Communicating Worry: An Intrapersonal Perspective, Linda Vangelis Jan 2009

Communicating Worry: An Intrapersonal Perspective, Linda Vangelis

Iowa Journal of Communication

Existing social science research on worry generally takes a psychological slant, focusing on categories and characteristics of worry, and the reasons people worry. Some of the current literature also provides strategies on how to cope with worry. This essay extends the current research by offering the reader insights into the intrapersonal communication of this emotion. This article is an autoethnographic, layered account of the author's lived experience as a worrier. Through the use of episodic vignettes, the author explores her thoughts and feelings while in the throes of a cycle of worry, offering the readers a glimpse into the everyday, …

The Purpose Of Facebook: The Value Of Facebook Friends In Increasing Self-Perceived Popularity, Michael J. Cronin Jan 2009

The Purpose Of Facebook: The Value Of Facebook Friends In Increasing Self-Perceived Popularity, Michael J. Cronin

Honors Program Theses

A survey of 407 students was conducted at a medium-sized Midwestern university to examine what motivates college students to have friends on Facebook. The goal of the study was to see if people interact with more Facebook friends than they do offline friends on a regular basis and to see if the primary reason students become friends with others on Facebook is to increase their popularity. The results suggest that students do not become Facebook friends with others to increase their popularity, which is in contrast to previous research. Results were inconclusive in determining if people regularly interact with more …

Managing Generational Diversity In The 21st Century, Matthew Joshua Rohden

Honors Program Theses

"Much has been written to describe generational differences in today's workforce, including the problems of managing ateam of multi-generational workers. These differences are often a source of conflict among employees but they could also be a source of strength." (Patota, 2007) This research is intended to show what type of generational diversity is present in the workplace in Iowa. It will be designed to show what types of conflict are common in the workplace due to generational diversity. Another aspect is the perception of each generation towards the other generations which will also be covered by this research. This information …

The Financial Fiasco: What Started It And How Long Will It Last?, Jodi Sweeney

Honors Program Theses

Throughout my college career, I have been able to watch something quite phenomenal unfold within my fields of study, real estate and finance. In the fall of 2005, the real estate market was still hot and booming. As the months and years have gone on, something happened that very few saw coming: A financial crisis that caused such turmoil Wall Street as we knew it will be dramatically changed. What caused this inevitable downturn? How much damage will it cause before it stops? What changes are needed to bring an end to this financial predicament? After thoroughly analyzing the critical …

Does Race Affect The Salaries Of Nfl Players?, Joshua Patrick Mahoney Jan 2009

Does Race Affect The Salaries Of Nfl Players?, Joshua Patrick Mahoney

Honors Program Theses

Previous studies of the National Football League (NFL) players' salaries have used different methods to evaluate the compensation of players in the League. Kahn [ 1991] finds a significant correlation between the race of an NFL player and the racial makeup of the metropolitan area in which he plays. In my study, I use a complete data set of players from the 2005 football season to determine whether race has a measurable impact on players' salaries. My results suggest that race is not a significant factor in determining an NFL player's compensation. Also, customer discrimination does not appear to affect …

Comparing Single Member District Plurality And Proportional Representation In The Next Eleven Countries, Maggie Mcmahon Stehn Jan 2009

Comparing Single Member District Plurality And Proportional Representation In The Next Eleven Countries, Maggie Mcmahon Stehn

Honors Program Theses

Two of the most popular electoral systems in the world are proportional representation (PR) and single member district plurality (SMDP). While both are employed worldwide, it is unclear which is the most beneficial to constituents. The "Next Eleven" countries (NI I) as defined by Goldman Sachs are the countries of focus, which are predicted to be emerging countries in terms of growing population and percent increase in gross domestic product (GDP). Furthermore, there is a fairly even distribution of PR and SMDP systems among the NI I countries, as well as two single-party dominant countries. The following compares the two …

Impact Of A Proposed Federal Shield Law, Lisa Dahlke Jan 2009

Impact Of A Proposed Federal Shield Law, Lisa Dahlke

Honors Program Theses

This study will examine how current proposals for a federal shield law compare to protections offered by state legislatures and state courts. My research will address the effectiveness of current state-level protections for journalists' use of confidential sources using analysis of data from a national survey of news outlets. By determining how different aspects of state protections influence subpoena frequency and compliance, I attempt to evaluate the key aspects of legislation currently being considered in Congress, the Free Flow of Information Act of 2009. I find clear evidence that the presence of a statute and a number of its provisions …

Administration Oversight: An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The U.S. House Committee On Oversight And Government Reform During Recent Presidential Administrations, Chantel Witt

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this essay is to examine more specifically the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, one committee that holds some responsibility for monitoring executive branch abuses of power. The thesis that emerges from this study is that there are numerous internal and external factors causing this committee to fail in providing effective oversight. While this one congressional committee can not be held accountable for allowing executive branch abuses to occur, it is perhaps a place to begin assessing where the blame belongs.

The Unique Silencer, Christofer Ditscheit Jan 2009

The Unique Silencer, Christofer Ditscheit

Honors Program Theses

For decades people have been puzzled by the sudden drop in voter turnout that occurred in the 1970's and continued through the 1980's and 1990's. The demographics of those voting and not voting have been analyzed repeatedly for some clue as to why people were not turning out in the same numbers. Repeatedly, different factors have been addressed as contributors to the reduction of voter turnout. Studies have found that the United States has a unique factor contributing to the low voter turnout. Even after controlling for socioeconomic and institutional factors, there is something about the United States that has …

Algebra Rules Object Boxes As An Authentic Assessment Task Of Preservice Elementary Teacher Learning In A Mathematics Methods Course, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan Jan 2009

Algebra Rules Object Boxes As An Authentic Assessment Task Of Preservice Elementary Teacher Learning In A Mathematics Methods Course, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan

Open Educational Resources

The purpose of this study was to describe elementary preservice teachers’ difficulties with understanding algebraic generalizations that were set in an authentic context. Fifty-eight preservice teachers enrolled in an elementary mathematics methods course participated in the study. These students explored and practiced with authentic, hands-on materials called “object boxes,” then created sets of their own object box materials. Each algebra rules object box contained materials to illustrate and describe four different algebraic generalizations, or “rules.” The variables “n” and “z” were used in each of the generalizations. For each generalization, there was a set of objects attached to a piece …
