The Address Of The President - Science And The Future, E. J. Cable Jan 1934

The Address Of The President - Science And The Future, E. J. Cable

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We are truly living in a wonderful and fearful period so far as civilization is concerned. Our present social order has changed so rapidly within the last quarter of a century as to cause many writers and students of sociology to become somewhat alarmed as to its future stability. The concept of progress is one of the most profound and germinal ideas at work in our modern age.

An Analysis Of The Functional Timbre Variations Of The Violin, Arnold M. Small Jan 1934

An Analysis Of The Functional Timbre Variations Of The Violin, Arnold M. Small

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The research which has been previously directed toward the analysis of the timbre of the violin has not, to the best of my knowledge, ever objectively considered the dynamic character of the violin tone. A complete description of the timbre of the violin can never be attained until, in addition to the extant method of clang analysis, qualitative and quantitative statements are forthcoming regarding the timbre variations which are functionally based upon the tone-production factors inherent in violin playing. These factors to which I refer are essentially: (1) bow direction; (2) point at which string is activated; (3) method of …

Measurement Of Aesthetic Interests, Alvhh R. Lauer Jan 1934

Measurement Of Aesthetic Interests, Alvhh R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Allport and Vernon have considered Spranger's classification of human interests as a basis for categories in the field of social psychology. The problems of the relative importance of heredity and environment have not been satisfactorily settled using any similar basis of classification. Strong's theory of interest measurement is based primarily upon the affective supremacy in the reaction tendency systems or habit patterns. The affective and volitional elements are placed above the cognition or meaning elements.

A Criterion Of Driving Ability, Earl L. Allgaier Jan 1934

A Criterion Of Driving Ability, Earl L. Allgaier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the field of highway safety considerable work has been done to develop various tests of driving ability. In this development two major problems present themselves. First, the test itself must be perfected so as to be reliable, that is, the test must give the same result when repeated. Second, the validity of the test must be determined by comparing the results of the test with actual performance. To do this a criterion of driving ability must be established. Rating of drivers from general observation does not yield satisfactory results. As an instance of this the correlation between accidents per …

The Relative Importance Of Intensity And Time Stress In Singing, Harold Seashore Jan 1934

The Relative Importance Of Intensity And Time Stress In Singing, Harold Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The factors that enter into the production and perception of rhythm in singing are so varied and complex that they almost defy clarification. In discussing rhythm of the singer, musicians have confined themselves almost entirely to one general term: stress, with its loose synonyms, accent and emphasis. These terms are not well-defined, although generally the context implies that stress, accent, and emphasis mean an increase in dynamics, a "push" in intensity. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to clarify the nature of vocal rhythm by discussing some studies of two major factors that are involved: time stress …

A New Departure In Mental Measurements, D. D. Feder Jan 1934

A New Departure In Mental Measurements, D. D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the 1933 meeting of this group we presented a brief discussion of a proposed new departure in the field of mental measurements. At that time we pointed out the rather widespread dissatisfaction with current types of mental and educational tests. The first criticism was based upon the lack of agreement of test theory with the best psychological knowledge. Another criticism dealt with the fact that tests (especially educational tests) tended to emphasize the measurement of mere possession of knowledge rather than the functional significance of such knowledge. Finally, it was noted that the primary concern of the psychologist in …

Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly Jan 1933

Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A special phonophotographic camera makes possible the photographing of nasal resonance together with a time line. On the basis of these photographs, it is shown that each vowel has a specific nasal element in its resonance, the duration of which varies directly with the closeness of the vowel. It is shown further that the duration of nasal resonance in vowels phonated by individuals with badly nasal voices is greater than in vowels phonated by those having superior voices.

The Knowledge And Attitudes Possessed By Parents Of Elementary School Children, Lois Ackerley Jan 1933

The Knowledge And Attitudes Possessed By Parents Of Elementary School Children, Lois Ackerley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study applies a method of determining the content of a curriculum for a group composed of mothers and fathers of elementary school children. The needs of the group are determined by a comparison of what specially selected judges consider important in the care and the guidance of children, and the knowledge and attitudes possessed by the parents.

Factors Which Influence Visibility In Daylight And Under Artificial Illumination, Alvhh R. Lauer Jan 1933

Factors Which Influence Visibility In Daylight And Under Artificial Illumination, Alvhh R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study is part of an investigation sponsored by the National Research Council to ascertain the optimal colors; back-ground-legend combinations; and spacings of letters, numbers, or words of stimuli used in directing and controlling automotive traffic. One hundred and twenty-three license plates of the states and territories were subjected to analysis for ascertaining the factors involved. Later the colors of the plates were analyzed by a Razek-Mülder color analyzer for wave length as well as reflection factor of the colors.

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker Jan 1933

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Simultaneous binocular records of the vertical and horizontal eye-movements were obtained by photographic technique for fifty students ranking in the top decile in the Iowa Silent Reading Test and the University of Iowa Qualifying Examination. Norms of seven measures of eye-movements were established on reading material moderate in difficulty and requirement of comprehension. Varying difficulties of reading material and requirements of comprehension gave significant differences in eye-movements for duration of fixation, size of fixation, and rate of reading; mode of duration and extent of forward shift remained fairly constant.

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry Jan 1933

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In investigating the mental processes involved in geometry problem solving the present study attempted to eliminate some of the inadequacies of paper and pencil analyses by the following procedure: 1. The stimuli were arranged according to increasing degrees of elaboration and presented to subjects, individually, through an exposure apparatus for a timed interval. 2. The subject expressed his ideas verbally, as they occurred, and these were recorded by a microphone-dictaphone unit. 3. The meanings of the responses were ascertained by cross reference and by use of a controlled set of questions. The data obtained throw light on the status of …

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder Jan 1933

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The field of mental measurements has been dominated by a theory sterile in its contributions to systematized psychology. Moreover, most traditional types of objective examinations do not adequately test anything more than amount of discrete information compiled. This technique goes beyond mere information, getting into the subtler intricacies of human thought and the functional aspects of intelligence. A definite theoretical psychological basis underlies this approach, and it is believed that important contributions to general theory can result from this type of experimentation. Future use in the individualization of instruction at the rate and level of the student's ability is described.

The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann Jan 1933

The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Descriptions of the objectives of education have varied from general, all-inclusive statements, to extended lists of details. The inadequacy of general statements has been recognized by curriculum makers and several attempts have been made to develop more detailed classifications. The best-known classifications have used a mixture of general and specific abilities, or of general and specific activities.

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild Jan 1933

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sound waves from the instruments of the orchestra were phonophotographed, and by means of the Henrici Harmonic Analyzer the tone quality of each instrument was determined. Three notes covering the range of their registers, were taken of the wind instruments. An intensive series was taken from the string instruments to determine some of the differences in quality due to use of the mute, varied pressure in bowing, differences in fingering, and differences in structure of the instrument.

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore Jan 1933

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pattern score, developed in the psychology of music to express the facts pertinent to both music and psychology, is here demonstrated in its more complete form. There is presented a sample of a song graphed on the pattern score which coordinately records the melody curve, the intensity curve, sample timbre analysis, durational aspects, facts from the musical score and phonetic elements. In its standardized form the pattern score fulfills the requirement that the basic musical and scientific concepts must be presented visually in adequately coordinated relationships.
