PURPOSE AND HISTORY

The Tallgrass Prairie Center (TPC) Plant Materials Program at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) aims to increase the availability and affordability of regionally appropriate, Source Identified (SI) native seed for roadsides and other restorations. We serve a linking role within the native seed system in our region by:

1) developing SI foundation stock seed that is regionally adapted and genetically diverse for the native seed industry.

2) fostering communication across the native seed supply chain.

Using Color With Care: An Exploration Of The Application Of Psychological Color Theory Within Language Classrooms, Mackenzie Wisneski

Research in the Capitol

This study is a qualitative analysis of the instructional uses of color for social-emotional and academic assistance within language classrooms. Learners’ environment in relation to information acquisition and retention matters (Krashen, 1982; Maslow, 1970; Perry, 2006), and developing practices connecting color and emotion is beneficial for the psychological regulation of those within any environment (Güneş & Olguntürk, 2020). This is especially important for emergent bilingual students, as these learners are disproportionately exposed to additional academic, emotional, socio-economic, and cultural challenges (Benesch, 2012; Beyer, 2017; Heineke & Vera, 2021). The important role of nutrition in proper neural functioning and mental health has seen wider acceptance, but is still sadly under recognized given the existent body of research. This Special Issue was designed to unite authoritative information on this topic in one volume. This editorial provides an overview of the issue, and suggests that the combination of social isolation, lack of exercise, and remaining indoors that overtook industrialized societies during 2020 are specific factors expected to change the Gene × Environment interactions for anxiety and depression. The seemingly never-ending instances of reported sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests is commonly thought to be a matter of deviancy and crime. This is true; but there is more to the story. The RC Church has, for two thousand years, known of the sexual behaviors and deviancies of its priests, yet has accomplished little in controlling the situation. The rise of the lawsuit against the Church has led, finally, to the need to examine more deeply the reasons for this ongoing criminal behavior. Family Communication Patterns And Educational Orientations, Nathan Miczo, Lisa A. Miczo

Iowa Journal of Communication

This research investigates the impact of family communication patterns on educational orientations. Two hundred and nine students completed an online survey assessing family communication patterns (conversation and conformity orientation) and educational orientations (learning orientation and grade orientation). Regression analyses revealed that both conversation and conformity orientation were positive predictors of learning orientation, while only conformity orientation was a positive predictor of grade orientation. The discussion highlights the need for continued research into the role of the family as an influence on college student motivations.

Semillas: Elementary Spanish I is a comprehensive introductory Spanish open-access textbook with reading, listening, speaking, and writing practice. To ensure that our textbook is diverse and inclusive we have built a team of writers who cross gender, age, and nationality. We have consulted with people whose voices represent diverse demographic segments of the Spanish-speaking world to include a plurality of pronunciations and appearances. This textbook underwent a rigorous review process that included professionals from more than ten higher education organizations in the United States.

For nearly 40 years, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has implemented practices to reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and provide habitat for wildlife and pollinators on highly erodible cropland in the United States. However, an approximately 40,470 ha (10 million acres) decline in enrolled CRP land over the last decade has greatly reduced the program's environmental benefits. We sought to assess the program's enduring benefits in the central and western United States by (1) determining the proportion of fields that persist in CRP cover after contracts expired, (2) identifying the type of agricultural production that CRP fields shift to …

Neurodiversity is a new and emerging topic within the field of communication sciences and disorders. This literature review describes what neurodiversity is alongside part of the history of neurodiversity, and then turns and looks at neurodiversity and neurodiverse-affirming care in the field of speech language pathology. Exploring The Microbial Composition Of Moonmilk In Wind Cave National Park, Emma Pellegrino

Moonmilk is a white substance mainly composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) that is often found in limestone caves. It is one of many mineral composites, or speleothems, in Wind Cave National Park South Dakota and is thought to be formed by microbial activity. This cave system is a complex, isolated environment that serves as an analog for similar domains beyond the Earth. Each site has varying degrees of human exposure, from public tour routes to caverns only occasionally visited by park rangers, making it an ideal place of study for pristine samples in extreme conditions.
