Preface: On The College Of Humanities Fine Arts Graduate Student Symposium, Samuel Lyndon Gladden Sep 2009

Preface: On The College Of Humanities Fine Arts Graduate Student Symposium, Samuel Lyndon Gladden

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In the fall of 2006, we sat down to discuss the possibility of creating a venue for the celebration of excellence in student work in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Although we initially considered large-scale models that would include both undergraduate and graduate students and that would make space for the presentation of traditional research, creative work, and performance, we soon realized the wisdom of “starting small” by focusing on graduate-level work representing traditional research in the humanities. From the beginning, the goal has remained the same: to provide space for the presentation of excellent work, nominated by …

Communication Dimensions Of Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict: Perceptions By Subordinates Of Sex/Gender Differences In Supervisors’ Conflict Strategies, Maria Del Pilar Montoya Sep 2009

Communication Dimensions Of Supervisor-Subordinate Conflict: Perceptions By Subordinates Of Sex/Gender Differences In Supervisors’ Conflict Strategies, Maria Del Pilar Montoya

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

My personal interest about conflict in the workplace and its relation with sex/gender started early in my first years as a communication practitioner, and later became a topic for my academic research. After I did not find satisfactory answers among the popular beliefs and perceptions to the inquiries about conflict in the workplace, I turned my search to what the social sciences have investigated. I have to recognize that at the beginning my internal explanations about the reasons why conflict with supervisors happened were biased on traumatic conflict experiences with female supervisors as a participant and an observer, in which …

Manipulating The Public Agenda: Why Acorn Was In The News, And What The News Got Wrong, Peter Dreier, Christopher R. Martin

Faculty Publications

This study, which received no outside funding from any organization, analyzed the complete 2007‐2008 coverage of ACORN by 15 major news media organizations, and the narrative frames of their 647 stories during that period. The news media analyzed include the four the highest circulation national newspapers—USA Today, New York Times, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal—and an analysis of the transcripts of reports from leading broadcast news organizations: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio (NPR), and NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (PBS). We also analyzed stories from three local newspapers …

Mentor's Introduction [To Maria Del Pilar Montoya's Paper], April Chatham-Carpenter Sep 2009

Mentor's Introduction [To Maria Del Pilar Montoya's Paper], April Chatham-Carpenter

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Pilar’s paper was initially developed in a graduate-level Quantitative Research Methods class. She surveyed nontraditional students at a university about their perceptions of sex/gender differences in female supervisor’s conflict strategies. The paper does a good job overviewing the literature in the field and applies an already recognized scale to explore male and female students’ perceptions of their female bosses. This work serves as a foundation for Pilar’s ongoing thesis project, looking at the role of sex and gender in supervisory conflict behaviors.

Mentor's Introduction [To Tanna White's Paper], April Chatham-Carpenter Sep 2009

Mentor's Introduction [To Tanna White's Paper], April Chatham-Carpenter

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Tanna’s paper does a good job investigating the socialization graduate students at UNI experience while going to graduate school. The findings in the paper could be used by university graduate programs to help improve life for graduate students at their schools. Her findings demonstrated a significant difference between graduate students and graduate teaching assistants in their identification with the university.

Mentor's Introduction [To Kyle G. Wilson's Paper], Pierre-Damien Mvuyekure

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Kyle Wilson developed “Mental Realities of the Multi-Culture: Multiple Othering in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart” in my Seminar in Literature: Post-Colonial Literatures and Theory in the fall of 2008. First, he presented it as part of the conference presentations in class. Everyone agreed that Kyle Wilson had developed something truly interesting: an original work of scholarship on Achebe’s most famous, most frequently taught novel. After the presentation, I encouraged Kyle, along with his classmates, to submit a conference proposal to the National Association of African American Studies and Affiliates. Kyle submitted his proposal and was invited to present the …

Mentor's Introduction [To Kaori Yamada's Paper], Catherine Palczewski Sep 2009

Mentor's Introduction [To Kaori Yamada's Paper], Catherine Palczewski

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Fall 2009 finds Kaori Yamada in her third semester of graduate study in the Department of Communication Studies and continuing her coursework for a Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies. She comes to UNI after completing her undergraduate degree in English at Dokkyo University in Soka, Japan. The selection of Ms. Yamada’s essay for presentation at the Spring 2009 CHFA Graduate Research Symposium is particularly impressive because it was written during her very first semester at UNI for the Gender Issues in Communication class. The essay also has been competitively selected for presentation at the 2009 National Communication Association …

Provost Colloquium On Interdisciplinarity, Jesse Swan Secretary

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Provost Gibson is facilitating a discussion of interdisciplinarity at UNI, responsive to reactions of colloquium participants. The exchanges have mostly been informal among participants, but there has been one gathering so far. UNIversitas is sponsoring the colloquy.

At the fall gathering of participants, Gibson started with what she values of faculty, the most abstract, intellectual, and creative mode of thought, and then she moved onto other modes, both to accommodate the feelings of participants and to guide participants into free and imaginative expression.

For the abstract, intellectual, and creative mode of thought, Gibson picked up on UNI President Allen’s …

An Interdisciplinary Consideration Of Marginality, Marybeth C. Stalp, Catherine Helen Palczewski Sep 2009

An Interdisciplinary Consideration Of Marginality, Marybeth C. Stalp, Catherine Helen Palczewski

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

As the university increases its commitment to interdisciplinary studies, it is imperative that we find productive models of interdisciplinarity in scholarly and creative activities, teaching, and institutional structures. This coauthored essay, written in the spirit of sharing work across disciplines, seeks to participate in the conversation about interdisciplinary scholarship.

Interdisciplinarity in scholarship can be discussed in two ways. First, interdisicplinarity can be enhanced by encouraging people to read across the disciplines. Second, it can be enhanced by encouraging scholarship that is interdisciplinary and multi-methodological. This essay speaks to both of these levels.

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Analysis Of County-Based Human West Nile Virus Incidence In The Continental United States, Ramanathan Sugumaran, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote Jul 2009

Spatio-Temporal Cluster Analysis Of County-Based Human West Nile Virus Incidence In The Continental United States, Ramanathan Sugumaran, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote

Faculty Work

Background: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne illness that can severely affect human health. After introduction on the East Coast in 1999, the virus quickly spread and became established across the continental United States. However, there have been significant variations in levels of human WNV incidence spatially and temporally. In order to quantify these variations, we used Kulldorff's spatial scan statistic and Anselin's Local Moran's I statistic to uncover spatial clustering of human WNV incidence at the county level in the continental United States from 2002– 2008. These two methods were applied with varying analysis thresholds in order …
