Leaf Form Diversification In An Ornamental Heirloom Tomato Results From Alterations In Two Different Homeobox Genes, Hokuto Nakayama, Steven D. Rowland, Zizhang Cheng, Kristina Zumstein, Julie Kang, Yohei Kondo, Neelima R. Sinha

Domesticated plants display diverse phenotypic traits. However, the influence of breeding effort on this phenotypic diversity remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that a single nucleotide deletion in the homeobox motif of BIPINNATA, a BEL-LIKE HOMEODOMAIN gene, led to a highly complex leaf phenotype in an heirloom tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Silvery Fir Tree (SiFT), which is used as a landscaping and ornamental plant. A comparative gene network analysis revealed that repression of SOLANIFOLIA, the ortholog of WUSCHEL RELATED HOMEOBOX 1, caused the narrow leaflet phenotype seen in SiFT. Nanocellulose is made from a mixture of cellulose powder, and a variety of different materials and liquids. Unfortunately the cost to produce nanocellulose isn’t ideal, thanks to shrinkage. The goal of my research this year was to try to make nanocellulose more cost effective, by reduce shrinkage.

A collection of approximately 1000 jars of preserved fiddler crabs was received from Dr. F.H. Barnwell, Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, University of Minnesota–Twin Cities. It contained jars of crabs from Africa, the Americas, and the Indo-Pacific. Specimens in each jar were sorted by species and gender and then counted. An Excel® spreadsheet recorded collecting data while Google Earth® determined the GPS of each recovery site. The collection was reduced to 569 jars containing 68 species representing seven genera. The entire collection consists of 7804 crabs with 5925 males and 1879 females. New labels with up-dated information were made for each …

Monarch butterflies have experienced a population decline of more than 80% in the past two decades, driven by the emergence of Roundup Ready beans and corn varieties. This development resulted in landowners spraying herbicides and killing all other plants in their field, including milkweeds, which is the genus of plants (Asclepias) that monarch caterpillars can only feed upon. Along with this development, an initiative to reintroduce native prairie ecosystems as part of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Eighteen fungal samples were isolated from samples of water collected in Wind Cave, South Dakota. Ten of the samples underwent chemical extraction, a growth inhibition test, and were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy. All eighteen of the fungal samples were able to be identified to the genus level using the ITS region of their DNA, however confident identification of the species level was more difficult to attain just looking at one portion of the sequence.

Typical kit-based DNA extraction techniques only isolate ~17% of the total starting DNA from a sample. When analyzing environments with few microbial cells, such as Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, this approach is ineffective. In this study, we developed a modified DNA extraction protocol in order to increase the limit of detection. We conducted a dilution series using known amounts of Escherichia coli over a range of one million cells (1 x 10^6) down to ten cells. DNA was isolated from each of the aliquots using the modified protocol. We used polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) followed by ethidium bromide …

The widespread sampling of environmental DNA from soils has led to a fundamental shift in our understanding of Earth’s microbiome by identifying previously unknown microbes that have never been grown in the laboratory. Many of the published protocols for the extraction of environmental DNA differ based on the starting material. These differences include changes to buffer composition, detergents, and enzymatic digest. To remove this bias, we sought a standardized protocol for samples from Wind Cave National Park, which includes both above ground prairie soil and paleofill from the deepest depths of the cave system. Conventional farming maximizes crop production at the expense of ecosystem services like soil carbon storage. As the human population grows, it is vital to develop practices that balance crop production and ecosystem services.

Mitochondrial Genome Of Geomydoecus Aurei, A Pocket-Gopher Louse, Theresa A. Spradling, Alexandra C. Place, Ashley L. Campbell, James W. Demastes

Parasitic lice demonstrate an unusual array of mitochondrial genome architectures and gene arrangements. We characterized the mitochondrial genome of Geomydoecus aurei, a chewing louse (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) found on pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) using reads from both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing coupled with PCR, cloning, and Sanger sequencing to verify structure and arrangement for each chromosome. The genome consisted of 12 circular mitochondrial chromosomes ranging in size from 1,318 to 2,088 nucleotides (nt). Total genome size was 19,015 nt. All 37 genes typical of metazoans (2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 13 protein-coding genes) were present. An average …

“It All Just Ends”: Death Attitudes Across Age, Gender And Religion [Poster], Bekah Bass

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Death is a social and biological reality that affects everyone, however not uniformly. Utilizing original data and the Death Attitudes Profile – Revised by Wong, Reker, and Gesser (1994), this study investigates differences in death attitudes across different demographics including age, gender, and religion. Results show correlations between positive, neutral, and negative death attitudes and the age of respondents. Additionally, neutral and approach acceptance were found to be associated with gender and religion, respectively. These significant results imply that perspectives on death differ across these identities. Further research on death attitudes among diverse age, racial, ethnic, gender, and religious groups …

Quality And Quantity Of Social Support In College Students With Adhd Symptomatology, Chloe Reeble

Social support has been found to be a protective factor in some mental illnesses. College students with ADHD often have a hard time maintaining peer relationships. This study examines the relation between ADHD and social support in college students. I found that those who experienced increased social impairment and elevated ADHD symptoms experience reduced social support quality. These results suggest that college students with elevated ADHD symptomatology may experience a harder time cultivating and maintaining friendships. Clinical implications include better appraisal of social support in clients with ADHD, and treatment approaches that address social impairment.

The purpose of the Dementia Friendly 18-day email training is to provide participants with a unique and efficient way to learn about dementia through articles and videos in 5 to 15 minutes daily. The content of the presentation will include why and how we got involved in this project, our goals, our methods, the results and feedback received from participants, and ideas for future improvements.

In order to secure long-term practice buy-in and increase new adoption of highly beneficial conservation initiatives like the USDA’s Prairie Strips practice, it is important to ensure farmers can successfully employ native plant revegetation methods on their first try. Many farmers and landowners are new to establishing native vegetation, and must rely on second-hand forms of information such as practice implementation guidelines. Guidelines that are currently available are often not based on applicable scientific research.
