Physico - Chemical Measurements Of Miller's Bay, Lake West Okoboji, Summer, 1964, G. Dennis Cooke

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to report on some physico-chemical measurements of Miller's Bay, Lake West Okoboji, made during summer, 1964, and to compare these measurements to some similar lakes. Lake West Okoboji, a large glacial lake, is located in northwest Iowa near the Minnesota border. Miller's Bay is small and is subjected to soil and domestic drainage. Measurements were made in April and at intervals from June to September. Samples were from 1 and 3 meter depths; depth at the sampling site was 8 meters. An Analysis Of The Outcomes Of Special Summer Programs For Secondary Students Of High Ability, Robert E, Yager, Gerald Krockover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The National Science Foundation has supported special training programs for secondary students of high ability since 1959. This is the report of a study of the outcome of such programs upon the participants. Specific values of the programs were reported to be: 1) renewed interest in the remaining year of high school, 2) development of better study habits, 3) better oriented for college, 4) development of confidence, 5) verification and depending of vocational plans, and 6) general stimulation from a superior academic experience.

This discussion is based upon a paper entitled "A REPORT TO THE PROVINCIAL DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH, PROVINCE OF NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA, ON A SURVEY FOR CERTAIN MOLLUSKS OF THE ENVIRONS OF ST. JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA" sent to the New Brunswick Provincial Health Department in January, 1966. From this survey 17 different groups of mollusks were collected: Acmaea testudinalis Muller, Amnicola limosa Say. A Study Of The Laboratory Method Versus The Lecture Method Of Teaching Biology, Curtis E. Mcmallum

Two sections of biology students at the eighth grade level were taught a unit concerned with the cell with two different methods. One group experienced only lectures and discussions. The other group experienced only laboratory sessions. Although there were certain limitations to the study, the general results tended to favor the laboratory approach. This was particularly apparent in the case of the upper one-third of the classes.

Histological And Gross Studies Of Brain Tissue Of Kittens Exhibiting Spastic Behavior, Wade L. Collier, Kenneth M. Cook, Fred C. Collier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Histological and gross studies of brain tissue revealed lowered brain weight, lower brain weight to body weight ratios, and poor brain development in relation to the degree of spasticity exhibited in kittens but did not reveal any definite histological changes.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Licea biforis was first described in 1893 by B. Morgan (Lister, 1911), and later by Lister (1911), Fullmer (1921), Macbride (1922), Hagelstein (1944), and Martin (1949). Distribution of the species as given by Hagelstein (1944) is: Iowa, Kansas, New York, Ontario, and Pennsylvania. Martin (1949) adds Poland and Eastern Asia, and Macbride (1922) includes Canada. Hagelstein (1944) is of the opinion that L. biforis probably has a much wider distribution than that indicated above, but is overlooked because of its small size and its habitat on dead wood.

Recent intensified . interest in Protista has been motivated largely by simultaneous advances in development of precision equipment and of analytical techniques. The Protista serve well for biological investigation since they are easily obtained, grow well under artificial culture conditions, have a high reproductive potential , and thrive with a mini mum of care. In addition, Protista may be maintained as clonal cultures resulting in identical or nearly identical characteristics, since all organisms are progeny of the same progenitor. The advantages provided by such identical heredities are obvious.
