The Relationship Between Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behavioral Intentions Regarding Mental Illness With A Focus On Schizophrenia, Kellie Kae Boeckmann Jan 1991

The Relationship Between Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behavioral Intentions Regarding Mental Illness With A Focus On Schizophrenia, Kellie Kae Boeckmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to assess subjects' knowledge about schizophrenia in relation to their attitudes regarding the mentally ill. The variables' relationship with behavioral intentions toward persons with schizophrenia was also evaluated. A behavioral intentions scale, developed for use in this study, was completed by subjects in a preliminary study designed to establish the instruments' reliability. The research strategy employed in the principal study involved the use of three questionnaires: (a) the Knowledge of Mental Illness-- Schizophrenia Scale (Wahl, 1987); (b) Scales for Measuring Beliefs About the Mentally Ill (Dear & Taylor, 1982); and (c) the Behavioral Intentions …

Success was measured using the students' grade or grades in either biology or biology and chemistry at the end of their first semester. The subjects for this study were entering freshman biology majors at the University of Northern Iowa who ranged in age from …

Effects Of Race And Socio-Economic Status On Children’S Food Preferences, Reginald M. Chandler Jan 1991

Effects Of Race And Socio-Economic Status On Children’S Food Preferences, Reginald M. Chandler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of race and socio-economic status on children's food preferences. Twenty-four obese and 43 non-obese young children (mean age 5.3 years) looked at an array of pictures of food and selected the pictures of items with which he/she would like to make a lunch. The mothers of the children were escorted into the room after the children had left the room and were instructed to modify, if they wish, their child's food selections. The mothers were also told that the modification of their child's selections should reflect a lunch they …

Gifted Identification Practices In Five Southwest Iowa Public Elementary Schools: Their Impact On The Gifted Underachiever, Lauren E. O'Bradovich Jan 1991

Gifted Identification Practices In Five Southwest Iowa Public Elementary Schools: Their Impact On The Gifted Underachiever, Lauren E. O'Bradovich

Graduate Research Papers

In 1988 the State of Iowa mandated every school district to have a program to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. In addition, the new standards provided that the program would include "valid and systematic procedures employing multiple criteria for identifying gifted and talented students" (Iowa Department of Education, 1988). The subsequent new wave of TAG programs in the state has resulted in the necessity to build nomination and screening strategies for the selection of students for the various programs.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Young Children: A Review Of Literature, Jenny A. Parkin-Werth Jan 1991

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Young Children: A Review Of Literature, Jenny A. Parkin-Werth

Graduate Research Papers

Four-year-old John walks into the classroom on a typical day of preschool. As the other children work in the various centers, he flits aimlessly from center to center creating a minor cyclone behind him. During storytime, he talks loudly. When requested to "zip lips and open ears", he complies for a few seconds, and then leaves the group activity to play with the clay in the art area. When he is brought back to the group, he touches others incessantly and blurts out frequently. John does not walk; he runs. He also climbs on the tables and has a difficult …

Improving Curriculum: An Interdisciplinar Approach To Meeting The Developmental Needs Of Children, Connie Olson Osler Jan 1991

Improving Curriculum: An Interdisciplinar Approach To Meeting The Developmental Needs Of Children, Connie Olson Osler

Graduate Research Papers

A growing interest in cooperative learning, writing-across-the-curriculum, and Indirect, process learning shows that educators are searching for a better way of helping children learn. Educators concerned with developmentally appropriate curricula are questioning classroom teaching strategies and are beginning to revise current curriculum. What can be done to improve curriculum so it meets the developmental needs of children while providing an intellectually stimulating environment and high academic standards? One answer may be the implementation of an interdisciplinary curriculum.

Multivariate Analysis Of The Carex Brevior Group In Iowa, Scott C. Zager Jan 1991

Multivariate Analysis Of The Carex Brevior Group In Iowa, Scott C. Zager

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In Iowa, the most troublesome sedges to identify are Carex brevior, C. festucacea, C. molesta, C. normalis, C. tenera, and C. tenera var. echinodes. These taxa form the C. brevior group--part of an even larger aggregate of species associated with C. straminea. Their morphological features are indistinct and intergrade into one another. Botanists have had difficulty classifying members of this aggregate for nearly 200 years. Some authors have viewed the taxa as separate species, others as polymorphic forms of a single species. Much of the contention has centered upon the variation of taxonomic characters used to delimit and distinguish species. …

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen Jan 1991

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. Recent attempts to measure the effects of technology on social relationships are critiqued, particularly in their inadequate conceptualization and operationalization, confusion of cause and …

Accuracy Of Food Portion Size Estimation By Obese Adults During Weight Control Efforts, Brenda T. Merritt Jan 1991

Accuracy Of Food Portion Size Estimation By Obese Adults During Weight Control Efforts, Brenda T. Merritt

Graduate Research Papers

This research project attempted to assess and describe the food portion size estimation abilities of 30 obese adults participating in weight control efforts. Food records, which include entries of food items and the amount portioned, are tools commonly used in nutrition research and therapy. Little research has been done on portion size estimation accuracy. The ability to do so could be of importance in the clients overall effort to successfully lose weight and maintain their new weight.

Results of analysis of statistical data showed that subjects used measuring devices to aid in portioning less than one-fourth of the time. They …

A Foundation Model For The Practice Of School Psychology, George Michael Harper Aug 1990

A Foundation Model For The Practice Of School Psychology, George Michael Harper

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A major crisis in the profession of school psychology has emerged from the body of recent empirical studies in psychology and education. Research on school psychology assessments has suggested that little, if any, data are produced in these evaluations which is useful for the remediation of students' educational problems. Likewise, psycho- educational treatments of the behavior and learning problems of school children have empirically shown only weak, if any, efficacy. An examination of some of the fundamental philosophical, theoretical, and practical foundations of school psychology yielded reasons for the crisis in the profession. The underlying assumptions of externalism and resulting …

'Eve' In Africa: Human Evolution Meets Molecular Biology, Robert D. Seager Mar 1990

'Eve' In Africa: Human Evolution Meets Molecular Biology, Robert D. Seager

Faculty Work

Recent advances in the study of human origins have increased our understanding of our ancestors. There have been new, major fossil finds. WT 17000, a 2.5 million-year-old robust Australopithecus found in Kenya (Walker et al. 1986), led to a revision of early hominid phylogeny (Delson 1986; 1987). Existing fossil materials have been reassessed. For example, Tattersall (1986) maintains that at least two unrecog- nized hominid species (Homo neanderthalensis, H. hei delbergensis and possibly H. steinheimensis ) existed be tween the times of H . erectus and fully modern H . sapiens.

The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele Jan 1990

The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

To recognize the need for creativity in the classroom as one of the growing concerns in the educational community today is not difficult. When the various teaching methods in science are evaluated, the highly pronounced need for more creativity in science instruction is evident. Few teachers, it seems, experiment actively with teaching techniques and curriculum materials. Most find what works for them and stick with it, and, often, this means teaching science as a lecture course (with some group discussion and a few laboratory experiences). Beginning teachers tend to imitate the persons they considered to have been their best teachers. …
