In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley Jan 1991

In Search Of A Gibberellin Receptor, Lalit M. Srivastava, Konrad A. Sechley

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Use of tritiated gibberellins ([3H] GA1, [3H] GA4) of high specific activity and purity has allowed the determination of GA-specific binding sites in several plant tissues both in vivo and in vitro. In cucumber hypocotyls and pea epicotyls which have been most investigated the binding of [3H] GA; occurs to soluble proteins. This binding is saturable ('n' =about 30 pmol. Mg-1 soluble protein), of high affinity (KD= about 70 nM), and is competed for by other GA, and derivatives in proportion to their biological activity in these …

Mystery Powders A La The Learning Cycle, William Bluhm Jan 1991

Mystery Powders A La The Learning Cycle, William Bluhm

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Even as the 1990s seem to be ushering in a new wave of "hands - on" science, one cannot help but look back to the late 1960s when a previous wave of experiential science programs was crashing ashore. Two programs notable among those spawned during the late 1960s and early 1970s were Elementary Science Study (ESS) and the Science Curriculum Improvement Study (SCIS). ESS units, originally a group of fifty-six independent units covering topics from the physical, biological and earth sciences for K-9, incorporated an instructional strategy called "messing around." "Messing around," which took place during the early portion of …

Meeting Iowa School Accreditation Standards Through Sts Science, John B. Cook Jan 1991

Meeting Iowa School Accreditation Standards Through Sts Science, John B. Cook

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has declared that the goal of science education" ... is to develop scientifically literate individuals who understand how science, technology and society influence one another and who are able to use this knowledge in their everyday decision-making" (NSTA 1982). Strategies aimed at achieving this goal have been endorsed and promoted by a variety of groups. Yet, in many Iowa schools, the science curriculum is driven by traditional textbooks that emphasize narrow academic goals. Iowa school accreditation standards list specific requirements for the science program in grades 1-12. In addition, seven horizontal infusion areas must …

Earthworm Day, Kenneth W. Thompson, Deborah K. Thompson Jan 1991

Earthworm Day, Kenneth W. Thompson, Deborah K. Thompson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Using live animals in the elementary science classroom fosters enthusiasm and encourages curiosity. The earthworms discussed in this article, commonly called night crawlers, are easy to find in Iowa in moist garden soil or around lawns. Earthworms are often used as fishing bait and, because of this, are readily available at reasonable prices from commercial bait dealers or backyard entrepreneurs. Besides their availability and low cost, earthworms are relatively hardy and easily handled by elementary students. For these reasons, and because of the very important role earthworms play in the environment, they were selected to be the focus of the …

Free Will And Knowledge Before And After The Fall, David J. Tietge Jan 1991

Free Will And Knowledge Before And After The Fall, David J. Tietge

Draftings In

There are certain ambiguities that impede a definitive reading of Paradise Lost, and this seems to be accepted as an occupational hazard for most scholars and students who undertake the task of coming to an intelligible understanding of the poem. Many of these interpretive problems result from personal convictions, a love or hate of Milton, or a need to approach the work from specific critical perspectives. In Milton's attempt to clarify human and cosmological origins, he seems to have (out of necessity) made the reading such that it requires us to push our intellectual and philosophical capacities to the …

Isabel Archer's Romantic Identity Quest: Ruin And Realization, Alan Lange Jan 1991

Isabel Archer's Romantic Identity Quest: Ruin And Realization, Alan Lange

Draftings In

I approach The Portrait of a Lady with a decidedly romantic and masculine bias, empathizing with Isabel's aesthetic quest while realizing the futility of it, at least in her circumstances. The Romantic Identity Quest, defined by writers like William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson and which has shaped much of Western culture, is based on a male model of personal development. While the quest may appeal to women, its results fulfill strictly masculine expectations of detachment from the Mother figure. Isabel Archer's quest exemplifies the feminine equivalent of the male's traditional romantic trek, but for Isabel there is no sense …

Focus Area One: Coordinating Services Between Schools And Agencies [Coleman], Harold B. Coleman

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Any child can be at risk at some point during his/her life. An entire family can also be at risk. But what does it mean to be at risk? The Iowa Child Development Coordinating Council has defined at risk for the purpose of prekindergarten children as: An at-risk prekindergarten child is any child, who because of physical or environmental influence is at risk of entering the education program at the kindergarten level lacking sufficient development necessary to succeed.

Any of the following may place a prekindergarten child at risk: • being a member of a low income family (under 150% …

Focus Area Four: Providing Continuity Of Service For Highly Mobile Children And Families [B. Johnson], Barbara Johnson

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Current trends in education find us looking at the problems associated with students we deem at risk of dropping out of school. We have introduced the term "students (or children) at risk" into the educational vocabulary. For our purposes, students at risk will be defined in accordance with the Iowa Department of Education definition, as any student in jeopardy of not completing a high school education and becoming a productive worker. These students include potential dropouts who may be learning disabled, teen parents, youth offenders, academically low achievers, economically deprived children, children of abuse, physically disabled, emotionally or physically traumatized, …

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler Jan 1991

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler

Graduate Research Papers

Children who are members of stepfamilies are an increasing segment of our nation's school population, and their numbers may be expected to grow in the next decade (Crosbie-Burnett & Pulvino, 1990). Some demographers predict that as many as one-third of all children born in the 1980s may live with a stepparent before they are 18 (Kantrowitz & Wingert, 1990). A stepchild is defined as a child whose biological parent has remarried or married someone other than the child's other biological parent. Historically school policies and practices have related to students' families with the assumption that all two-parent families were nuclear, …

Issue Five: Expectations And Standards Of Performance For People Of Color In Education [Schmits], Donald Schmits

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

As one explores the number of variables that can possibly affect how or how much any person learns at any one time, the task of finding clarity to make recommendations on standards of performance seems overwhelming. It does not bode well for clarity when Travers (1973), Second Handbook of Research on Teaching concludes there is no empirical relationship between the type of pedagogy and student achievement test scores. Hovighurst, Moorefield, Passow, and Elliott (1967) in The Sixty-Sixth Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education suggest that to describe the "disadvantaged" we need the following groups: (a) Urban …

Issue One: Curriculum That Adequately Addresses The Concerns And Needs Of People Of Color In Education [L. Brown], Leander A. Brown

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

If the trend in multicultural education literature were examined, we would find that it received major attention for about 10 years from the late 1960s until the late 1970s. Disappointingly, the attention then declined until the late 1980s. Towards the latter part of the active period just cited, Stanley D. Ivie of Shaw University questioned in the Journal of Teacher Education whether multicultural education was a "boon or boondoggle."
