Health Education, Belva L. Swalwell Feb 1929

Health Education, Belva L. Swalwell

Science Bulletin

Health work is so fundamental and so important that it cannot be left out of the high school course without seriously handicapping the individual, the state, and the nation. The recent state Iaws regarding health education place it, in effect, on a basis with other subjects. In other words, health education becomes one of the five major subjects running through the entire curriculum.

Laboratory Work In Poultry, H. Earl Rath Feb 1929

Laboratory Work In Poultry, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

It is probable that the winter feeding, housing and management problems of poultry have been taken up in class before this time. If not, the alert agricultural instructor can develop some very practical laboratory work by conducting a survey in the community of the conditions under which poultry is kept, and then comparing the results obtained from flocks cared for under varying conditions.

Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman Feb 1929

Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

An account of the experiment reached Paris the next year and came to the notice of Pascal. He could not try the experiment until 1646 when glass tubes were available to him. Pascal reasoned that if the atmosphere supported the mercury column, the height of the column should be lessened when the apparatus was carried to a high altitude.

Simple Experiments To Show Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman Jan 1929

Simple Experiments To Show Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

The teacher of general science in a small high school often lacks complete laboratory equipment, yet many experiments can be conducted, with simple, inexpensive, and readily available material. For the demonstration of atmospheric pressure, try the following experiments.

The Teaching Of Physiography, E. J. Cable Jan 1929

The Teaching Of Physiography, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

It is quite unfortunate that a subject as valuable as physiography finds such a small patronage among our high school pupils. This is probably due partly to the fact that there is still a lack of agreement among teachers as to the content or classification of the subject. In some high schools physiography is required of all freshmen. Often it goes under the title of "general science" or "modern geography."

Cockroaches For Laboratory Study, Roy L. Abbott Jan 1929

Cockroaches For Laboratory Study, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Teachers of high school biology are often handicapped by a lack of living material. This is particularly true in the teaching of insects. Most texts in biology use the grasshopper as a type of insect, largely, I suppose, because of its familiarity to the average pupil.

Winter Study Of Trees, O. R. Clark Jan 1929

Winter Study Of Trees, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

One often hears the idea expressed that there is little to be done during the winter months in the way of field or laboratory studies of trees. In reality there is a wealth of material available and the following suggestions are offered in the hope that they will be helpful in calling attention to the possibilities of winter tree study.

Hydrostatics, L. Begeman Jan 1929

Hydrostatics, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

The classroom apparatus necessary for an effective, interesting presentation of hydrostatics includes: pressure tubes, manometer tubes, pressure syringe, Pascal's vases and equilibrium tubes. All of these are listed in the apparatus catalogs found in every high school.

Laboratory Upkeep, R. W. Getchell Jan 1929

Laboratory Upkeep, R. W. Getchell

Science Bulletin

The article last month dealt with reagent bottles. Another problem is met in the proper care of iron ware - the special target of the corrosive laboratory fumes. To supply the pupil with rusty, oxide encrusted metal equipment is to encourage careless, slovenly work. An annual "paint day" is essential.

Science Bulletin

We enjoyed a visit the other day with the representative of a company which supplies files for government publications. This reminds us of how essential to good teaching is supplementary material. It both instructs and offers variety. Too often, in the mind of the pupil, the words schoolroom and monotony are synonyms.

An Experiment In Hydrostatics, L. Begeman Jan 1929

An Experiment In Hydrostatics, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Individual laboratory work in hydrostatics is not very essential if the teacher is properly equipped for classroom demonstration. However, it would be interesting and profitable in communities where gas is sup- plied to the laboratory, to have the student measure the gas pressure by means of a water column.

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Color Of Meats, A. A. Benedict Jan 1929

A Spectrophotometric Study Of The Color Of Meats, A. A. Benedict

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rapid change in the color of meat when exposed to the air has made it very difficult to make accurate comparisons of the colors of different samples. During this investigation it was found that this change could be prevented by placing the sample of meat between glass plates immediately after cutting. A comparison of the intensity of the light diffusely reflected from various cuts of meat was made by means of a spectrophotometer in the spectral region between 500 mμ and 700 mμ.

Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman Jan 1929

Atmospheric Pressure, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Having learned the meaning of "pressure" from the study of hydrostatics, the pupil is easily led to understand the striking phenomena of atmospheric pressure. He should readily appreciate that the term refers to the gravity pressure of the atmosphere.

Electrical Properties Of Corn-Stalk Products, A. A. Aardal Jan 1929

Electrical Properties Of Corn-Stalk Products, A. A. Aardal

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Chemical Engineering Department of Iowa State College is doing extensive research work in the utilization of waste products and especially of products made up from corn-stalk. One of these products is maizolith, which resembles hard rubber in many respects. This investigation deals particularly with the following electrical properties of maizolith; di-electric constant, power factor, specific resistivity and surface resistivity.

An Investigation Of The Critical Potentials Of The Spark Spectrum Of Cadmium, Dever Colson Jan 1929

An Investigation Of The Critical Potentials Of The Spark Spectrum Of Cadmium, Dever Colson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The direct spectroscopic method was used in which the spectrum was excited by electron impact. The accelerating voltage on the electrons was varied 8.8 (ionization potential of Cd) up to 200 volts. Measurements on the films were made with a microphotometer. The effects of change of plate current and vapor pressure were investigated.

Magnetic Properties Of Thin Cobalt Films Electrolytically Deposited, E. P. T. Tyndall, W. W. Wertzbaugher Jan 1929

Magnetic Properties Of Thin Cobalt Films Electrolytically Deposited, E. P. T. Tyndall, W. W. Wertzbaugher

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Initial magnetization curves and hysteresis loops of cobalt films from 40 to 100 millimicrons thick show the same general characteristics as iron films of the same range of thickness. The specific properties, however, are largely dependent on the acidity of the electrolyte. The linear relation between thickness and reciprocal of coercive force discovered for iron films is not in general true for cobalt, though it is approximated in some series of films.

A Parallel Carbon Arc For Direct Current, L. B. Spinney Jan 1929

A Parallel Carbon Arc For Direct Current, L. B. Spinney

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An arc between carbons of equal diameter placed parallel to each other and spaced a small distance apart operates automatically on alternating current and the carbons burn down equally. When supplied with direct current the positive carbon is consumed at a rate approximately twice as great as that of the negative. Therefore to operate the ordinary parallel carbon arc on direct current some provision must be made to move the positive carbon forward, or a larger carbon must be used on the positive side of the circuit.

A Synthetic Tone-Mixer, Joseph Tiffin Jan 1929

A Synthetic Tone-Mixer, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A device designed to demonstrate the phenomenon of "tone-mixing" will be exhibited and described. By means of this apparatus a vibrato may be synthetically produced with the number of pulses per second, extent of frequency fluctuation, and intensity relationship under control. The manner in which each of these variables influences the perceived tone can thus be determined. It is also possible to reproduce a vibrato whose rate, extent, and intensity relationship are identical with those of artistic singing. One factor at a time can then be varied and the relative importance of the several elements in the artistic tone determined. …

A Comparison In Academic Achievement Of The Student In The Upper Quartile With Those In The Lower Quartile As Measured By Aptitude Tests, J. E. Evans

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Of the 464 freshmen included in this study fifty-five were in the lower quartile and 109 in the upper. The tests used for the study were the I. S. C. Aptitude Test and the Engineering Information Test. The fifty-five students in the lower quartile made 196 failures during the first three terms, while the 109 students made 169 failures in the same time.

Thomson Effect In Single Crystal Zinc, L. A. Ware Jan 1929

Thomson Effect In Single Crystal Zinc, L. A. Ware

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Results for a series of crystals made from Kahlbaum zinc are much more consistent than any previously reported by the writer. The Voigt-Thomson symmetry relation appears to be satisfied for the Thomson Effect. The specific resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance have also been measured for all the crystals.

Variations In Soil Reaction Affect Nitrification, P. E. Brown, G. V. C. Houghland Jan 1929

Variations In Soil Reaction Affect Nitrification, P. E. Brown, G. V. C. Houghland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In some of the earliest studies on nitrification, it was found that the reaction of the soil exerted a profound influence on the occurrence of the process. In strongly acid soils, frequently no nitrate formation took place, and as the acidity increased, the process proceeded more and more slowly. It was further noted that additions of lime to acid soils would stimulate the action of the nitrifying bacteria and a greater production of nitrates would occur.
