Psychotropic Drugs As Impediments To Effective Counseling, Lois Jeanne Mayne Jan 1986

Psychotropic Drugs As Impediments To Effective Counseling, Lois Jeanne Mayne

Graduate Research Papers

While psychotropic drugs have proven useful in the treatment of a variety of psychological and behavioral disturbances, they simultaneously hinder the counseling process (Matorin and DeChillo 1984). There are so many possible drug side effects that it is increasingly difficult for a counselor to record accurate case notes on a client who is exhibiting drug induced psychological or medical conditions. Matorin and DeChillo (1984) recommended that the professional counselor, the attending physician and the client, if possible, meet to discuss the potential drug side effects thus assuring that the overall functioning of the client is taken into account. When assessing …

Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer Jan 1986

Programs For Improving The Academic Achievement Of The Marginal Student, David Joel Ziesmer

Graduate Research Papers

Education in America derives from a society that honors success, competition, and achievement. With these components being emphasized in schools there is an unavoidable consequence. 3 A group of students will see themselves or be perceived by others, as losers (Wehlage, 1983). The secondary educational system refers to these students as underachievers, non-achievers, disadvantaged, undermotivated, disaffected, school-alienated, at-risk for failure, and marginal.

An Overview Of Stressors Common To Stepchildren And Appropriate Counseling Interventions, Barbara Marilyn Wildung Kramer Jan 1986

An Overview Of Stressors Common To Stepchildren And Appropriate Counseling Interventions, Barbara Marilyn Wildung Kramer

Graduate Research Papers

Despite the recent research on the effects of divorce on adults and children, much less attention has been given to the effects of parental remarriage and stepfamily issues (Prosen & Farmer, 1982). With an estimated one-half million adults becoming stepparents every year and one out of every six American children under the age of eighteen living in a stepfamily, stepfamilies could be more prevalent than nuclear families by 1990 (Prosen & Farmer, 1982; Visher & Visher, 1979).

Physical Attractiveness Perceptions: Effect On The Counselor / Client Relationship, Georgia Rose Keenan Jan 1986

Physical Attractiveness Perceptions: Effect On The Counselor / Client Relationship, Georgia Rose Keenan

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of physical attractiveness appears to be an important dynamic of human existence (Barocas & Vance, 1974; Berscheid & Walster, 1972; Corrigan, Dell, Lewis, & Schimidt, 1980; Pogrebin, 1983; Ponzo, 1985). In the United States, billions of dollars are spent each year for cosmetic aids to improve appearance and societal acceptance (Pogrebin, 1983). "We live in a society that spends millions more on looks than on education or social services, yet we are oblivious to the impact of these priorities on the economic and emotional texture of our lives" (Pogrebin, 1983). Ponzo (1985) stated that as a society we …

Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas Jan 1986

Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas

Graduate Research Papers

As the once clear definitions of marital roles become increasingly blurred by the new options available to women and as the incidence of divorce continues to rise, the relationship between sex role behavior and marital dissatisfaction has become an area of mounting concern. Many women today who find themselves in more traditional type marital roles are beginning to question if, in fact, their unequal role status within their marriage is truly satisfying.

A Study Of Stress Perceived By Resident Assistants At The University Of Northern Iowa, David A. Shaw

Graduate Research Papers

All of us are exposed to some form of stress throughout our daily lives. This stress could be experienced in a variety of ways, whether it be from our jobs, interpersonal relationships, insecurities, or other factors that affect us. The resident assistant (RA) is exposed to the same stresses as other college students, as well as the additional stress placed on one who is balancing academic pressures along with the responsibilities of the RA position.

The Effects Of Early Field Experiences In The Professional Preparation Of Teachers: A Review Of Related Literature, Patricia K. Jackley Jan 1986

The Effects Of Early Field Experiences In The Professional Preparation Of Teachers: A Review Of Related Literature, Patricia K. Jackley

Graduate Research Papers

Early field experiences claim almost universal acceptance as a requirement in the professional development of teachers. The theory-practice link, in almost all professions, lies in the clinical experience component of professional studies. The design and development of effective clinical experiences contribute not only to the prospective member's knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, but also serve to characterize the evolution of the profession itself.

Stress And The Elementary School Student: Implications For The Elementary School Counselor, Gregory Paul Garth Jan 1986

Stress And The Elementary School Student: Implications For The Elementary School Counselor, Gregory Paul Garth

Graduate Research Papers

Elementary children, like anyone else, experience stress. Their world is not nearly as safe and protected as most people believe (Shapiro and Rylewicz, 1976). They have fears and anxieties that are just as threatening to their lifestyles as adults. However, where adults may understand the signs of stress, most children do not understand their reactions to stress or how to deal with stress.

Effects Of Maternal Employment On Children, Dianne Elizabeth Rider Jan 1986

Effects Of Maternal Employment On Children, Dianne Elizabeth Rider

Graduate Research Papers

The movement of females into the working force is a significant social change affecting families in the United States today. Changes taking place in the structure and lifestyle of the dual-working family have been studied by several researchers. Hall and Hall (1979) report that 42% of couples living in the United States are both employed. The traditional style of family ceases to be the norm (Hall & Hall, 1979; Bennett & Reardon, 1985; Hoffman, 1979, 1980; Hohenshil, Hummel & Maddy-Bernstein, 1980). In the early 1980s, only 7 out of 100 United States families consisted of a working father, an unemployed …

Stress And Coping Among Nurses, Janet Kratzer Stephan Jan 1986

Stress And Coping Among Nurses, Janet Kratzer Stephan

Graduate Research Papers

In the past thirty years, stress in American society has been examined from a myriad of aspects. Researchers have approached the study of stress and its resultant complications from a sociological base (McGrath, 1956) and a psychological base (Gentry & Parkes, 1982). Stress has been explored as industrial stress (McLean, 1974). Conditions of social class variables (Syme & Berkman, 1976) and the stresses of working women (Jacobsen, 1982) have been documented. No matter what aspect or approach these researchers used, the basic definition of stress in all of these discussions continues to be one formed by Dr. Hans Selye. Selye …

Gender Considerations In Courses Selected By Secondary Students, Margaret Jean Moser Flathmann Jan 1986

Gender Considerations In Courses Selected By Secondary Students, Margaret Jean Moser Flathmann

Graduate Research Papers

Course selection by secondary students has been studied from many different perspectives over the past decade. Intellectual ability, social class, and cultural distinctions have been discussed as causes of segregation in course selection. A less studied causal factor of segregation in course selection has been. gender differentiation. Recently, a well publicized concern has surfaced regarding the lack of women entering the fields of mathematics and science, particularly at advanced levels. Investigations have disclosed that even at the high school level, females have not chosen mathematics and . . science courses. Some researchers argued that it was mathematical reasoning ability that …

Research Activities At The University Of Northern Iowa, July 1, 1984 To June 30, 1986, University Of Northern Iowa. Office Of The Graduate College.

History of Education Book Gallery

This is the second of a proposed series of biennial reports which attempts to summarize some of the research and creative activity of the faculty, students, and research units at UNI. To be included, the activity must have been conducted between July 1, 1984 and June 30, 1986. Data have been derived from a number of offices: grants and contracts, commencement programs submitted by the Registrar, publications in the President's Bulletin, Academic Deans, and the Graduate College. Most of the data are presented in table form and are self explanatory.

Gifted Females And Underachievement In Mathematics And Science Careers, Rebecca A. Hanlon Jan 1986

Gifted Females And Underachievement In Mathematics And Science Careers, Rebecca A. Hanlon

Graduate Research Papers

A review of the literature showed that gifted females are underrepresented in the fields of mathematics and science. One major reason for few women in traditionally male careers is lack of participation in advanced mathematics and science courses. Internal causes of a lack of participation are ability, values, confidence, motivation, personality, and perceptions. External causes are stereotypes and parental support. Career choice is affected by tradition, marriage, and family. Attempts have been made to change attitudes and career aspirations, but more needs to be done in the areas of education, counseling, careers, and research.

Induction Programs For Beginning Teachers, James Bennett Hamilton Jan 1986

Induction Programs For Beginning Teachers, James Bennett Hamilton

Graduate Research Papers

The first year of teaching has been described as a sink or swim experience. The beginning of a teaching career for some may be filled with excitement, challenge, and success. For others, the first year of teaching may seem to be a confusing, frustrating time, filled with feelings of defeat and failure (Ryan, 1970; Ryan et al., 1980; Gaede, 1979; Grant and Zeichner, 1981).

Instructional Leadership: The Challenge Changing The Face Of The Principalship, Karen Nord Murtinger Jan 1986

Instructional Leadership: The Challenge Changing The Face Of The Principalship, Karen Nord Murtinger

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, the role of the principal in the elementary school has been one of management, discipline, supervision and the coordination of these three elements. The principal managed the physical plant, the budget and supplies, and support personnel. She/he disciplined students and staff when necessary and generally supervised all of these elements with a smooth-running operation being the primary goal. For the first half of the Twentieth Century the principal operated successfully in this authoritarian manner (Giammatteo 1981). Increasingly, however, this historical role has been challenged.

An Analysis Of Factors Affecting The Status Of Evolution As A Topic In Iowa High School Biology Classrooms, Heidi Ann Andre

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to determine the status of evolution as a topic in Iowa high school biology classrooms. The extent of its coverage, as well as the type of understanding exhibited by the teacher, was viewed in light of the teachers' religious background, community opinion and college training. Two survey instruments were utilized to gather data. Instrument One was designed to quantitatively examine the structure of Iowa high school biology classes, textbooks used and the educational background of the teachers. Instrument Two was constructed to analyze Iowa biology teachers' self-perceived religious and scientific backgrounds relative to their treatment of …

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge Jan 1986

We Will Survive: An Ethnography Of The Grateful Dead Following, Ray Eldridge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiencing continual re-creation during each of the twenty-one years preceding 1986, this study's core may continue to unfold indefinitely. Although discovered to encapsulate elements grounded elsewhere, this culture centers upon an experimental musical group known as the Grateful Dead. First encountering the Grateful Dead in the summer of 1981, their ageless repertoire failed to capture me, but an unusual audience filled my senses. Flowing print skirts and other bright but tired attire suggested San Francisco of a time then fifteen years past. Subdued excitement replaced the alcohol inhibition of many rock shows. As the band finally appeared, a peacefully elated …
