Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The area here considered includes northeastern Nebraska, northwestern Iowa, South Dakota, and southwestern Minnesota. From scattered points throughout this region specimens have been sent in to A. J. Anderson to be mounted, and it is through his courtesy that many of the records are here presented. Local records, in the vicinity of Sioux City, are made by the writer unless otherwise credited.

Grass-hopper depredations to farm crops have been of frequent occurrence in Iowa, and figure to a certain extent in the loss account of almost every year in at least some part of the state. Attacks during the summer of 1918 seem to have been the most extensive of recent years. Early in June the young nymphs were seen in great numbers in many of the counties in the southwestern part of the state and a few weeks later they had reached the same stage in the southeastern part of the state. Department of Agriculture, a study of the distribution of some of our native grasses and their relation to Puccinia graminis. The region embraced Iowa, western Illinois and Wisconsin, southern and western Minnesota and eastern South Dakota.

A large part of our thinking about living things is bound up with some system of classification. This system is at once the product of the best thought, and a guide to further thinking. The function of classification as a guide is peculiarly important to beginners. It is therefore extremely desirable that classification should represent correctly the most approved conclusions of the science in question. At the present time current usage in botanical classification is not in harmony with the most approved conclusions. Damage by insects to crops is generally recognized to be of great importance. Not infrequently we see estimates of losses, but even these fail to impress most of us until some widespread insect depredation occurs, such as an outbreak of armyworms, or of white grubs. Several years ago; at the request of President Raymond A. Pearson, the writer made the following estimate of the annual losses caused by insects in Iowa.

The failure of a fruit tree to develop a normal amount of fruit may be due to a number of causes as stated by Kraus in volume VI of the Journal of Heredity. However, unless a plant develops fruit parthenocarpically, the development of fruit depends primarily upon how the pollen and pistil function relative to each other. As Kraus points out, fertilization by no means insures the development of a fruit, for very commonly the fruit does not develop despite the fact that normal fertilization occurred, but, on the other hand, in the absence of fertilization, fruit seldom develops among …

The attention of the writer was first called directly to this problem by certain observations made along the White Water River, in southeastern Indiana, at the time of the great flood which swept that section of the country in the spring of 1913 —- generally known as the Dayton Flood. The writer was attempting to make collections of insects in the bottom lands of this small tributary of the Ohio river between the downpours of rain on Monday, March 24, 1913, at the time when that particular stream overflowed its banks. Early in April of 1917, Mrs. C. B. Doe, living in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, called the writer to her home to see what proved to be a matured larva of a Cerambycid. This white larval form about an inch in length, together with about 50 cc. of wood chewings, had been shaken from a round hole just discovered in one of the pieces of an imitation mahogany book case.

During portions of the past three summers some investigations of the rodents of Iowa have been made under the auspices of the Iowa Geological Survey. These studies have been carried on more particularly in an attempt to determine the economic status of this group of animals in the state but other phases of the work such as matters of distribution, local abundance, etc., of the various species have also been included.

The study of amino acids has come to be recognized during recent years as a subject of tremendous importance, on account of its fundamental relation to the problems of human and animal nutrition. Not many years since, all proteins were thought to be of equal nutritive value. Now we know that many of the proteins are deficient in one or more amino acids, and cannot support life and growth unless supplemented by other proteins which make up the deficiency. The winter of 1916-1917 has shown a number of uncommon things concerning the avifauna of the region under consideration, of which Sioux City is the central station. The notes will be presented in the form of an annotated list of the birds found, but account will not be taken of a number of late migrating species which were seen within the limits of time hereinafter adopted, such, for example, as the Pipit, and others. Winter visitors and summer stragglers only will be listed.

My purpose in writing this list is to place on record data gathered principally from the pioneers of Sac County about the conditions in pioneer days and since. While these data are not as accurate as though they were confirmed by specimens, they are better than no information at all. I have used extreme care in differentiating species and have included some observations of my own made in the more recent years. I have also included some data on adjoining counties.

Iowa Odonata have not been given their due consideration in entomological records of the state. The few articles that have been written dealing with these insects as they occur within the state have been very local in nature. It is the purpose of this paper to list those species that have been recorded in the past and to give new records that have been obtained during the writer's recent collecting trips.
