History Of Iowa Natural History - A Symposium, Neil P. Bernstein

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This issue of the Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science presents the first written installment of our symposium: papers on the contributions of Keyes, Pammel, Bessey, and Hayden; the role of the Iowa Natural History Museum; and histories of both the development of early natural history studies and mammalogy investigations. More papers will follow in future issues, and new contributors are welcome.

History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles Jan 1992

History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The first records of mammals in Iowa were from explorers, survey parties heading westward and early seeders. Generation of checklists of state mammals began in 1840 and culminated with the annotated list by Scott (1937) and biogeographic analysis by Bowles (1975). Recent focus has been on rare species status and mammalian ecology, e.g., Loess Hills, riparian habitat, agricultural practices, and reestablished grasslands.

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall Jan 1992

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This report centers around one of today's most prominent environmental issues-- air pollution. First, the major pollutants are defined and explained. Chloroflourocarbons, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and suspended particulate matter all receive attention.

Next, air pollution's effect on the Earth is explained. The "greenhouse effect", global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion all have an enormous impact on Earth's climate and atmosphere.

The report proceeds on to discuss options for controlling and so lving the air pollution problem. Se+ective catalytic reduction, noncatalytic reduction, tradeable permits-- these three processes are examples of large scale attempts …

The Effects Of Spacing A Science Unit On Sound On The Conceptual Understanding Of Eighth Grade Students As Evaluated Through Concept Maps, Lyn Le Countryman Jan 1992

The Effects Of Spacing A Science Unit On Sound On The Conceptual Understanding Of Eighth Grade Students As Evaluated Through Concept Maps, Lyn Le Countryman

Faculty Book Gallery

In 1989, the National Science Teachers Association proposed a new "Scope, Sequence, and Coordination (SS & C)" for grade 7-12 science. Instead of studying science in one-year packages of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth/space science, proponents of SS & C proposed that students study each of these disciplines every year. The idea that students can learn and retain new material better if they study it in spaced intervals rather than all at once provided the focus for this study.

There is a base of psychological research demonstrating the positive effects of "spaced" practice on recall and recognition, but few of …

New Reaction Conditions For The Synthesis Of Wieland-Miescher Ketone, Jonathan J. Bates Jan 1992

New Reaction Conditions For The Synthesis Of Wieland-Miescher Ketone, Jonathan J. Bates

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Natural products chemistry is a very important field of chemistry to chemists, biochemists, and biologists. The ability to synthesize a naturally occurring chemical in the laboratory is necessary for some experiments. Often it is difficult to isolate a large quantity of a compound from its natural source when needed for certain experiments. Established procedures for artificial synthesis of this compound can produce higher yields. Sometimes, the function of a natural product is tested by observing the behavior of analogues in the same biological system. The differences in behavior can be related to differences in structure . Since such analogues are …

Teacher Classroom Strategies For Working With Attention Deficit Students, Susan Lee Schulz Jan 1992

Teacher Classroom Strategies For Working With Attention Deficit Students, Susan Lee Schulz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to gather data to describe (a) teacher ability to recognize the characteristics used to identify students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), (b) teacher familiarity with intervention strategies effective for ADD students, and (c) teacher perceptions of their own knowledge and capability to work with ADD students. The subjects were 277 teachers from Keystone Area Education Agency that completed a 42 item self-report questionnaire. Results of the questionnaire were analyzed using frequency distributions by composite population, by school (four districts participated), setting (regular education or special education), and by sex (males and females). Data was …

Stream Microcosm Toxicity Tests: Colonizing Test Organisms And Predicting The Effects Of Fenvalerate On Riffle Insect Communities, Dan H. Breneman Jan 1992

Stream Microcosm Toxicity Tests: Colonizing Test Organisms And Predicting The Effects Of Fenvalerate On Riffle Insect Communities, Dan H. Breneman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Small streams and rivers draining agricultural watersheds are frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals. Unfortunately, chemical registration procedures currently do not include standardized protocols capable of predicting chemical impacts in lotic ecosystems. Three experiments were conducted utilizing artificial streams and rock-filled artificial substrates in an attempt to further standardize stream microcosm test procedures.

In the first experiment stream microcosms were used to predict the effects of a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide on riffle insect communities. Aquatic macroinvertebrates colonized on artificial substrates were placed in artificial streams and dosed in triplicate at 0.0, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0, and 10.0 ug/L fenvalerate (cyano (3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl-4- …

Early Childhood Education In Japan Compared With Developmentally Appropriate Practice Guidelines In The United States, Nancy B. Gaies Jan 1992

Early Childhood Education In Japan Compared With Developmentally Appropriate Practice Guidelines In The United States, Nancy B. Gaies

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose and content of early childhood education in a culture reflect the culture and serve to maintain it. Also, they reveal the culture's perceptions of childhood and its expectations for its people. Each young child represents a fresh chance for· teachers to mold an ideal person for that culture. The content of early childhood education is created by interaction among the history of the culture, the present conditions in the culture, and the perceived future of the culture. An historical perspective is therefore important.

Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg Jan 1992

Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to focus on the nature of traditional religious and spiritual elements in young adult fiction books.

Thirty-two books from ALA/s "Best of the Best Books 1966-1986" were read, and eight religious contexfs were checked. The findings revealed over one half of the books included moderate traditional religious contexts. About three fourths of the religious contexts were positive, but over one half of them were also negative. Most of the negatives were applied to religious workers and participants in religion. The one book which had strong religious context was totally negative. …

Influences Of The Home Environment Upon Intellectual Giftedness In Young Children, M. Lynn Keller Jan 1992

Influences Of The Home Environment Upon Intellectual Giftedness In Young Children, M. Lynn Keller

Graduate Research Papers

Several factors contribute to the development of intelligence in an individual. Historically, theories concerning the source of human intelligence have ranged from the notion that heredity is the only determinant of intelligence to the concept that positive environmental influences play a major role in the development of the human mind (Clark, 1988; Feldhusen, 1989a; Grinder, 1990; Sternberg & Davidson, 1986).

Time Of Day Effects On Achievement, Peggy Rick Jan 1992

Time Of Day Effects On Achievement, Peggy Rick

Graduate Research Papers

The path of the educational process more closely resembles the flight of a butterfly than the flight of a bullet (Jackson, 1968). In the specific context of classroom teaching, this has been due in part to the differing conceptions of definitions of "good" teaching. In the earlier part of this century it was generally felt that teaching was an art, the belief being that "a little learning and a way with children sufficed for the teacher" (Bennett, 1917). Later this conception was strongly contested by proponents of the view that teaching was a science, the belief being that a development …

Methods For The Teaching Of Science In Grades K-8: A Case For The Constructivist Model And The Science Technology Society (Sts) Approach, Gary Sitter Jan 1992

Methods For The Teaching Of Science In Grades K-8: A Case For The Constructivist Model And The Science Technology Society (Sts) Approach, Gary Sitter

Graduate Research Papers

Considerable research information on science education and/or science methodology cited by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and other researchers (Harms and Yager, 1981; Hurd, 1986; Malecki, 1990; Mitchener and Anderson, 1989) emphasizes a crisis in science education. A majority of those with a special interest in improving science learning feel something must be done to improve the quality of science instruction that students receive. Furthermore, many offer suggestions as to what that something should be (Aldridge, 1991; Blunck and Yager, 1990; Malecki, 1990; Penick, 1986; Stefanich, 1991; Stronck, 1986; Yager, …

Multimedia And Its Effects On Different Cognitive Styles In The Mathematics Classroom, Richard G. Strike Jan 1992

Multimedia And Its Effects On Different Cognitive Styles In The Mathematics Classroom, Richard G. Strike

Graduate Research Papers

Technology has provided the education world with 3 many tools to present information. Multimedia is the latest tool. Multimedia in itself is not a new concept. In the past, teachers and students have used multiple forms of media to create projects such as filmstrips, tape recordings and videos. "Today, the computer has become the conductor of the multimedia orchestra" (Epstein, 1990, p. 40).

The Portrayal Of Interracial Families In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction Books, Judy Mitchell Jan 1992

The Portrayal Of Interracial Families In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction Books, Judy Mitchell

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of children's and young adult fiction books which portray contemporary interracial families. A checklist was prepared to address how the structures of these families are being presented. Three hypotheses were rejected. The first hypothesis stated that the majority of the interracial families portrayed would include on African American and one caucasian parent. The data showed that only forty-one percent of the families fit that criterion. The third hypothesis stated that the majority of interracial families would encourage their children to accept both sides of their heritage. The data, however, showed …

The Portrayal Of Obesity In Young Adult Fiction, Janice E. Weber Jan 1992

The Portrayal Of Obesity In Young Adult Fiction, Janice E. Weber

Graduate Research Papers

This study presents a content analysis of a random sample of 24 young adult fiction books published between 1970-1980 and 1981- 1991, showing the portrayal of obese characters and determining if this portrayal changed over time. Findings concerning obesity were: negative presentations in 79.2%, presence of ridicule in 87 .5% and rejection in 83.3%, obesity shown as a problem to solve by dieting, and a rise of 37.5% in negative portrayals in more recently published books . It is concluded that the idea of "fat acceptance" has not had an effect on young adult fiction and that despite modern society's …

An Examination Of The Six Roles Of The Dental Hygienist In Relation To The Field Dependence-Field Independence Construct, Melanie R. Hamer Jan 1992

An Examination Of The Six Roles Of The Dental Hygienist In Relation To The Field Dependence-Field Independence Construct, Melanie R. Hamer

Graduate Research Papers

Dental hygienists are seeking to remain viable health professionals in the midst of social, political, and economic changes which are occurring in the United States. These changes are expected to accelerate as the nation evolves from an industrial-based society to an information-based society (American Dental Hygienists' Association, 1988) (ADHA) . The shift to an information-based society will have an impact upon health care delivery in the future (Turner, 1988). If the dental hygiene profession is to remain viable in a rapidly changing society, dental hygienists' educational institutions must respond to change.

Figures To Teach: Tropology And Public Speaking, Monica C. Johnstone Jan 1992

Figures To Teach: Tropology And Public Speaking, Monica C. Johnstone

Iowa Journal of Communication

Historically, both oratory and tropology have been major areas of concern for rhetoric. Public speaking still gets its share of attention. But why isn't figuration a major concern in speech today? Though no teacher or text of speech would undervalue the role of language in persuasion, we have neglected the vocabulary which affords us an indispensable looking-glass for scrutiny of language and its effects. This paper is my attempt to regain some of the original wide conception of the place of tropes in our speech pedagogy. Fearing that the loss of this once and future generative means has gone almost …

Skepticism And Science In A Creation Science Textbook, James B. Mcomber Jan 1992

Skepticism And Science In A Creation Science Textbook, James B. Mcomber

Iowa Journal of Communication

At one time, the logical positivists sought to erect firm boundaries between verifiable and unverifiable statements. The former were the proper concern of the sciences and, indeed, of any endeavor claiming the status of truth or knowledge. Unverifiable or untestable statements, including those about values, had no place in science and were deemed, as Ayer once put it, "literally senseless.” In spite of its prohibition against meaningful statements of value, the verificationist principle obviously harbors its own values, namely that the verifiable is good and the unverifiable bad. Implicit in positivist reasoning is the promotion of a scientific ethos that …

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann Jan 1992

Towards The Development Of A Kantian Environmental Ethic, Sally Nelson Wiedmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis is a response to Aldo Leopold's 1949 call for a new, wholistic environmental ethic. Leopold's call stemmed from his concern over the increasing degradation of the environment as a result of a utilitarian approach which judges nature as good only insofar as it is good for human economic and recreational benefit. This thesis is aimed at the development of a wholistic, non-utilitarian environmental ethic grounded in the philosophy. of Immanuel Kant. The thesis begins with a brief review of the utilitarian environmental ethic which Leopold opposed and some of the consequences it has wrought in the natural world. …

A Survey Of Consumer Satisfaction In Residential Treatment Centers In Iowa, David Allen Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The expressed satisfaction of youth in placement in residential treatment centers (RTCs) has not been utilized for maximum benefit. A survey of the consumer's satisfaction with the programs in which they were placed was conducted. Eight of 18 treatment centers participated with a total of 65 surveys completed. Youth ages 12 to 17 in placement in RTCs in Iowa, were randomly selected to respond to 10 questions regarding their level of satisfaction with the program at the center in which they were placed. In general the youth were satisfied with the programs and the staff with whom they worked. They …
