University Of Iowa Model For Science Teacher Education, Robert E. Yager
University Of Iowa Model For Science Teacher Education, Robert E. Yager
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teachers can learn to assess their teaching performance and to use such information for improvement. Several observations and experiments have led to the formulation of a model at the University of Iowa which continues to grow and to be modified as experiences with it dictate. The model has evolved from over two decades of efforts. However; it has matured as a result of the NSF supported Iowa-UPSTEP program (a teacher-education development effort which enjoyed ten years of support), and the NSTA Search for Excellence project which arose from a 1977-80 NSF research effort called Project Synthesis (Harms & Yager, 1981).

Since the advent of the "horseless carriage" in this country, we as a society have been dealing with the dilemma of preventing deaths, personal injuries, and property damage and loss from automobile accidents. With the ownership of automobiles moving from an item of luxury belonging to just the wealthy, to a daily life-style essential to the masses, traffic legislation has become a necessity of life. Part of this traffic legislation has included enacting laws in an attempt to eliminate alcohol impaired drivers from operating motor vehicles on the public highways.
The Female Hero: An Analysis Of Female Protagonists In Modern Epic High Fantasy Novels, Donald L. Osterhaus
The Female Hero: An Analysis Of Female Protagonists In Modern Epic High Fantasy Novels, Donald L. Osterhaus
Graduate Research Papers
The role of the modern epic high fantasy hero was defined as having the following seven traits among its essential elements: autonomy, resourcefulness, dignity, self reliance, inspiration, physical ability, self knowledge. Thirteen female heroes from modern epic high fantasy novels were analyzed as to what degree they displayed those traits. Data confirmed the hypothesis that women cast in the role of hero in this type of novel display the same traits that men do. A second hypothesis, that the female heroes would tend to be single and then marry at the end of the novel was supported by data, as …
Method Of Extracting Starch From Bacteria, J. M. Dunleavy, K. S. Gobelman-Werner
Method Of Extracting Starch From Bacteria, J. M. Dunleavy, K. S. Gobelman-Werner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Corynebacterium kutscheri required 10 days of growth on semisolid medium to accumulate intracellular starch, but when the same medium was used as a broth, only l day of growth was required. C. kutscheri synthesized starch when amylose was added to nutrient agar in the substrate, but did not do so when amylopectin was substituted for amylose. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was superior to water as a cell wash for removing substrate starch from cells before chemical treatment to remove intracellular starch. Bacterial starch was extracted from C. kutscheri cells by destroying cell walls with lysozyme and sodium lauryl sulfate, removing cellular …

Standing Stocks Of Fish In Some Iowa Streams, With A Comparison Of Channelized And Natural Stream Reaches In The Southern Iowa Drift Plain, Vaughn L. Paragamian
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Comparisons were made of fish populations inhabiting 11 channelized and natural stream reaches in the Southern Iowa Drift Plain and two drainage ditches in the Des Moines Lobe. Fish were sampled with rotenone, identified, enumerated, and weighed. Total densities of fish ranged from 483/ha at Cylinder Creek to 51,941/ha at Walnut Creek. Total standing stocks of fish ranged from 14 kg/ha at a channelized site on the Chariton River to 1,344 kg/ha at an unchannelized site on the same river. Number of fish species ranged from six sampled at Silver Creek to 16 sampled at Jack Creek. Channelized sites contained …

The Portrayal Of Children’S Emotional Reactions To Divorce In Middle-Level Fiction, Janyce A. Struthers Hancock
Graduate Research Papers
A content analysis of eighteen novels for readers in grad•• five through nine was conducted to investigate the portrayal of children's emotional reactions to their parents' divorce. Novels were limited to those published between 1981 and 1986 and recommended in Best Books for Children, Booklist's "Best Books for Young Adults" or "Notable Books for Children, or Booklist reviews prior to July 1, 1986.

The Image Of The Senior Adult In Recommended Realistic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1986, Judith Younker Siler
Graduate Research Papers
This study, patterned after Carolyn Baggett's 1980 doctoral research at the University of Mississippi, was designed to determine if recommended realistic fiction published for young adults in the years 1979-1986 was significantly different (p = .05) than that published in the years 1960-1969 and 1970-1978, The "Chi-square Test with Probe" was used to test the frequencies of 40 characteristics. The categories contained three image statements which were used to record characterizations of older persons in the literature. One statement was a negative stereotype, one was a positive stereotype, and the third was realistic based on gerontological studies. Sixteen books to …

This report is the next in the sequence of such reports being sent each semester to give the University community information concerning grade distributions. These grade distributions are by instructional areas and/or programs rather than departments only. Thus areas such as Educational Media Center, Individual Studies, and Human Relations are also identified. By request, the Humanities and General Sciences areas have been retained with the appropriate departments.

A Case For The Liberal Education Of The Dental Hygienist, Melanie R. Hamer
A Case For The Liberal Education Of The Dental Hygienist, Melanie R. Hamer
Draftings In
Since the 4th century B.C., arguments have pitted the relative merits of a liberal arts education against those of vocationalism. The liberal arts, with its classic traditions and broad curricular base, for centuries has been touted as the education of the privileged class, while a practical course of study benefitted the artisan and others needing a more immediate occupation. Since the late 1960s, vocationalism has enjoyed a period of intense popularity in the American educational system. Like the artisan of earlier ages, the vocational student upon completion of a program is able to assume an entry level position in a …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1985-86, James G. Macmillan
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1975, when the Iowa Academy of Science celebrated its centennial year, a history of the Academy was written. In succeeding years the Annual Reports have acted as a continuation of that history. This report encompasses the year beginning July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1986 and is based on committee reports, Board minutes and the recollections of the author. Each part represents a major activity of the Academy operation.

Summer Occurrence Of The Indiana Bat, Keen's Myotis, Evening Bat, Silver-Haired Bat And Eastern Pipistrelle In Iowa, Brenda S. Clark, John B. Bowles, Bryon K. Clark
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The summer status of the endangered bat Myotis sodalis was assessed in Iowa from 1980-1983. Bats were mist-netted at 35 sites in 16 counties and we captured 1199 individuals representing 9 species. In southern counties, a total of 67 M. sodalis was captured, including 39 reproductive females, 14 nonreproductive females, 12 juveniles, and 2 adult males. Myotis keenii was found throughout the state, but Nycticeius humeralis was most abundant in southern Iowa. Lasionycteris noctivagans was caught as far south as the bottom tier of Iowa counties, and Pipistrellus subflavus was less abundant in central and western Iowa than anticipated.
