Clinical Teaching: Some Experimental Observations, Ralph Scott

A study attempted to measure some effects of a 2-week postbaccalaureate workshop on clinical teaching (teaching which provides children with individualized materials and procedures) and to assess administrative encouragement and appreciation of clinical experimentation and innovation. An experimental group of 20 experienced elementary teachers who had participated in the summer workshop and a control group of 49 who had enrolled too late for admission were invited to participate in a clinical teaching experiment. The Relationship Between Age And Response Speed With Random Letter Stereograms, Joseph Geffen

The relationships between age and performance for responses to random letter stereograms were examined on three measures: response speed (RS), depth judgment (DJ) and number of errors in locating a figure. These relationships were studied as a function of two stimulus properties: matrix density (MD), defined in terms of percent of letter saturation; and column shift (SC), defined in terms of number of columns of horizontal displacement of the figure. The results supported a prediction of age differences in performance with the RS and the error data: a consistent trend was observed in which the performance of Ss in the …

Wallace And Carver Science Halls, Clifford L. Meints

The old science building, in which George Washington Carver studied while at Simpson College, was remodeled in 1967, dedicated the Henry A. Wallace Hall of Science, and now houses the Departments of Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Psychology as well as providing general lecture and recitation rooms. The newer Carver Science Hall was remodeled in 1968 and houses general classroom space along with the expanded Biology and Chemistry Departments. Specific aspects of the remodeling are described, and some sidelights of the building's history are mentioned. Two other honors concerning George Washington Carver at Simpson College are mentioned.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the performance of grade XI students of Saskatchewan (Canada) and Iowa (U. S. A.) on two of the Iowa Tests of Educational Development: Test 3, Correctness and Appropriateness of Expression; and Test 4, Ability to Do Quantitative Thinking. The interpretation of the performances involved examination of several related educational factors.

The sample comprising 543 grade XI students was drawn from twelve selected Saskatchewan high schools.

The elementary school counselor; a newly-emerged member of the pupil personnel term; is a specialist whose skills are directed toward helping children develop in a healthy; normal way. His skills should allow him to understand the concerns children have; the meanings and goals of their behavior; and the psychological systems which affect their lives. His training should aid him in communicating his acceptance and his interest in each child. Academic preparation should include specialized courses in counseling and in psychology. It was the purpose of this investigation (1) to determine the relative value of the Algebra I grade, the Iowa Tests of Educational Development quantitative thinking score, and the Iowa Tests of Educacational [sic] Development composite score in predicting the geometry grade, and (2) to present the findings, using two predictor variables, that would provide the best possible estimate of success in geometry. The study involved 219 students in seven schools in Linn County, Iowa, who were enrolled in geometry in 1966-67. Learning Of Random Shapes And Two Unique Sets Of Concrete Nouns, Don Lewis, William O. Phinney, Maryhelen H. Posey, Karen S. Horr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In paired-associates learning, ten random shapes were used as stimuli and two sets of concrete nouns as responses. One set of nouns was high in descriptive appropriateness, da, the other set low. Two different groups learned the two combinations. Later, two additional groups learned with the pairings scrambled. Still later, a replication was made. The replication yielded results which, in most ways, were basically like those obtained originally; but there was an important exception that was related to the learning of the scrambled pairs for nouns of low da value.

The purpose of this study was to develop a set of evaluative criteria to be used in the analysis of student teaching programs. The approach to the study of the problem was to survey the literature of the field by known experts to determine their thinking on what is a good student teaching program. From this authoritative source, a set of evaluative criteria in the form of a checklist was developed.
