Piecemeal Change In Higher Education: An Example Of Curriculum Re-Conceptualization, Dessy Stoycheva

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

This paper argues that, even though holistic systemic changes are considered more effective than incremental adjustments, education changes often happen at the piecemeal level. These “inside out” changes can positively impact the education process and culture, resulting in improved academic experiences. As such example, an applied curriculum analysis and re-conceptualization is performed. It offers alternative adjustments that can be made to the standard curriculum so a piecemeal change can take place at the instructional level in the efforts towards improved quality of education.

Identifying The Risk Factors For Food Insecurity In The United States, Destiny Leitz

Major Themes in Economics

Food insecurity is widespread in America and has both humanitarian and economic consequences. The purpose of this study is to identify the risk factors associated with food insecurity so that state officials can tailor assistance programs to benefit those most in need. A logistic regression model is employed using data from the 2016 Food Security Supplement to the Current Population Survey. The results provide evidence that food insecurity is negatively associated with income, education, home ownership, and age; it is positively associated with unemployment, disability, and a state’s tax burden. Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions

The use of de Bono’s CoRT Thinking Skills of “Alternatives, Possibilities, and Choices,” “Compare,” and “Decisions” create opportunities for students to critically think about ideas using a new lens of thinking. The lesson was designed to accommodate twice-exceptional students, gifted students with the disabilities of dyslexia and/or dyscalculia, through three of the de Bono’s strategies integrated with activities. Gifted graduate students in this lesson were presented with an opportunity to explore and analyze the animal-like images from Mars using the three CoRT thinking skills. The Anthropocene is an informal epoch which tries to account for the human imprint on the geological record (see Crutzen and Stoermer 2000). Broken down, the word has two root meanings: Anthropos (humans) and cene (age or epoch). The Anthropocene reflects the idea that humans have changed the Earth’s system to the point where the species has a distinct presence in the geological strata—different layers of rock and sediment which build up, shift around, and erode over time. If formalized, the ‘Age of Humans’ would become an official part of the geological timescale, which extends beyond the most recent Holocene …

Prairie Restoration Series: Seeding, Dave Williams

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

Deciding when to plant a prairie is a challenge. Some species establish better when spring-planted, other species establish better when fall-planted and some species are hard to establish whenever they are planted. Seeding rates of some species may need to be increased depending on when and how they are planted.

Prairie seed can be planted by broadcast seeding, hydroseeding, and drill seeding. Regardless of the seeding method used, it is essential that seed be planted at the proper depth and with good seed-to-soil contact.

Prairie remnants are fragments of the original prairie landscape with their native plant communities still intact. Typically, this means soils were never plowed, graded, or buried by fill. Original prairie is meant to imply that populations of species have persisted or regenerated themselves on site through time (i.e., not planted by people as in prairie reconstruction). Some sites may have had brief soil disturbance in the past, for example, grading to create railroad beds in the 1800s, or fields that were cultivated for brief periods then abandoned. In 2017-2018, the Graduate Program Survey was administered by the University of Northern Iowa's Office of Institutional Research & Effectiveness using the online survey tool, Qualtrics. The purpose of the study was to gain feedback about the educational experiences of UNI graduates. The survey results help the university provide a better graduate experience for future students.

Blended Learning In Credit Recovery, Robin Kuhn

Graduate Research Papers

This project is to create a blended learning module for students who need to recover course credit in order to stay on track to graduate on time from a small rural district with limited teachers and face-to-face time. This project will eliminate the need for the district to pay for online credit recovery services and help avoid scheduling issues that may prevent completion of the high school curriculum by students who fail a class. The project will be tested with students within the district and, if successful, will be implemented for all students who need to recover course credit.

A large body of research focuses on the relationship between sleep and mental health. Poor emotional regulation is costly to the individual’s physical and mental health as well as the wellbeing of the community and economy. To further understand emotional regulation, the current study examines the potential interaction of sleep patterns and hormones. The goal of the current study was to isolate the potentially moderating role of hormones, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine, as moderators in the relationship of sleep patterns and emotional regulation. Emerging Adults' Parent-Child Privacy Management Surrounding Topics Of Career, Religion, And Politics, Maria Butauski

Iowa Journal of Communication

Guided by communication privacy management theory (Petronio, 2002), this study highlights the role of emerging adults' perceptions of parents' behaviors in discussions of career, religion, and politics in their management of the parent-child privacy boundary. Parental behaviors perceived as supportive were associated with more openness and less topic avoidance when discussing career, religion, and politics. However, parental behaviors perceived as interference or neglect were associated with less openness and more topic avoidance across the topics addressed Findings and directions for future research are discussed
