More Light On The Origin Of The Missouri River Loess, J. E. Todd Jan 1906

More Light On The Origin Of The Missouri River Loess, J. E. Todd

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

My excuse for offering another paper on this well-worn subject is my recently acquired familiarity with a deposit of Lake Dakota, which closely resembles loess, in structure and composition, and in its relations to underlying till and to recent channels. In short it seems to be a more recent and less extensive formation of the same sort. The resemblances are so striking and its fluvio-lacustrine origin so unquestioned that a similar origin for the loess of the Missouri is strongly suggested.

Cohesion Of Water And Of Alcohol, Edwin Morrison Jan 1904

Cohesion Of Water And Of Alcohol, Edwin Morrison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the meeting of the Iowa Academy of Sciences in 1904 I read a paper descriptive of a new arrangement of a cohesion of water apparatus adapted to elementary laboratory work. The ease of manipulation, and close agreement of results in ordinary laboratory work led me to the thought of testing the accuracy of the standards of cohesion of water as ordinarily given in text-books and manuals. To my surprise, after a careful search through a number of the best text-books, manuals and works containing physical tables and constants, I found but one result tabulated, that of Gay-Lussac. There may …

Municipal Hygiene - Part I, C. O. Bates

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Allow me to say, by way of introduction, that it is proposed to make this the first of a series of papers on this subject, and for this reason its treatment, at this time, is from a general standpoint rather than a specific.

An Ecological Study Of The Sabine And Neches Valleys, Texas, James E. Gow Jan 1904

An Ecological Study Of The Sabine And Neches Valleys, Texas, James E. Gow

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the winter of 1902-3, and again during the winter of 1903-4, the writer was one of a party sent by the United States Bureau of Forestry to take stem analysis and valuation surveys on the holdings of the Kirby Lumber Company preparatory to making a working plan for the use of the company in the future treatment of its timber lands. The holdings of this company lie in Hardin, Orange, Newton, Jasper, Angelina, Sabine and San Augustine counties, and include the largest continuous area of virgin Longleaf pine existing in the United States at the present time. Incidentally to …

The Animal Cell In The Light Of Recent Work, Gilbert L. Houser Jan 1903

The Animal Cell In The Light Of Recent Work, Gilbert L. Houser

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With the discovery of the centrosome, microscopical work on the animal cell apparently reached its culmination. It was predicted that further study would yield little more than the details of larger facts already known. The last few years have marked the addition of just such details in even greater measure than was imagined; but it is also true that altogether unexpected contributions have been made from work along other than classic microscopical lines. Especially to be mentioned are: (1) the application to the cell of the data and the methods of physical chemistry; and (2) the extension of experimental biology …

Periodical Literature In Iowa On The Subject Of Chemistry, W. S. Hendrixson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The following is a list of the chemical periodicals in the State of Iowa, with the extent of the files and the names of the libraries in which they may be found. The list is prepared and published for the information of chemists who may have occasion to refer to such periodicals in their work. So far as known the books of any file may be used for reference purposes in the libraries which contain them and under certain restrictions, in some cases, they may be taken out for purposes of reference. In some cases the books are in the …

The Importance Of Vital Statistics In The Study Of Social Science, Gershom H. Hill Jan 1903

The Importance Of Vital Statistics In The Study Of Social Science, Gershom H. Hill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Social science is now studied in all colleges and universities. Professors who have qualified themselves by years of post-graduate work both at home and abroad show pupils how to study history in a topical manner. Statistics, ancient and modern, are compared. Large and well stocked libraries are in demand. Public documents, reports of State institutions, both charitable and penal, are examined. The data desired are compiled and used. Inter-society and inter-collegiate debates, upon popular questions, are frequently held. The most learned men available are asked to be present and serve as judges. In the study of science, theories are admissible …

New Method Of Cohesion Of Water And Adhesion Of Mercury Apparatus, Edwin Morrison Jan 1903

New Method Of Cohesion Of Water And Adhesion Of Mercury Apparatus, Edwin Morrison

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The difficulty of manipulating the ordinary apparatus in finding the cohesion of water and other liquids has thrown this beautiful and instructive laboratory experiment out of the reach of most students of Physics. Professor Nichols of Cornell University, says of this experiment: "The difficulties of controlling the conditions are so great, that the determination is one not to be recommended to the beginner." The first difficulty has been to accurately adjust the glass plate used in the experiment so that it will be parallel to the surface of the liquid to be tested; next, on account of the tension applied …

A Convenient Voltaic Cell, L. Begeman Jan 1903

A Convenient Voltaic Cell, L. Begeman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

I wish to discuss briefly a convenient form of the Lalande class of voltaic cells for which the government has recently allowed me a patent. While the cell possesses nothing startling in its newness, it yet has those advantages which make it better, I think, than any other for the purpose for which it was devised.
