Loess Hills: A National Natural Landmark, Jean C. Prior Jan 1988

Loess Hills: A National Natural Landmark, Jean C. Prior

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Loess is one of the most common geologic materials found on the land surface in the Midwest. This can also be said for the lower Mississippi Valley, the Palouse district of eastern Washington, central and eastern Europe, the Ukraine of southwestern Russia and eastern China. The word itself is German in origin, and as late as the 1860s was regarded as a provincial name for deposits along the Rhine Valley. Loess, glacial history, native grasslands and productive agricultural regions are linked together across the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere.

Editor's Corner - Support And Growth Revisited, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1988

Editor's Corner - Support And Growth Revisited, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The editorial in the Autumn 1987 issue of ISTJ was entitled "Support and Growth." Growth for ISTJ was deemed essential. Support was lacking in some essential aspects. As editor, I had decided it was time to step aside so that the Academy could find the support and provide the opportunity for growth. Since that editorial was written, support has been found and I am pleased to be able to accept reappointment as ISTJ editor. Revisiting the topic of support and growth now seems important.

The Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Children Upon Entry Into A Stepfamily, Leslie Corkery Jan 1988

The Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Children Upon Entry Into A Stepfamily, Leslie Corkery

Graduate Research Papers

As of 1985, over 15 million children in the United States were members of a stepfamily. Each year one million more children are expected to become a part of a stepfamily. With one of two marriages ending in divorce, it is likely the statistics will rise (Martin & Martin, 1985). According to Winch (1971), "A stepfamily is a domestic family in which one or both parents have children from a previous union living most of the time in the same household" (p. 10). A stepfamily may have the appearance of a traditional family but they do not function in the …

Transition Effects On Preadolescents And Implications For Counselors, David Thomas Peterson Jan 1988

Transition Effects On Preadolescents And Implications For Counselors, David Thomas Peterson

Graduate Research Papers

During the past several years the idea of predictable life transitions as playing a very significant part in both the development and the well being of individuals has gained wide acceptance. The purpose of this study will be to survey existing literature relating to the transitional period which usually occurs during the preadolescent years (ages 9-13). A secondary focus will be upon implications for the school counselor who works with this age group. Transitions and transitional periods refer to changes or interruptions in an individual's, family's, and/or institution's pattern of development which serve to connect earlier and later ways of …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Readings For Parents Of Visually Impaired Children, Dotta J. Hassman

Graduate Research Papers

This research project provides an annotated list of recommended readings for parents of visually impaired children. Selection for the list was determined by a) copyright date of 1980 or later, b) two or more recommendations from professionals working with VI children or organizations supporting the VI population, and c) availability from Iowa Commission for the Blind or Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. Forty-seven responses were received from the 101 educational settings and organizations asked to recommend readings for parents of the visually impaired. Thirty-six titles compose the final annotated list. It is divided into six categories: autobiography, child development, …

Current Effects And Consequences Of Tracking, Beverly A. Oppold-Blessman Jan 1988

Current Effects And Consequences Of Tracking, Beverly A. Oppold-Blessman

Graduate Research Papers

Tracking and ability grouping have long been controversial topics in American education. Researchers have been collecting data on their effects for almost three quarters of a century and still disagree about their merits (Kulik and Kulik, 1987). Educators and policy makers have argued about the effects of ability grouping and tracking for an even longer time. Reviewers of research cannot reach an agreement about the value of homogeneous grouping, yet in 1985 it was determined that in 77 percent of all American schools, ability grouping and tracking were practiced to some degree (Dawson, 1987).

Impact Of Parental Divorce On The Lifestyle Outlook Of Young Adult Children, Beverlye J. Nelson Jan 1988

Impact Of Parental Divorce On The Lifestyle Outlook Of Young Adult Children, Beverlye J. Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

One of the more disturbing social phenomena in recent years has been the escalating divorce rate. It is estimated that one-half of all marriages initiated in the 1980 1s will end in divorce (Cherlin, 1981). Out of these marriages and divorces, 60% of the couples who divorce each year have at least one child 18 or younger (Glick, 1979). Glick also predicted that by 1990, 33% of North American children will experience their parents' divorce before their 18th birthday.

Vonnegut's Galapagos: The Myth Of Art, Vice Versa, (Or Something), David J. Gibson

Draftings In

There exists an inherent difficulty in the reading of any of Kurt Vonnegut's works. That is, the circular nature of his tales always leads you from struggling with one topic or concept to struggling with another related, but slightly different approach to the given work. Before you know it you are back where you started, perhaps somewhat more enlightened, but usually just a bit more perplexed. Such is the nature of the process of re-reading.

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau Jan 1988

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Classroom materials for student use are very expensive to purchase from biological supply houses. In many cases, teachers are left with two choices when it comes to laboratory materials, either find some way to produce their own or do without. Preserved and live specimens fall into this category particularly with respect to the higher vertebrates. While it may be impossible, or at least impractical, to keep a suitable number of birds or mammals, it is possible and may even be preferred to study skins, skeletal and other preserved material. Mammal skulls are easy to collect, prepare and preserve for use …

The Theological Experience Of The Color Purple, Dave Cushing Jan 1988

The Theological Experience Of The Color Purple, Dave Cushing

Draftings In

At first glance, most readers would not recognize Alice Walker's novel The Color Purple as a typical example of theological writing. After all, theological truths are usually revealed in ancient, often puzzling manuscripts which are neatly packaged and interpreted for us by doctrinal experts. Even some Sunday sermons take on an impersonal and otherworldly irrelevance which is a long way removed from the everyday earthiness of Walker's novel. But whether they have been exposed to theology in its strictest, formal sense or not, many readers will finish The Color Purple with the suspicion that they have somehow been exposed to …

An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey Jan 1988

An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.

New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed. The impact of these regulations on product development is unclear. Hopefully a dialogue will develop among industry, government agencies, and the public such that reasonable and appropriate …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese Jan 1988

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …
