Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman Mar 1930

Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Newton's second law of motion states the relation between force and momentum. From this law we learn how to measure a force in terms of the momentum it creates in a unit of time or a second.

Winter Birds Of Iowa, O. R. Clark Mar 1930

Winter Birds Of Iowa, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

The study of birds should certainly form an important unit of every course in high school biology. Furthermore, this study should be continued through the entire school year in order to secure the most desirable results. The fall is an excellent time to begin the study because the number of birds to be found is not so great as to ca use confusion and the students will be able to become familiar with the means of identification and the common recognition marks of many of our common birds.

Misleading Terms, Alison Aitchison, Marguerite Uttley

Science Bulletin

"Tradition is the enemy of progress." Dr. Julius Klein, Assistant Secretary of Commerce, advises young people to adopt this as their slogan if they wish to make for themselves successful pl aces in the business world. To train these embryo business men and women is the business of the public schools. Geography contributes to training for commerce more than any other science. Have geography teachers adopted the same slogan?

Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman Feb 1930

Newton's Laws Of Motion, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

In the study of Newton's Laws of Motion, it is more important to understand the concepts they embody than to be able to repeat them verbatim. Too frequently, in the teaching of high school physics, memory work is allowed to take the place of concrete information. This is particularly true with reference to these basic mechanical concepts of the physical universe known as Newton's Laws of Motion.

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath Feb 1930

Health And Cleanliness, H. Earl Rath

Science Bulletin

A short time ago there was presented in the columns of this paper an article dealing with the methods of motivating a health program. This article dealt with the methods of gaining an interest in the subject of health. Once having gained this interest a program of education must be brought forward. Such a program may not be elaborate, in fact probably should not be. It is the opinion of the writer that most programs of health attempt to cover too wide a field and do not leave sufficient definite impressions.

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott Jan 1930

Household Insects, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

It was said above (see November Bulletin) that practically every animal is attacked by one or more kinds of insects. Man constitutes no exception to this statement, and it is my purpose in this article to deal with a few of the insects commonly found in or around our homes. Perhaps the most familiar of all household insects is the housefly.

The Change Of Phase On Reflection Of Light From The Silvered Interfaces Of An Etalon, E. Hobart Collins Jan 1930

The Change Of Phase On Reflection Of Light From The Silvered Interfaces Of An Etalon, E. Hobart Collins

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In making wavelength determinations to the accuracy of one-thousandth of an Angstrom with a Fabry and Perot Etalon it is necessary to know the wavelength of the line to one-tenth of an Angstrom, the thickness of the etalon and the change of phase on reflection of the light from the interfaces of the etalon. This change of phase is a function of the wavelength, varies with the metal, the way it is deposited and with the surface upon which it is deposited. A separate determination must be made for each etalon. This change of phase is usually expressed as a …

The Iowa Piano Camera: Some Preliminary Findings, Laila Skinner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Objective analysis of the voice and many musical instruments can be made by simply photographing the sound wave and measuring time, intensity and timbre from the records. Piano performances cannot be studied in this way because of complexities produced in the sound waves when notes are played simultaneously.

Motion, L. Begeman Jan 1930

Motion, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Motion is a general property of matter. There is no rest in the absolute sense. An object at rest with reference to the earth 's surface is in rapid motion with reference to the earth's axis of rotation just as a person may be at rest in a Pullman car and at the same time be in rapid motion with reference to the ground. All divisions of matter, - masses, molecules, atoms, protons, and electrons are moving relatively all of the time.

Astronomy, E. J. Cable Jan 1930

Astronomy, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

In the field of general science, astronomy offers projects for practical as well as very useful knowledge. One of the greatest values is its appeal to the intellect. Astronomy attempts to unravel the secrets of nature, not only on our planet, but also in the vastness of space around us that is within reach of man's powerful instruments. It acquaints man with what is going on around him as well as with what is happening in regions far removed from everyday experiences and personal contacts. Astronomy tries to make man feel "comfortable" and at "home" in his universe.
