Maternal Mortality In The United States: Focusing On Societal Impacts And Potential Solutions [Poster], Grace Petrzelka

This research project explores the available literature on maternal mortality in the United States, and examines social, environmental, and cultural factors for their impact. With a public health focus, included are discussions on forming safer maternal health practices in our country, comparison of statistics on maternal and infant deaths, and using the available data to create potentially life-saving solutions. Specific topics include race, biology, health policy and legislation, insurance coverage, infant mortality, and family planning. This research project covers a span of academic disciplines, and was created to bring these areas together to promote awareness to a sobering, but meaningful …

Optimizing Graminoid Composition In Cost-Effective Seed Mixes For Prairie Strips, Justin Meissen

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

In order to reduce nutrient loss and increase other ecological benefits, there is growing interest in integrating reconstructed tallgrass prairie stands within and around crop fields. The most recent Farm Bill creates a new conservation practice (CP-43, Prairie Strips) to encourage prairie vegetation in and around farmed fields for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Because this practice is flexible and easy to integrate into conventionally farmed fields, Prairie Strips have proven very popular, and nearly 15,000 acres have been enrolled in less than 2 years (Farm Service Agency 2021).

Background: Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) is an adipokine that is sensitive to energy expenditure and with a potential role in metabolic homeostasis and obesity. This study examined the effects of 12 weeks of three different exercise training protocols on Nrg4 levels, cardiometabolic risk factors, and body composition parameters in men with obesity. Methods: Sixty adult men with obesity (Mean ± SD; age: 27.60 ± 8.4 yrs.; height: 168.4 ± 2.6 cm; weight: 96.7 ± 7.2 kg) were randomly allocated into four equal (n = 15) groups: High- Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Circuit Resistance Training (CRT), Moderate Intensity Continuous Training (MICT) or …

Gender is ever present in education preparation, school materials, curriculum, and school systems. To improve our knowledge about different facets of gender and the extent to which the depiction of gender has changed over time in picture books, there is a need to dig beneath the surface of questions about gender representation in picture books. Given that in-service teachers have proximity to approximately 75 million K-12 students, how in-service teachers think about gender, gender representation, and their own experiences with gender socialization have important implications on how K-12 students think, act, and feel about gender. Triton is the largest moon of the Neptune system and possesses a thin nitrogen atmosphere with trace amounts of carbon monoxide and methane, making it of similar composition to that of the dwarf planet Pluto. Like Pluto and Saturn's moon Titan, Triton has a haze layer thought to be composed of organics formed through photochemistry. Here, we perform atmospheric chamber experiments of 0.5% CO and 0.2% CH4 in N2 at 90 K and 1 mbar to generate Triton haze analogs. We then characterize the physical and chemical properties of these particles. We measure their production rate, their bulk composition with …

Attempts to fuse fantasy and science fiction art work tend to be unidirectional. The artists begin with things that don’t make sense and then force them to make sense to the audience. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. In some images, dinosaurs are given mechanically sound contraptions; dragons are given tendons, and basilisks are drawn with surprising accuracy. It applies science to the fictional to create an image that is plausible. However, my experience with developmental biology and paleontology suggests that it is equally possible to take it in the other direction and begin with things that …

With the recent focus on the causes and effects of climate change, the relationship between agriculture and climate change has become an important concern. Conventional farming maximizes crop production at the expense of ecosystem services like soil carbon storage. As the human population grows, it is vital to develop practices that balance crop production and ecosystem services.

We investigated organic carbon accumulation in restored prairie soil over the course of a decade. Our goal was to determine how organic carbon levels and soil bulk density changed over time, and how that change was influenced by species diversity and soil depth. …
