Anomalous Credibility: Ralph Waldo Emerson And His Ohio Lyceum Audience, Richard Mcgrath

This study adopts a functional approach to source credibility in order to illustrate the situation dependent quality of communicator acceptability and test the utility of Cronkhite and Liska'a GOALS/GRASP schema for assessing public address. The essay demonstrates that rhetorical critics may benefit from using this model as a method for explaining speaker credibility.

A course in communication ethics needs to be grounded in a larger perspective or context. While students are always free to agree or disagree with such a perspective, they should at least be offered a philosophy within which to judge particular communication acts. This paper suggests an ethical perspective which is based on a closer look at kindness.

Nitrate is a worldwide contaminant that causes environmental (eutrophication) and human health (methemoglobinemia, cancers) concerns. Very few techniques are available to eliminate it from natural environment and they suffer from major drawbacks, such as production of unwanted byproducts (toxins or brine). The electrochemical reduction of nitrate on any electrode is relatively slow and catalysts or electron mediators are needed. The goal of this project was to develop a new process that could overcome these disadvantages. As the counseling profession moves into the 21st Century a greater emphasis is being placed on multicultural and spiritual issues. It is difficult to see how the two entities can be separated. When counselors ignore that a client is Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Christian with the unspoken assumption that religion is irrelevant .to their issues, this may jeopardize the forming of an effective therapeutic relationship (Burke, et al., 1999). Knowledge of religion and spiritual beliefs of ethnic groups can help professionals provide care that is culturally specific and sensitive to the beliefs of the individual (Bibbins, 2000).

This paper intends to present some of the most current research on the tremendous benefits which the Internet can provide to ESL education. Some Internet applications which can be used as active teaching and learning tools in the ESL classrooms are being presented in this paper, such as electronic mail, electronic discussion group or "lists," electronic forum, chat room, and keypal. Additionally, this paper intends to bring educators' attention to those issues which affect language learners' interests in using the Internet in their learning. Issues include the lack of training, accessibility of technology, and lack of feedback.

Spartina pectinata Link is frequently omitted from lowland prairie restorations because the seed often fails to grow when planted, and inclusion is limited to plugs of young plants. Anecdotal reports indicated improvement of seed germination following stratification. The effects of seed stratification on the germination of S. pectinata seed were systematically studied. Seed was obtained from both relict populations of plants and germplasm plants as defined by Englert and White (1977). Seed from 5 different collections were subjected to 4 different seed stratifying treatments: imbibed-chilled (1 oc for 15 to 45 days); imbibed-frozen (-12°C for 4 to 7 days); or …

The purpose of this study was to provide suggestions for specific curricular and instructional modifications in science in order to meet the special needs of secondary students with behavior disorders. The study was divided into two parts. The first portion of the study included an extensive literature review that focused on the teaching methods that are most appropriate for students with behavior disorders, achievement and retention under those teaching methods, and adaptations that are the most effective when teaching science to students with behavior disorders. Children develop thinking-language abilities through involvement in the language processes. A print-rich environment representing the many genres of literature extended across the curriculum offers meaningful experiences with the language functions. Such literature experiences and related expressive activities can provide in-depth study in the content areas, expanding the understanding of units' concepts and related vocabulary.

A science unit on whales for kindergarten was enriched through literature experiences. The activities were presented through teacher-directed sessions and student-initiated activities available in the learning centers. The result of this extensive print-rich environment was in-depth study and enthusiastic responses on the part of the students.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in this country (Meyers, 1996), with 40% of the adult population having tried it at least once. Senay (1998) indicated that 9.1 percent of individuals who have ever tried marijuana become dependent. Those who use more than a few times weekly are estimated to be at a considerably higher risk of developing dependence, possibly as much as 20 to 30 percent higher (Denning, 2000).

The goal of this research paper was to describe one Waterloo Community School District elementary school librarian's experiences in dealing with a District-imposed Internet filter. An Internet filter was imposed on public schools and their library media programs in the Waterloo Community School District (WCSD). The population of this study consisted of various administrators, School Board members, District facilitators, coordinators, principals, computer technicians, teachers, and secretaries. This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 25 contemporary young adult fiction books published between 1990-2000, to determine if stepfamilies are portrayed accurately. Contemporary American families are less likely to endure as a traditional biological household. Novels read by young adults may not reflect these new realities. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles stepparents are portrayed positively and they gave their stepchild time and flexibility to adapt to the stepfamily situation. The study, limited to three elementary buildings in the Bettendorf Community School District, Bettendorf, Iowa, was conducted in the Spring of 2001. Twenty-two students from the Talented and Gifted program, SAIL, (Services for Academically Inquisitive Learners) were selected to participate. SAIL Online was an interactive closed web site that provided tools for instruction, research, teacher/student communication, and peer interaction.
