Seventy years after the liberation of the camps, Holocaust scholarship remains as vibrant and self-renewing as ever. Important works have been published in recent years; many have helped to shift the spotlight onto topics to which too little attention had been paid. For example, researchers like Omer Bartov, Timothy Snyder and Robert DesBois have focused on the war in the East and mass murder in the western Soviet Union, where some one and a half million Jews were shot by firing squads in what is now often referred to, following DesBois and the title of his book, as the Holocaust …

Cycling State That Can Lead To Glassy Dynamics In Intracellular Transport, Monika Scholtz, Stanislav Burov, Kimberly L. Weirich, Björn J. Scholtz, S.M. Ali Tabei, Margaret L. Gardel, Aaron R. Dinner

Power-law dwell times have been observed for molecular motors in living cells, but the origins of these trapped states are not known. We introduce a minimal model of motors moving on a two-dimensional network of filaments, and simulations of its dynamics exhibit statistics comparable to those observed experimentally. Analysis of the model trajectories, as well as experimental particle tracking data, reveals a state in which motors cycle unproductively at junctions of three or more filaments. We formulate a master equation for these junction dynamics and show that the time required to escape from this vortexlike state can account for the …

Cracks In The Cornerstone: Toward More Informed Decision-Making In Rhetorical Education, David M. Grant

In their forum on the First-Year Cornerstone course, April Chatham-Carpenter and Deedee Heistad (2015) explain their memories of developing the program and sketch a vision of what they hope they have achieved. Certainly, all involved have worked "toward the goal of helping first-year students succeed in college," and they should be commended for their dedication and efforts to bring together often disconnected parts of the university in the name of improving student learning, retention, and overall satisfaction. The decision to invite keynote speaker James M. Lang to the conference, and the creation of the morning plenary panel in particular, was born out of a book group that Martha Reineke and I participated in on Lang’s book, Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (2013). In this book, Lang argues that our best strategies for reducing cheating involve using effective pedagogies that focus on promoting learning. Thus, in contrast to approaches to academic dishonesty that focus on teaching students to fear the consequences of being caught and corresponding surveillance strategies that assume all students are potential cheaters, Lang’s …

Perceptions And Predictors Of Questionable Research Practices In The Biological Sciences, Anita M. Gordon, Helen C. Harton

Faculty Work

A nationally representative sample of 429 biology researchers (40% response rate) from 107 R1 and masters universities assessed the features of six research scenarios and reported the probability they would take the same (questionable) action as the actor in the scenario. Results suggest that individual factors such as moral judgment and perceived internal and external consequences may play a larger role in research misbehavior than perceptions of organizational justice or other features of the research environment.

Conclusions

■ As expected, moral judgment, anticipated shame, and perceptions of harm were the strongest and most consistent predictors of the perceived likelihood of misconduct.

■ Perceived likelihood of detection only predicted for one scenario, and sanctions had no overall effect (sanctions did affect how strongly moral judgment affected likelihoods).

■ There were no differences in perceived likelihood of misconduct by type of university.

■ Early career faculty reported higher likelihoods.

■ Organizational justice was not related to likelihoods.

Words Can Hurt The Ones You Love: Interpersonal Trust As It Relates To Listening Anxiety And Verbal Aggression, Natalie S. Hoskins, Alesia Woszidlo, Adrianne Kunkel

Iowa Journal of Communication

The goal of this study was to examine the associations among interpersonal trust, listening anxiety, and verbal aggression in young adult romantic relationships. Listening anxiety is a factor of informational reception apprehension (IRA; Wheeless, Preiss, & Gayle, 1997) derived/ram the perception of one's inability to effectively process information while listening. Undergraduate students (N = 307) from a Midwestern university completed an online questionnaire. Results revealed that listening anxiety was negatively associated with interpersonal trust and that interpersonal trust was negatively associated with verbal aggression. Further, there was a significant indirect effect of listening anxiety on verbal aggression through interpersonal trust, …

Parasite Assemblages Infecting Native Versus An Introduced Population Of Yellow Bass, Rick Klann

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The parasite assemblage infecting yellow bass (Morone mississippiensis) inhabiting their native range was compared to the assemblage infecting an introduced population. The gills and alimentary canal of 47 yellow bass collected from the Mississippi River (native) and 41 yellow bass collected from Otter Creek Lake in Tama County, Iowa, (introduced) were examined for metazoan parasites. Species richness was higher in the sample from the native population compared to the introduced sample (8 versus 3, respectively). Yellow bass from the introduced sample hosted species that were generalist fish parasites, and these infections were at low intensities. On the other …

Transgender individuals use the Internet, especially social media, to help establish and confirm their gender identity and to discover information which could be beneficial during medical transition. Transgender individuals often need to seek social support, because traditional health environments can be a personally negative experience, can be unequipped to address their particular needs, and can be a place of potential discrimination. Using Gottlieb's (1978) framework of social support, the purpose of this study was to better understand the use of social media by transgender individuals seeking social support related to medical transition.
