Selecting U.S. Senators By The Original Method: Intersecting Mathematics And Social Studies, Bonnie H. Litwiller, David R. Duncan

Faculty Work

Mathematics teachers are concerned with incorporating connections with other academic areas in their mathematics curriculum. Social science provides a rich source of data which can be collected, organized, and interpreted by mathematics students. These data become of particular interest to many students if they involve political questions and processes.

Development Of A Data Acquisition And Interface Module For A Fuel Cell Power Station, Kenan Baltaci Jan 2008

Development Of A Data Acquisition And Interface Module For A Fuel Cell Power Station, Kenan Baltaci

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Fuel cell stacks containing hundreds of individual cells are capable of generating high voltage and current values needed for transportation, commercial, residential, portable and industrial power applications. Although majority of hydrogen produced today comes from reformulated natural gas generated through a process that creates a significant amount of carbon dioxide, fuel cell is still a viable energy source for the future electrical power applications. One of the hard cases of the fuel-cell power systems is proper monitoring, instrumentation and data acquisition of system parameters such as fuel flow into the system, AC and DC voltage values, load current, humidity, power, …

Reading Recovery: A Major Component Of Many Rti Models, Salli Forbes, Beth Swenson, Tonya Person

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

The response to intervention (RTI) initiative is contained in the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The purpose of RTI is to provide struggling readers with expert intervening instruction so that these students will not need special education placement and services. The 2004 IDEA reauthorization allows local school districts to allocate up to 15% of their funding targeted for students with disabilities to be used for general education interventions. The goal of this initiative is to significantly reduce the numbers of struggling readers who are identified as students with disabilities.

Surface Temperature Mapping Of The University Of Northern Iowa Campus Using High Resolution Thermal Infrared Aerial Imageries, Alexander Savelyev, Ramanathan Sugumaran Jan 2008

Surface Temperature Mapping Of The University Of Northern Iowa Campus Using High Resolution Thermal Infrared Aerial Imageries, Alexander Savelyev, Ramanathan Sugumaran

Faculty Work

The goal of this project was to map the surface temperature of the University of Northern Iowa campus using high-resolution thermal infrared aerial imageries. A thermal camera with a spectral bandwidth of 3.0-5.0 µm was flown at the average altitude of 600 m, achieving ground resolution of 29 cm. Ground control data was used to construct the pixelto-temperature conversion model, which was later used to produce temperature maps of the entire campus and also for validation of the model. The temperature map then was used to assess the building rooftop conditions and steam line faults in the study area. Assessment …

Duality In Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And "Dionea", Lauren Mcdonald Jan 2008

Duality In Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, The Picture Of Dorian Gray, And "Dionea", Lauren Mcdonald

Student Writing Awards

Duality appears as a common theme in late-Victorian literature. Duality serves as a way for the modern reader to analyze late-Victorian literature and common late-Victorian culture as well. Through studies of pieces of literature such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and "Dionea" readers can see this common theme. Despite the prevalence of duality and the both/and perspective in late-Victorian literature the idea of duality itself was not traditionally accepted in late-Victorian culture. Victorians preferred to look at things in an either/or perspective. I will write about Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, …

“By The Stroke Of A Pen”: A Brief Look At Writer’S Representations Of Race, Injustice, And Violence, Audra Kremer

Student Writing Awards

When studying American history, it is easy to dismiss racism as a thing of the past, something that we admit is still present but that we think must be better than it once was. Charles Chesnutt wrote The Marrow of Tradition over one hundred years ago, using the title itself to concentrate on how the very core of Southern Tradition is based on racism. Chesnutt would have been disappointed to see how far into the future this ideology extended, and that it would not be until the civil rights movement of the 1970’s that blacks and whites were granted equal …

"Grandpa had a stroke." My dad’s voice echoed across a vast distance and my hand tightened around the phone. I heard my voice respond sympathetically, a reflex. It was like hearing something sad on the news, but what do you do? My parents are divorced, my dad lives thousands of miles away, and I barely know my grandpa.

The most embarrassing secrets are usually the most boring. I might, for instance, tell you that I am 39 and like to hum show tunes in the shower and wear briefs and not boxers, but I would never tell you that every Thursday, at precisely seven a.m., I step on to the Number 7 bus at the 100th Street stop and do not get off for hours.

"Today my friend Ralph told me that cheese is just as tasty three weeks past the expiration date. He says that cheese is meant to be moldy." It’s my Daughter Morgan’s voice echoing in the kitchen of our high-rise penthouse suite. She has quite the imagination. So much that she seems to have dreamed up a new friend she refers to as, Ralph.

Recovering From A Wardrobe Malfunction, Sarah Wagner

I am finishing up the final day of my field experience in an English class filled with junior and senior high school students. I have a lesson prepared, so I leave my house plenty early in order to setup. I close the door behind me, breathing in the crisp October air, ready to take on whatever lies ahead. I am dressed from head to toe in a darling “teacher outfit” that I have reserved for this very day. A red turtleneck sweater, a brand-new black skirt (zipper included), a new pair of thigh-high panty hose, and a pair of black …

Nora woke up before her alarm went off. She half-wished she could go back to sleep, but her internal clock was too stubborn to allow it. The room was still dark, and she lay for several minutes, listening to the silence and watching the glowing red numbers on the digital clock across the room. She treated the device warily, like a wild animal that sat encaged on her bookshelf. She hated the harsh sound of it enough to get up every morning and trot across the room to turn it off before it awoke.

"Stand And Unfold Yourself": The Subjectivity Of Interpretation In Hamlet, Josh Mahoney Jan 2008

"Stand And Unfold Yourself": The Subjectivity Of Interpretation In Hamlet, Josh Mahoney

Student Writing Awards

Critical interpretations of Hamlet are largely dependent upon the cultural zeitgeist that provides the cognitive paradigm through which critics formulate their ideas. The zeitgeist also influences which text of Hamlet to consider, since no single authoritative manuscript of the play exists. Critics must also consider Hamlet beyond a simple textual reading, since the competing documents of Q1, Q2 and F1—among later additions—only serve as the basis for theatrical representations. The inherent fluidity of performance is apparent to anyone who has ever been to the theater, even a modern one. Actors embodying characters on stage in front of an audience make …

The Moral Of That Old Story, Holly Malm Jan 2008

The Moral Of That Old Story, Holly Malm

Student Writing Awards

If there is a moral to the story for Sister Carrie by Theodor Dreiser, it is not easily discovered. The story follows no set pattern. There is no music to bring the tale to a neat end. There is no repentance with clear cut reasons why each character failed. The reader must instead ferret out “the moral of the story” themselves. Strangely enough, it seems the only way to do this is to use the old formulaic moral stories themselves. And what formula can we use to evaluate Sister Carrie? At first, it seems apparent that this novel is a …

The korl woman portrayed within Rebecca Davis’ work, Life in the Iron-Mills is an essential element to understanding the story and its social implications. Additionally, one’s understanding of the possible representations the sculpture has is vital to one’s understanding of the class struggles existing during this time. According to editor of Life in the Iron-Mills, Cecelia Tichi, “korl”, as referred to throughout the story is colloquial speech for “scorl” or “scoria” a product of smelted iron ore (18). The sculpture Hugh creates from this substance represents several different ideas and issues prominent during this time, as well as bringing to …

Imagi-Nation, John Wagner

For as long as I can remember I was constantly in my own little world. This was the case for most of my childhood and, well, is still the case to this day. While it may be more of a mental state these days, it was literal as I was growing up. This literal, physical world was my own backyard. I had a backyard worth boasting about; a backyard so inspiring that William Wordsworth himself would pump out a poem in five minutes or less. All right, so that might be a bit of an embellishment, especially considering he would …

The Quilt Enchiladas, Mallorie De Hoyos

They say smell is a powerful sense that can trigger memories long forgotten. When I smell onions, bell pepper, and smoked jalapeños I see my grandmother—a vivid image of a woman, who has worked all her life and has never had it easy. As a child I would play in my grandmother’s backyard with my other cousins making mud pies and stuffing up all the ant holes that poke out of the ground. My grandmothers’ kitchen window overlooked the backyard and the aromas from her cooking would tickle our noses and made our mouths water until we ran inside to …

What Role Should Subsidies Play For Microfinance Institutions, Emily Anne Cormaney Jan 2008

What Role Should Subsidies Play For Microfinance Institutions, Emily Anne Cormaney

Honors Program Theses

Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below" [Sengupta and Aubuchon 2008, 9]. The so-called "microfinance revolution" has come a long way since the establishment of the Grameen Bank in 1983. At present, it is estimated that there are between 1,000 and 2,500 microfinance institutions (MFIs) serving 67.6 million clients [Sengupta and Aubuchon 2008, 10].

MFIs provide financial services, such as loans, savings, and insurance, to the poor. The hope is that the services MFis provide will allow the poor to escape …

Militarization Versus Democratization: A Case Study Of Pakistan And India's Divergent Political Paths Since Independence, Zenab Afzal Chowdhry Jan 2008

Militarization Versus Democratization: A Case Study Of Pakistan And India's Divergent Political Paths Since Independence, Zenab Afzal Chowdhry

Honors Program Theses

Since the fall of colonialism, countries once ruled by French, British, Spanish, and Belgian empires have embarked upon state and nation-building, constructing social, political, and economic institutions to solidify their status as a functional and sovereign state. While several former colonies have slowly adopted democratic policies and institutions, many countries in South Asia and Latin America have undergone a series of military dictatorships, communism, socialism, and other governing forms. Some of these regime forms, as in the case of Cuba and communism or Pakistan and its military dictatorship, have proved resilient in the face of what scholars have called "waves …

Risk Classification And Ratemaking In Insurance, Erin Conrad Jan 2008

Risk Classification And Ratemaking In Insurance, Erin Conrad

Honors Program Theses

Actuaries in insurance companies strive to put a price tag on future risk. They use a variety of analyses and models to accurately price insurance products. Models discussed in this paper include the pure premium method, the loss ratio method, the minimum bias procedure, and generalized linear models. Each of these pricing mechanisms are used to determine accurate and actuarially sound rates for insurance products. Competition in the industry forces companies to find more refined ways to predict the future costs of a risk. Classification systems allow companies to include a variety of rating variables so that each risk is …

Birthrate And Population Density As Predictors Of Quality Of Life, Jessica M. Young Jan 2008

Birthrate And Population Density As Predictors Of Quality Of Life, Jessica M. Young

Honors Program Theses

It is thought that economies can benefit from developing their members by providing more opportunities. Thus, when populations grow quickly or are large, quality of life may decrease due to fewer opportunities. To test this hypothesis, two studies were used to investigate correlations between population and quality of life variables. The first study considered U.S. states, while the second study examined countries. Population measures included birthrate and population density, as well as population growth rate for countries. State quality of life measures were: graduation rates, GDP, unemployment, poverty, violent crime rate, and income. Country measures were: life expectancy, literacy, GDP …

The Leap From Playing To Performing: Representing The Composer And Performer In Classical Music Performance, Rachel A. Price Jan 2008

The Leap From Playing To Performing: Representing The Composer And Performer In Classical Music Performance, Rachel A. Price

Honors Program Theses

The effect of a great musical performance defies description. It is brilliant and memorable, a unique and influential moment in time. But how does a musician achieve this level of performance? What is it that makes any performance special? There are no simple answers, but as musicians we are constantly exploring, trying to find some answers through trial and error. It is this exploration, and the lessons we learn along the way, that make music meaningful and unique to each performer.

The life of a musician would be much easier if one could answer the question, "How does one perform …

A Fundamental Region On Two Copies Of The Hyperbolic Plane, Alyssa Jesse Soenksen Jan 2008

A Fundamental Region On Two Copies Of The Hyperbolic Plane, Alyssa Jesse Soenksen

Honors Program Theses

Hyperbolic geometry is a beautiful, non-Euclidean space that hosts spectacular patterns and infinite designs. To learn about this space, this paper will focus on how linear fractional transformations act on this space and the patterns that reveal themselves. To expand on this, I will construct a fundamental domain under these mappings and explore the coding of closed geodesics on the fundamental domain, which requires an understanding of continued fractions. My research will then be applied to two copies of the hyperbolic plane. My goal is to understand fundamental regions in this space and eventually the geodesics.

This paper is intended …

Debian Clusters For Education And Research: The Missing Manual, Kristina Wanous Jan 2008

Debian Clusters for Education and Research: The Missing Manual [4], or just "Debian Clusters" for short, meets the needs of this growing group of people. The Debian Clusters project is an online resource for anyone wishing to set up a cluster, particularly for those using Debian as the operating system. It features detailed step-by-step tutorials for every part of cluster setup and administration. In order to be accessible to people new to clusters, the walkthroughs assume no previous knowledge of clustering or networking and explain the principles and vocabulary behind the steps, yet are complex and detailed enough to be …
