Agricultural Drainage Tiles: An Overview Of Their Use, Benefits, And Effect On Hydrology And Water Quality, Brian B. Gedlinske

Agricultural drainage tiles (ADTs) have become an integral part of the Midwest’s economy by their ability to transform fine-grained, poorly drained soils into highly productive farmland. Because of their design and function, they also pose a number of detrimental consequences related to water quality, stream bank erosion, a loss of wetland areas, increased baseflows, and flooding intensity. This research paper explores how ADTs contribute to the agricultural pollutant loading problem experienced in Midwest streams. It also identifies new practices and technologies being pursued to mitigate their impact.

In learning genetics, many students misunderstand and misinterpret what “dominance” means. Understanding is easier if students realize that dominance is not a mechanism, but rather a consequence of underlying cellular processes. For example, metabolic pathways are often little affected by changes in enzyme concentration. This means that enzyme-producing alleles usually show complete dominance. For genes producing nonenzymatic proteins such as collagen or hemoglobin, the amount of product matters, and dominance relationships are more complicated. Furthermore, with hemoglobin, dominance can change depending on what aspect of the phenotype is being studied and on the environmental conditions. X-linked genes are a special …

Open Educational Resources

Gifted students with visual impairments are twice exceptional learners and may not evidence their advanced science aptitudes without appropriate accommodations for learning science. However, effective tactile science teaching materials may be easily made. Recent research has shown that when tactile materials are used with all students in the class, everyone benefits. This presentation provides many classroom-tested example sets of tactile materials for teaching upper elementary and middle school science concepts. These science concepts include the parts of: a flower, ear, insect, beaver habitat, volcano, hydroelectric power plant, plant cell, and sun. Since 1940, road salt use in the United States has escalated from roughly 0.28 to over 16 million metric tons annually. This long-term, intense deicing use has created environmental concerns – typically over surface water quality, aquatic life, and vegetation. Recent work, however, also ties road salt use to rising chloride (Cl-) concentrations in groundwater supplies.
