Pandemics are regularly occurring events, and there are foundational principles of pandemic preparation upon which communities, regions, states, and nations may draw upon for elevated preparedness against an inevitable future infectious disease threat. Many disciplines within the social sciences can provide crucial insight and transdisciplinary thinking for the development of preparedness measures. In 2023, the National Science Foundation funded a conference of circumpolar researchers and Indigenous partners to reflect on COVID-19-related research. In this article, we synthesise our diverse social science perspectives to: (1) identify potential areas of future pandemic-related research in Alaska, and (2) pose new research questions that …

Engineered Transcription Activator-Like Effector Dimer Proteins Confer Dna Loop-Dependent Gene Repression Comparable To Lac Repressor, Nicole A. Becker, Justin P. Peters, Elizabeth Lewis, Camden L. Daby, Karl Clark, L. James Maher

Natural prokaryotic gene repression systems often exploit DNA looping to increase the local concentration of gene repressor proteins at a regulated promoter via contributions from repressor proteins bound at distant sites. Using principles from the Escherichia coli lac operon we design analogous repression systems based on target sequence-programmable Transcription Activator-Like Effector dimer (TALED) proteins. Such engineered switches may be valuable for synthetic biology and therapeutic applications. Previous TALEDs with inducible non-covalent dimerization showed detectable, but limited, DNA loop-based repression due to the repressor protein dimerization equilibrium. Association Between Bullying Victimization And Health Risk Behavior In Adolescents, Ana Beatriz Pacífico, Eliane Denise Araújo Bacil, Mariana Ardengue, Thiago Silva Piola, Michael Pereira Da Silva, Fabio Fontana, Ademar Avelar, Wagner De Campos

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association between bullying victimization and health risk behaviors in adolescents. Methods: A representative sample of 1020 adolescents participated in the study. The variables such as bullying, health risk behaviors (tobacco, drugs, alcohol, sedentary behavior, smartphone use, level of physical activity, and sleep), and economic status were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were obtained using binary logistic regression and ordinal, gross, and adjusted logistic regression (p< 0.05). Results: Victims of bullying were more likely to smoke (OR 1.75; 95%CI 1.28–2.40), consume alcohol (OR1.43; 95%CI 1.05–1.94), have worse sleep quality (OR 1.94; 95%CI 1.28–2.91), and more sedentary behavior (OR 1.43; 95%CI 1.08–1.89) than those who were not bullied. However, victims were more likely to have high levels of physical activity than their non-bullied peers (OR 1.66; 95%CI 1.22–2.27). Conclusions: Bullying victimization was associated with an increased predisposition for the adoption of health risk behaviors. Interestingly, victims were also more prone to participate in physical activity.

Intensified land use has led to the decline of tallgrass prairie, resulting in habitat loss and reduced ecosystem services. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) aims to restore cultivated land to its natural state. This study explores various methods to enhance the environmental benefits of CRP initiatives. Research was conducted from May 30th, 2024 to June 7th 2024 at the Tallgrass Prairie Center using a 3x2 factorial design: three seed mixes, two planting dates, six replications. All blooming inflorescences were recorded in five 0.125 m2 quadrats along a randomly positioned transect. Additionally, 5-minute perimeter walks were performed for each plot to …

In Iowa, over 99% of tallgrass prairie has been converted to agricultural land. Intensive farming practices have been linked to habitat decline and reduced ecosystem services, which have severely impacted pollinator populations. The USDA Farm Services Agency established the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to provide incentives for landowners who enroll farmland to be restored to prairie. This study examined the effectiveness of CRP initiatives concerning the availability of floral resources throughout the season. The aim of this project is to make high-resolution images of the 23 species of fiddler crabs inhabiting coastal regions of Europe, East Africa, North America, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and South America. So that these can be used by anyone to identify species, the images will be published on the UNI - Rod Library ScholarWorks webpage (https://scholarworks.uni.edu/) and publicly available on the World Wide Web.

Investigating The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy, Science Teaching Beliefs, And Science Teaching Practices In Pre-Service Science Education, Carolyn Kress, Kiran Willis, Jesse Wilcox, Diva Dodiya, Pranav Kota, Jerrid Kruse

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

This study explored pre-service secondary science teachers’ self-efficacy, science teaching beliefs, and science teaching practices. We measured self-efficacy (Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument-B), science teaching beliefs (Teacher Belief Instrument), and effectiveness (Local Systemic Classroom Change Observation Protocol) three times throughout the semester. Overall, there was a significant increase in self-efficacy, science teaching beliefs, and effectiveness between measures one and three. However, three different trends were observed when looking at participants in smaller groups: the Dunning-Kruger effect, consistent growth, and the false consensus effect.

Fertility rates have long been a subject of extensive research. In our constantly evolving world, economists have examined these rates across different times and regions to understand how cultural and economic factors influence women’s fertility. This paper analyzes historically significant factors to determine if their impact has changed over time, aiming to inform policies addressing the declining fertility trend. Data from the IPUMS USA 2021 census was used, estimated through a logit odds ratio regression with robust standard errors, and analyzed at the ten, five, and one percent significance levels. When investigating the trafficking of wild species, animals are often considered before plants (Phelps et al. 2015). This is especially detrimental to members of the orchidaceae family, which are victims of an extensive illegal trade. It spans the entire globe but is especially concentrated in Southeastern Asia (Phelps et al. 2015). When regarding legislation, however, orchidaceae species are some of the most protected in the world. International legislation such as CITES restricts the movement of endangered orchidaceae across borders (Hinsley 2018). The 1992 Convention on Biodiversity (Lawson et al. 2019) also has policies regarding international orchid trade. National laws regulate …

Since more people were able to afford homes, The Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC) created Residential Security Maps, to “ensure” that the recipients of these loans would be able to repaid the banks. These maps were the redlining maps responsible for housing segregation in many cities within America.
