers

Honors Program Theses

Over the last 50 years, the United States has been pouring money into foreign aid, yet this aid has failed to bring the poor out of poverty. Micro finance institutions claim to they are able to increase the wealth of the poor. This paper will compare micro finance's ability to alleviate poverty against traditional uses of foreign aid. The results of this paper are while the profitability of micro finance is not clear, independent studies indicate that it has been successful in bringing the poor out of poverty. This paper concludes that micro finance should receive a larger portion of …

Rule Making K-2, Regents' Center For Early Developmental Education

Open Educational Resources

Physical science centers provide children with opportunities for active, hands-on learning. This can sometimes result in problems that need to be addressed in order for the center to run smoothly. Bringing the children together to create the rules for the classroom or for specific learning centers is an excellent way to promote collaboration, community building, and perspective taking. This activity also provides a rich opportunity to model and build on a variety of literacy skills.

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Bagasse fly ash, a waste material generated in sugar industry, collected from a local sugar Firm at Kom-Ombo district (42Km - distance, on the northern direction, from the mid city of Aswan ), Aswan Governorate, Egypt was utilized as a low cost and effective adsorbing surface for the removal of Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ and Cr3+ from the industrial wastewater. The adsorption capacity was followed as a function of pH, adsorbent dose, metal ion concentration, shaking time and divers ions. Under the optimum conditions used, more than 95% of some of the ions …

The Effects Of Smoking On Low Birth Weight Babies: A Cultural Influence?, Jodie Sample Jan 2007

The Effects Of Smoking On Low Birth Weight Babies: A Cultural Influence?, Jodie Sample

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

The persistence of low birth weight babies born to mothers who smoke continues to be a source of social concern. Recent research determined that a pregnant woman who smokes is 1.5 times more likely to deliver a low birth weight baby than a nonsmoker (Ventura et al. 2003). Low birth weight affects one in 13 babies each year in the United States and is a factor in 65% of infant deaths (March of Dimes, 2003). According to the March of Dimes Foundation, babies born at a low birth weight (2500 grams or less) are at a greater risk for mental …

Teflon And An Increased Cancer Risk Remains Unproven In Humans, Jennifer Hitchon Jan 2007

Teflon And An Increased Cancer Risk Remains Unproven In Humans, Jennifer Hitchon

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

DuPont manufactures a non-stick coating for pans brand-named Teflon. Teflon sealed pans make cooking easier - eggs won't stick to the frying pan and cookies won't stick to the cookie sheet. Yet researchers have long worried about negative effects of Teflon and the chemical compounds used to make it, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): is PFOA a carcinogen? Instead of waiting until the Teflon coating sloughs off in black flakes, should households get rid of their non-stick pans now and return to using PAM and Crisco in mass quantities? PFOA is not exclusively used in Teflon; the chemical is also useful in …

Qualitative methods were used to examine the experiences of …

Contesting The Social Borderlands: Portraits Of Three Young People With Significant Disabilities And Their Struggle For Positive Relationships, Janet Story Sauer Jan 2007

Contesting The Social Borderlands: Portraits Of Three Young People With Significant Disabilities And Their Struggle For Positive Relationships, Janet Story Sauer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Over eighty countries are signatories to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2007), which states "that disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers" (p. 1). The United States is not a signatory to the Convention but the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 recognizes disability as "a natural part of the human experience" and one which ensures children's rights to "contribute to society, and experience full integration and inclusion into all aspects of society." This qualitative study examined the complexities involved in the communication and co-construction of meaning …

Development Of A Core Stability Model, Tricia Lynn Majewski-Haak Jan 2007

Development Of A Core Stability Model, Tricia Lynn Majewski-Haak

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The concept of core stability has transcended physical medicine as well as health and physical performance. It is now considered a fundamental component of general fitness and rehabilitation programming. However, the definition of core stability, its components, and the assessment techniques have not been established. The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive core stability model addressing its definition, components, and assessment techniques. The methods utilized in this study incorporated the Delphi technique to develop a unified core stability model.

A group of 15 content experts from United States and Canada, representing a variety of disciplines, participated in …
