Tree Succession In Pine Hollow State Forest And Its Implications, Edward T. Cawley Jan 1965

Tree Succession In Pine Hollow State Forest And Its Implications, Edward T. Cawley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana are replacing Pinus strobus and Quercus alba on the upland ridges of Pine Hollow State Forest Preserve. Any further detailed studies of the history of the pine in the preserve require not only the preservation of the pine-dominated stands but all upland stands. Since some of these are being logged within the preserve, future management should be changed to insure the protection of all the plants in the preserve. This can only be accomplished by formal legal dedication of the area as a preserve.

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Today, as perhaps at no time previously, the English department of the American high school has come in for scrutiny and alteration. The most recent convention of Iowa English teachers (April, 1965) found new programs in literature to be "exciting," new approaches to writing "exciting," new developments in advanced classes "exciting". Innovation and renovation are a part of the scene. As many English teachers are beginning to learn, changes in curriculum and in text materials and in approach to the subject are coming so rapidly that no one has had time to assess the changes or to draw any concrete …

Some Matters Of Concern In The County Conservation Program In Iowa, With Special Reference To Land Use, J. Harold Ennis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Eighty-three of Iowa's 99 counties have established County Conservation Boards. County park areas, river access sites, wildlife areas and roadside parks in that order lead the list in numbers developed to date. Polk, Linn, and Black Hawk counties lead the list in area available with 2544, 2275, and 1952 acres respectively. Special safeguards are urged for administration of lands preserved for scientific purposes.

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt Jan 1964

Dispersal Related To Density In The Amphipods Hyalella Azteca And Gammarus Pseudolimnaeus, Philip T. Clampitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The relationship between population density and rate of dispersal and tendency to aggregate in two species of fresh-water amphipods, Hyalella azteca (Saussure) and Cammarus pseudolimnaeus Bousfield, was tested by laboratory experiment. Populations of H. azteca showed an inverse relationship between initial density and dispersal rate; this relationship is a function of the tendency of populations of higher densities to form aggregations. The dispersal rate of G. pseudolimnaeus was not appreciably affected by changes in population density, and increased density did not result in aggregation. Both species aggregated around vegetation in preference to aggregation around other amphipods. The non-aggressive behavior and …

Educators are always alert and watchful for new and better instruments of measurement to be used in serving the student in gaining new insights into his concept of self. Of all the areas of individual differences which lend themselves to testing there is none in greater need of development than that of personality assessment. Any new test, any new approach to this assessment, is worthy of careful research and analysis. While studying at the State College of Iowa, the writer was introduced to the Beck Word-Color Association Test. In the analysis of two gifted boys in Cedar Falls, Iowa, it …

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted Jan 1963

The Development Of A Handbook For Use In The Selection Of Materials On Communism For Secondary Social Studies Classes, Richard Raymond Olmsted

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Following World War Two, the United States and the Soviet Union became the chief rivals for world leadership. Because of this, communism replaced fascism as the totalitarian ideology of most concern to Americans. This new situation brought with it a series of problems for the public schools: Should secondary schools teach about communism? How should this topic be approached? What materials should be provided for use by high school students?

For a time, public hysteria prevented the logical resolution of these problems. George B. Bruntz describes this period in the following way:

There was a time when the mere mention …

The increase or decrease of the number of workers in a given field of employment may affect the desire of prospective employees to enter a given position or level. The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming Jan 1963

The Role Of The School Counselor As Viewed By Parents And Counselor-Educators, Donald Allen Fleming

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Guidance in the public schools of the United States is a fairly recent development. The Vocational Bureau, established by Frank Parsons in 1909, represented one of the first organized efforts to supplement home guidance. Since that time the scope of guidance has expanded from vocational guidance to include educational and socio-personal guidance as well. With the rapid increase in guidance services in schools, research concerning the guidance program has not kept pace. Much of the information and material published is based on an inadequate background of research. Authors have speculated on the values and place of guidance, but have had …
