A Preliminary Investigation Of The Relationship Between Gsr, Heart Rate Change And Eyelid Conditioning, W. N. Runquist, L. E. Ross Jan 1958

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Relationship Between Gsr, Heart Rate Change And Eyelid Conditioning, W. N. Runquist, L. E. Ross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies of classical defense conditioning at the Iowa laboratory have been concerned largely with the relation of drive level (D) to level of performance in conditioning. According to the theoretical formulation offered of the results of these studies, the associative factor, H, and drive factor, D, combine multiplicatively to determine reaction potential, E, which in turn determines the strength of the response, i.e., R = f (E) = f(H) X f(D). It has further been assumed that D is a function of (a) the intensity of the UCS, and (b) the score on the Manifest Anxiety (A) scale (8). …

Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson Jan 1958

Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study by Pavlov (5, p. 30) indicated that normally painful stimuli applied while hungry dogs were feeding produced less overall avoidance behavior than at times when they were not feeding. In a still earlier study, Jones (3) reported that extinction of avoidance to a feared stimulus was hastened by gradually introducing the stimulus while the child subject was eating. More recently, Farber (1) has presented evidence that feeding in the presence of anxiety-producing cues hastened later extinction to those cues as compared to control animals which did not receive the feeding experience. In Miller's words (4): "Eating and …

The Self-Identified Problems Of College Students, John A. Bath Jan 1958

The Self-Identified Problems Of College Students, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Analyses of college students' problems have been made from time to time for various purposes. One of the primary motives seems to have been to use such information to improve counseling services. Both Carr (1) and Stone (4) used the Mooney Problem Check List as the source of information about student problems at the college level. Carr compared the problems of 300 superior college students with 300 inferior students. Although superior students had fewer problems, they had an equivalent number in seven of the eleven problem areas when compared with the inferior students. Superior students were more concerned with long-range …

A Survey Of The Educational And Personal Characteristics Required For Initial Employment Of Accountants In A Selected Group Of Iowa Industries, Leonard Eugene Bennett

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the most dynamic characteristics of today's society is found in its complex and everchanging economic structure. These characteristics have been enhanced by such elements as the growth of corporate enterprise, greater governmental regulations of business, and increased demands by consumers for more business services. With the increase of these complexities, the need for accurate and readily understood records is great. Therefore, the need for specialists who can understand, prepare, and interpret these records becomes more and more important. It is the function of financial accounting to give expression to these records and to make the activities of a …

Critical Thinking Development Among Physical Science Students, Philip J. Lorenz Jan 1958

Critical Thinking Development Among Physical Science Students, Philip J. Lorenz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The physical science course for nonscience students has the following objectives: subject matter achievement, an understanding of the methods and philosophy of science, and the development of critical thinking ability. Also, courses of this type offer unparalleled opportunities as a public relations medium between the world of science and the educated layman. It was found that most college freshmen enrolling in the physical science course had little academic experience in the solution of problems requiring critical thinking. However, they were usually quite proficient in work depending mainly upon memorization and seemed to expect questions requiring only this ability. At the …

A Preliminary Study On Foreign Personnel Selection, Herbert Paul Froehlich Jan 1958

A Preliminary Study On Foreign Personnel Selection, Herbert Paul Froehlich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem is not the usual one of trying to predict behavior relevant to an individual's daily activities, but that of predicting how an individual will behave in and adapt to an environment in which he has never found himself, or ever thought he would find himself. Involved in such prediction is the question of whether the individual will behave as predicted once he comes in contact with the new environment. This may be the situation facing a company wanting to locate abroad, hiring native employees together with some Americans. The expense of training, ill-will, loss of production, etc., created …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For many years writers in the field of education have encouraged home visits by classroom teachers. A search of the available literature revealed no research showing how much visiting is being done. No experimental evidence was found which would support the conclusion that home visits are of real educational value.

A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson Jan 1958

A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Communication between the school and the community has been a problem to educators and patrons of school districts for some time. In the early years of our country, the school was the center of the community and nothing happened in the school that the people in the area did not know. As the urbanization of our country began to take place, the school gradually lost its top spot on the conversational list of the people within the school district. Only within the smallest communities did communication of school and community not suffer. Most of this communication was of the personal …

A Follow-Up Study Of Fifty Selected Individuals Who Terminated Their Formal Education In The Special Education Department Of The Waterloo, Iowa, Public Schools, Alwilda N. Howell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In a democratic society, an educated child may be considered as a natural resource of the nation. Education in the United States is based on the democratic philosophy that all children are entitled, whenever possible, to an education commensurate with their abilities, and that they have the right to experiences and opportunities that are considered normal for all children. In discussing what education in a democracy entailed, Alice Channing of the Children's Bureau wrote, "Democratic education means, not that the same education must be available to all children, but rather that all children have the right to be educated or …

Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English Jan 1958

Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Three years ago, when the writer first entered the Cedar Falls Junior High School as a classroom teacher, students who did not conform to school regulations were assigned to detention during the period following the regular school day. The policy was to assign each teacher to one week of detention duty on a rotating basis as part of the teaching load. It was apparent that the teachers considered the detention assign.ment among the least desirable of their duties. The primary objective of detention was to make the experience disagreeable enough that the students would conform to school regulations and remain …

Vocabulary And Achievement In Developmental Psychology, Don C. Charles, John A. Bath Jan 1958

Vocabulary And Achievement In Developmental Psychology, Don C. Charles, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between achievement in an introductory course in developmental psychology and knowledge of word-meanings in that area. It is a preliminary study, to be expanded as additional data are collected. Several studies exist which show a significant relationship between general vocabulary and college grade-point average, usually the first term average. The studies of Bernard (1), Bolton (2), and Templeman (4) are typical. Levine (3) developed a psychological vocabulary test in analogy form at the University of Minnesota which is used for both selection and evaluation in graduate and undergraduate psychology classes …

Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson Jan 1958

Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although many species of fishes normally congregate in schools, the majority of these fishes will successfully survive in an individual existence. However, the question has been raised as to what extent the operant behavior of schooling fishes remains unchanged when they are isolated from the group. Experiments by Welty (1934) have indicated that goldfish learn mazes more rapidly when grouped than when isolated. Further, he found that motor responses are retained by a group better than by an individual. Breder and Halpern (1946) point out that fishes will sometimes not feed until they see a companion feeding. In order …

Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek Jan 1958

Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine whether high motivational level facilitates performance on an easy motor task and impairs performance on a difficult one. The problem is suggested by the theoretical formulations of Hull (4) and Spence (12) and the experiments done within this framework. The theory states that a response tendency is some multiplicative combination of associative and motivational factors. The most obvious consequence of this formulation is that as motivational level increases, performance will increase. But this applies only to the simplest situations, in which there is but one response tendency to be augmented by increased …

Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough Jan 1958

Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various measures of severity of stuttering are available and are used both clinically and experimentally. Information concerning the relationships among these various measures thus should be useful in planning effective therapy or in designing experiments. In a previous study Sherman and Trotter (4) evaluated the relationship between two measures of the severity of stuttering. One measure was the mean scale value of severity of individual moments of stuttering derived from listeners' responses; the other measure was frequency of stuttering. Measures were taken on tape-recorded readings of a 500-word passage. The obtained estimate of the strength of relationship was a Pearson …
