The Color And Intensity Of The Chemiluminescence Of Solid Sodium, R. M. Bowie Jan 1931

The Color And Intensity Of The Chemiluminescence Of Solid Sodium, R. M. Bowie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fact that solid sodium reacts with the moisture in the air to produce a faint glow has been known for years. The color of the light was said to be greenish and its intensity extremely low; however, no measurements had been made. In this article, a method is described for determining its intensity by means of a photoelectric cell. The determination of the spectrum of the light as obtained both by filters and spectrographically is described. The intensity was found to vary from 3.57 to 10.5 x 10-7 lumens per square inch of metal surface while the spectrum …

Can The Ayres Spelling Scale Be Relied On For Measuring The Individual Class Achievement?, E. C. Denny

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Twenty words were selected at random from column Q of the Ayres Spelling Scale. These words were given as a dictated spelling test to 29 pupils in the 5th grade of the I. S. T. C. Training School. The papers were scored and it was also determined how many times each word was missed. The ten easiest words were then considered as one test and the ten most difficult words as a second test.

Progress In The Analysis Of Cosmic-Ray Observations (Ii), Le Roy D. Weld

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One year ago the writer reported to this Academy the results of some preliminary calculations of the intensities of the three components assumed by Millikan to compose the cosmic radiation, based upon his last published data.1 At that time the Academy was so kind as to set apart a grant for a continuance of this research. Soon afterward, Dr. Millikan informed me that he was engaged upon a more elaborate series of depth-ionization measurements which promised greater precision, and extended the hope that the results would be available by fall. It was, however, not until February that the new data …

Phosphorescence In A Photoelectric Cell Of Fused Quartz, George V. Emery Jan 1931

Phosphorescence In A Photoelectric Cell Of Fused Quartz, George V. Emery

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While using a quartz spectrograph and a fused quartz photoelectric cell, a large leak was observed immediately after shutting off the exciting light. This was apparently due to a phosphorescence of the fused quartz. Only a few seconds exposure sufficed to give the saturation value. The current decreased according to the regular law of decay of phosphorescence reaching zero in about one minute.

Some Recent Improvements In The Galvanic Techniques, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Our latest experimental results verify some previous tentative conclusions that mental and physical fatigue cause an increase in O's resistance which is fairly uniform but presents still some anomalous cases. Blood pressure almost uniformly increases. We have also perfected the device which photographs the deflections obtained from the Hathaway apparatus.

Radio And The Outer Atmosphere Jan 1931

Radio And The Outer Atmosphere

Science Bulletin

In investigating the possibilities of short-wave radio the surprising fact was discovered that although short waves may often be clearly received at distances of thousands of miles from stations with very little power, it is difficult or impossible to detect them at nearby points, 30 to 300 miles away. This can be understood if the upper atmosphere acts like a reflector.

About Atmospheric Electricity, L. Begeman Jan 1931

About Atmospheric Electricity, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

Our atmosphere is electrified at all times. During the summer the average increase of potential from the earth's surface up is about 100 volts for one meter of ascent. This potential gradient, however, diminishes with increasing altitude until at the height of one mile it is only 25 volts per meter. During the winter the atmosphere is much more in tensely electrified. The average increase of electrical potential near the earth 's surface during this season is as much as 250 volts per meter of ascent.

Resistivity Of Zinc Crystals, E. P. T. Tyndall, A. G. Hoyem Jan 1931

Resistivity Of Zinc Crystals, E. P. T. Tyndall, A. G. Hoyem

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The resistivity at 20°C of zinc crystals made of Kahlbaum's purest and of "Spectroscopically Pure" zinc (from New. Jersey Zinc Company) is given as a function of direction of current flow relative to the orientation of the crystal lattice. For the Kahlbaum crystals the results are very much more consistent than have previously been obtained and point to a higher ratio of p11/p1 than that obtained by Bridgman. The "Spectroscopically Pure" crystals agree in the main with the Kahlbaum, but there are a few exceptional cases which tend to confirm Bridgman's strain theory. It seems more probable, however, that an …

The Chemiluminescence Of Solid Sodium, R. M. Bowie Jan 1931

The Chemiluminescence Of Solid Sodium, R. M. Bowie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the time of Davy, it has been known that freshly cut surfaces of sodium, when viewed in the dark, give off a faint light. G. Rebaul, in 1910, stated that the effect was due to the formation of the hydroxide upon reacting with the moisture in the air. In this article a series of experiments to determine the nature of the chemical reaction which caused the luminescence are described. It was found that the light was accompanied by the liberation of hydrogen, but that its liberation was not always accompanied by luminescence. Reactions in which halides were formed produced …

A New Scientific Musical Staff, Carl E. Seashore Jan 1931

A New Scientific Musical Staff, Carl E. Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The psychological laboratory in the University of Iowa is conducting a number of studies in the psychology of music, laying scientific foundations for the theory and practice of the art. To make these scientific findings in the interpretation of vocal and instrumental music as actually rendered, it has been necessary to design a scientific type of musical score. This has been built as closely as possible in musical terminology but is so designed as to show in great detail how the notes are actually sung and played. For example, instead of indicating the note "C" by the usual musical notation, …

An Appraisal Of Psycho-Physical Capacities And Abilities Significant For Success In Art, Hildegard Dreps

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The nature of art talent has been a problem of considerable research in the last decade. A careful survey was made of all available data in regard to selecting tests which were best adapted for the appraisal of certain capacities and abilities that function in the various artistic performances and 18 tests were selected. These were given to 27 subjects divided into three groups: a superior artistic group, an average group of art students with very little training, and a group of non-art people. Each subject reported individually for the tests and the amount of time required from each was …

Some Recent Contributions To Our Understanding Of Corn Diseases, I. E. Melhus Jan 1931

Some Recent Contributions To Our Understanding Of Corn Diseases, I. E. Melhus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There is probably no other disease problem of greater significance economically than that of corn. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to sketch briefly the progress that has been made in this study and to point, in a general way, to some phases of the problem that are immediately before us. Because of its complexity and the misconception as to its significance, a beginning in this field was tardy. Our method of attack on the corn problem seems to be passing through the characteristic successive stages of investigation. These stages may be traced as beginning with observation of the …

The Vapor Pressures Of Aqueous Solutions Of Lithium Nitrate At 25°, J. N. Pearce, A. F. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vapor pressures of aqueous solutions of lithium nitrate at 25° have been measured by the dynamic method for concentrations ranging from 0.1 M up to saturation. From the data obtained has been calculated the activity of the solute and solvent. The activity coefficients of the salt were calculated by means of the "h" function of Lewis and Randall. The free energy of dilution has been calculated. The activity coefficients show a minimum at about 0.6 M. The same thermodynamic properties for aqueous solutions of potassium chloride, potassium iodide and sodium bromide have been recalculated and compared.

Some Physical Properties Of Aqueous Salt Solutions, J. N. Pearce, M. A. Hooper Jan 1931

Some Physical Properties Of Aqueous Salt Solutions, J. N. Pearce, M. A. Hooper

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The refractive indices of solutions of the alkali halides and nitrates were determined at 25 ° and from these the specific refractivities of both the solution and solute were calculated by means of the Lorenz-Lorentz formula. From density data the partial molal volumes were also calculated. The dielectric constants of the solutions were calculated by means of the Huckel relation involving the refractive index and were found to decrease with increase in concentration, the values for all salts approaching the same small value at saturation. The activities were calculated according to the equation given by Huckel for concentrated solutions of …

The Nature Of Adaptations, O. R. Clark Dec 1930

The Nature Of Adaptations, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

In the October number of this bulletin, in a discussion of the influence of environment upon the growth and development of plants, the statement was made that, on the whole, plants are quite well adapted to the conditions under which they grow. As to the manner by which this ''fitness” has arisen there are some differences of opinion and, in the opinion of the writer, a great many misunderstandings. This is a question to which no ''cut-and-dried'' answer can be given but to which a fundamental principle of biology may be applied.
