The Seriously Ill Child: A Case Study Of Communication Change In An Acquired Culture, Willard A. Underwood, Janice M. Underwood Jan 1991

The Seriously Ill Child: A Case Study Of Communication Change In An Acquired Culture, Willard A. Underwood, Janice M. Underwood

Iowa Journal of Communication

In 1977 our youngest child was born with a life-threatening, heart defect. For the first 18 months of life, until corrective surgery, family relationships were redefined as responses to specific and immediate needs of that son. After surgery, family behaviors remained adapted for the requirements of living with a handicapped person. This article is an examination of the acquired culture thus imposed upon family, friends and associates, and is divided into three sections: an overview of communication and culture, identifying the role of intercultural analysis to this problem area; an analysis of eight cultural variables identified by Porter and Samovar …

The Effects Of Extracurricular Activities On Student Achievement And Success, Timothy J. Means Jan 1991

The Effects Of Extracurricular Activities On Student Achievement And Success, Timothy J. Means

Graduate Research Papers

"Participation in extracurricular activities at the expense of academic learning time has become an issue in education. Decisions limiting or curtailing these activities are made on the assumption that they interfere with the primary purpose of education. If sound decisions are to be made regarding balance between formal instruction and extracurricular activities, we must determine whether they enhance or hinder learning. In other words, are they an integral part of a meaningful educational curriculum for adolescents, or a superficial distraction from it?" (Haensly, Lupkowski & Edlind, 1986) In 1984, Hall, Rutherford, Hord and Huling reported that the co/extracurriculum, which represents …

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Clemmons], Deborah Clemmons Jan 1991

Issue Four: Coping With And Addressing Racism In Our Educational Institutions [Clemmons], Deborah Clemmons

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Racism, for the purpose of this position paper, is defined as the systematic exclusion of a group of people based on race. Exclusion means the manipulation of policies, procedures, and structures which cause the miseducation of children of color, limiting their ability to participate effectively in the society. Effective participation in society means the ability to acquire gainful employment and provide for social, psychological, and economic needs.

Response To "The Case For A Right To Reply," By James Darsey, James Darsey Jan 1991

Response To "The Case For A Right To Reply," By James Darsey, James Darsey

Iowa Journal of Communication

With the essay "The Case for the Right to Reply," the author enters into the important and captious debate over what to do about "hate speech," specifically on college campuses. As a former Affirmative Action Officer for the Speech Communication Association and as organizer and chair of a recent SCA panel on this very subject, I am in sympathy with the undertaking. There is the persistent notion among well-meaning people that "hate speech," as indicated by its designation, is sui generis and, considered as such, is eligible for special treatment.

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler Jan 1991

Small Group Counseling For Stepchildren In Elementary School, Margaret K. Oler

Graduate Research Papers

Children who are members of stepfamilies are an increasing segment of our nation's school population, and their numbers may be expected to grow in the next decade (Crosbie-Burnett & Pulvino, 1990). Some demographers predict that as many as one-third of all children born in the 1980s may live with a stepparent before they are 18 (Kantrowitz & Wingert, 1990). A stepchild is defined as a child whose biological parent has remarried or married someone other than the child's other biological parent. Historically school policies and practices have related to students' families with the assumption that all two-parent families were nuclear, …

A Comprehensive Approach To Dropout Prevention Programs, Nancy A. Reising-Prohaska Jan 1991

A Comprehensive Approach To Dropout Prevention Programs, Nancy A. Reising-Prohaska

Graduate Research Papers

Educators have begun to focus on the "third wave" of reform, the prevention of dropouts (Hill, 1987). The first two waves of reform which took place during the 1970 1s and 1980's focused heavily on how to improve teaching--which ultimately led to higher standards in academic performance. These standards, along with a variety of other factors, have increased the population of "potential dropouts." Beck and Muia (1985) agree that the first two reforms had the unintended result of leaving further behind the students most in need of help in meeting higher standards. Therefore, the third reform taking place in the …

The Portrayal Of Sexual Abuse In Young Adult Literature, Mary Oelmann

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this content analysis was to determine how the characters who are victims of sexual abuse are portrayed in young adult literature. This study examined the characteristics of the child who has been sexually abused, the abuser, and the home structure of the victim.

Eleven novels, published and reviewed since 1980, were analyzed for content. The researcher used standard recommending journals and bibliographies to identify possible novels for analysis. Books selected had a focus on sexual abuse.

The researcher found incest to be the main type of sexual abuse in 64% of the novels. The majority of the …

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

"What are the major problems facing youth and what can be done to better prepare youth organizations to address these challenges?" are the topics of a discussion roundtable of a diverse group of community leaders. They addressed specific points of concern to the youth development professionals, including the major problems facing youth, the professional development training needs, and the training needs that might be addressed because of limited financial resources. The roundtable group set the stage for the Symposium discussions that took place the following day. The many and variety perspectives the group brought to the issues in question provided …

Middle Woodland Field Camps In The Cedar Valley, Michael J. Perry Jan 1991

Middle Woodland Field Camps In The Cedar Valley, Michael J. Perry

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Archaeological survey and testing of two proposed road projects within the Cedar River valley resulted in the location of several prehistoric occupational sites. Ceramics recovered at three of the sites, 13LN226, 13LN236, and 13LN243, are identified as late Middle Woodland period specimens, dating to ca. A.D. 200. The three sites border Cedar River tributaries, occupying high terrace formations within the broad bottomlands of the Cedar valley. The type and distribution of artifacts suggest that 13LN236 and 13LN243 functioned as repeatedly utilized, short-term extractive and processing camps. Previous research at sites of similar age focused on small, protected rockshelters and large, …

Andragogy And Community College Education: An Analysis Of The Importance Of Enhancing Self-Concept/Self-Esteem In The Nontraditional Student, Nancy Billings Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research paper was to explore the characteristics and needs of the nontraditional, American adult students attending community colleges. The paper argues that enhancing the self-concept and self-esteem of the nontraditional, adult student fosters and increases his/her academic success and life chances. The literature review first focused on the history, description, philosophy, purpose, and mission of community colleges. In order to adequately explore issues with the nontraditional student, a review of the literature on adult development was incorporated. Then, the paper described the unique characteristics of the nontraditional, adult student, who tends to enroll in community colleges. …

Egocentrism And Adolescent Development, Rodney Payne Jan 1991

Egocentrism And Adolescent Development, Rodney Payne

Graduate Research Papers

The behavior of adolescents can be very challenging to parents and educators. These young people have the ability to change moods and behavior day to day, with their emotions being up or down at any given moment. Also, they are often confused and look for security in their turbulent world. Their inconsistency in behavior and emotions tests the patience and understanding of adults who try to guide and direct them through these hectic years. According to Newman (1985) adolescence has been characterized as a period of inevitable stress and conflict, with adults almost helpless to intervene productively.

Influences Associated With The Underrepresentation Of Women In Administrative Positions In Education, Judy S. Bohrofen Jan 1991

Influences Associated With The Underrepresentation Of Women In Administrative Positions In Education, Judy S. Bohrofen

Graduate Research Papers

Women are greatly underrepresented in administrative positions at all levels of education. In spite of all the efforts that have been made to recruit women into, and to encourage women to seek, traditionally male-dominated careers, the statistics continue to be discouraging. Nationally, five percent of school superintendents are women, a 1989 National School Boards Association survey found. Only 10 percent of high school principals are women, 17 percent of junior high and middle school principals are women, and 32 percent of elementary school principals are women (Lanter, 1989). A September 30, 1990 fiscal year report of Iowa public universities showed …

The Whole Language Approach To Reading Instruction: Strategies That Enhance Comprehension, Frances J. Pleak Jan 1991

The Whole Language Approach To Reading Instruction: Strategies That Enhance Comprehension, Frances J. Pleak

Graduate Research Papers

The report of the National Commission on Excellence in Education,~ Nation at Risk (1983) focused the nation's attention on problems in our educational system. One of the reactions from the publication was a concern to improve literacy in the United States by improving current practices in reading instruction. Becoming~ Nation of Readers, a widely publicized report issued in 1985 by the Commission on Reading, was an outcome of this concern about current reading practices. An important finding of this two year study was that much is already known about how children learn to read, but this knowledge is not being …

Newspapers In The Classroom: Why Should Educators Use Them?, Lisa M. Stone Jan 1991

Newspapers In The Classroom: Why Should Educators Use Them?, Lisa M. Stone

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review is to learn 4 why educators should use newspapers in their classrooms. Are newspapers educational tools that can be easily used in the classroom for building skills? How difficult is it to incorporate them into the content areas? Can newspapers be used to help develop global awareness? How can newspapers promote critical thinking? Is the main goal of the Newspapers in Education program, to develop informed and concerned citizens (Skover, 1983; Rhoades & Rhoades, 1985), being met through the use of newspapers in the schools? And finally, what research evidence is there to support …

A Survey And Analysis Of Potential Uses Of The Computer In The Social Studies Classroom, Mike Healy Jan 1991

A Survey And Analysis Of Potential Uses Of The Computer In The Social Studies Classroom, Mike Healy

Graduate Research Papers

The computer has become an integral tool in education. In math classes, in business education classes, in computer literacy classes, the computer is a well-accepted tool of instruction. However, computers have been slow to enter most Social Studies classrooms, including my classroom. Should the computer be used in the Social Studies classroom? What would be an effective use of computers in the classroom? Would the computer be the best tool for that unit of instruction?

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen Jan 1991

Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. Recent attempts to measure the effects of technology on social relationships are critiqued, particularly in their inadequate conceptualization and operationalization, confusion of cause and …

Cooperative Learning: Is It The Approach For The Minorities, Helen E. Wright Jan 1991

Cooperative Learning: Is It The Approach For The Minorities, Helen E. Wright

Graduate Research Papers

Cooperative learning ls a teaching strategy whereby students work together in teams to produce a group project or master a unit of study (Slavin, 1983). The teacher acts as a facilitator of knowledge, not the direct purveyor of information. Students are responsible for their own learning under the teacher/s general guidelines. They set up time frames, assign tasks within the group, and gather their own research.

Computers In Post-Secondary Vocational Business Education, Carole Margery Maske Jan 1991

Computers In Post-Secondary Vocational Business Education, Carole Margery Maske

Graduate Research Papers

According to Naisbitt <1982) in Megatrends, contemporary life is an everyday encounter with computer technology. When a person wakes in the morning, it is often to the sound of an alarm programmed the previous night. A person answering the phone receives a call relayed through a computer system. Programs produced for television are often combined with visual effects produced through computer enhancement. As people review their mail. many of the bills and letters have been produced with the aid of computers. Merchandise purchased at many stores is checked out using a computer to read and register the price of the items being purchased. Many students attending our schools wear watches that act as miniature computer calculators. Doctors. lawyers, engineers, politicians. accountants, bankers, farmers. and the entire scope of the business world have come to rely on computers.

A Descriptive Study Of Perceived-Effective Rural Superintendents In The State Of Iowa, Bonnie Korver Baum Jan 1991

A Descriptive Study Of Perceived-Effective Rural Superintendents In The State Of Iowa, Bonnie Korver Baum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The nature of the superintendent's responsibilities has changed significantly since the first school superintendent in the United States was hired in the 1830s. Superintendents today have a great influence on education. That influence is felt in rural schools as well as urban and suburban districts. Rural schools have certain unique administrative problems. Solving those problems depends on the vision, leadership, and effectiveness of the administration.

The purpose of this study was to identify selected characteristics of effective rural superintendents. Five rural Iowa superintendents, identified as effective by their peers, were studied in depth. The qualitative dissertation identified characteristics in four …

The Importance Of Theatre In Secondary Education, Monica L. Franzen Jan 1991

The Importance Of Theatre In Secondary Education, Monica L. Franzen

Undergraduate Student Work

With the many cutbacks in the educational system, school administrators are struggling with the decision of what co-curricular and extracurricular areas should be cut or reduced and what should remain unchanged. What should be kept or cut from the fine arts has been a controversial issue in schools for many years. It still remains a critical problem today and in the near future, faces the chance of elimination from the curriculum.

Theatre is important in the educational system. I base my argument on my own perceptions, various texts, and through personal interviews. Many of the interviewees reinforced or extended my …
