An Overview Of Black-White Interracial Marriage: Implications For Counselors, Lisa A. Fossadal Jan 1995

An Overview Of Black-White Interracial Marriage: Implications For Counselors, Lisa A. Fossadal

Graduate Research Papers

Nothing would infuriate many White parents more than the thought of their offspring marrying a Black person. No other mixture touches off such widespread condemnation as Black-White mixing. Historically, Black-White interracial marriage has been the most controversial of all types of intermarriage in the United states (McLemore, 1991). In order to maintain their cohesiveness and identity, many groups have explicit rules about who may marry whom, groups such as Africans, Asians, some Europeans and even some Americans. These constraints on intermarriage may be based on religious, political, cultural, social class, and/or racial-ethnic differences (Clayton, 1979). Although changes have occurred over …

Teacher Self-Efficacy: Nature, Associated Factors, And Impact On Students, Lisa Marie Bries Jan 1995

Teacher Self-Efficacy: Nature, Associated Factors, And Impact On Students, Lisa Marie Bries

Graduate Research Papers

Dropouts are one of the most visible failures of our current educational system. Their presence is painfully obvious and extremely costly when considered in terms of public expenditure and wasted potential (DeBlois, 1989). One of the brightest options for addressing this societal malady is that of assigning troubled students to alternative schools. These high schools have become a widely used method of dealing with the problem of placement for dropout students and students at-risk for dropping out who seem unable or unwilling to function in regular education classrooms. Those students considered to be at-risk are able to be identified by …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Trikelle M. Otkins

Graduate Research Papers

Upon deciding to become an elementary school administrator, I came to a frightening conclusion that I might be one of the key elements in the school that may determine the success or failure of all students. It will be my demeanor that would help to create the climate. It will be my daily mood that helps set the 1 tone. I could be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I could humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In a variety of situations, it will be my response that decides whether a crisis would be escalated or deescalated. …

A Review Of The Literature On Stepfamilies: An Investigation Of Past And Current Trends, Christy L. Johnson Jan 1995

A Review Of The Literature On Stepfamilies: An Investigation Of Past And Current Trends, Christy L. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Stepfamilies are an increasing reality in our society. As recently as 1976, it was estimated that as few as 10% of all U.S. children under 18 lived in stepparent households (Nelson & Nelson, 1982). In 1986 approximately 50% of first marriages were ending in divorce, and 65% of divorced women and 70% of divorced men were remarrying (Glick & Lin, 1986). It is clear that stepfamilies have changed from being an alternative family form to becoming a predominant family form (Duberman, 1975; Glick, 1991; Visher & Visher, 1988,1990) and is the fastest growing form of family in the United States …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joy Michelle Kelly Jan 1995

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joy Michelle Kelly

Graduate Research Papers

My educational experiences from childhood are truly what motivated me to become a teacher, and I revisit some of those same experiences as I reflect upon my intentions to become a high school principal. I truly believe that I became a teacher because I knew I could have an impact on young people, both academically and personally, and ultimately I could make a difference in their lives. My personal experiences with the educational system have not always been positive, but, nonetheless, they have been motivating.

Adolescent Sexuality: The Role Of Parents, School, And Counselor, Steven A. Montross Jan 1995

Adolescent Sexuality: The Role Of Parents, School, And Counselor, Steven A. Montross

Graduate Research Papers

The rate of teenage sexual involvement is at an all-time high. It is estimated that 11.6 million teenagers between the ages 13-19 have had sexual intercourse, resulting in over 800,000 teenage pregnancies each year. With statistics such as these, problems arise: sexually active teens are at risk for contracting diseases such as AIDS, teenage mothers may often drop out of school, and many teen mothers live in poverty (Christopher & Roosa, 1990). In addition, children learn facts about sex at younger ages than did their parents and grandparents. On the positive side, there is the increasing maternal effort to impart …

Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy Jan 1995

Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy

Graduate Research Papers

Acts of student violence in the schools are increasing (Chance, 1990; Crosby, 1993; Rich, 1992; Urben, 1986), especially in the larger cities in the United States (Hellman & Beaton, 1986). These acts of violence include violence toward other students as well as toward the school personnel and property. In this paper I will discuss selected aspects of violence in the schools. More specifically, I discuss the prevalence of violence in the schools, school based interventions and implications for the practice of school psychologists.

Student Questions: Can They Lead To More Active Involvement In The Learning Process?, Marjorie L. Miller Jan 1995

Student Questions: Can They Lead To More Active Involvement In The Learning Process?, Marjorie L. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

The need for children to be actively involved in learning has become more obvious and prevalent in the elementary school. The difficulty seen in my inner city school of 650 students in pre-school through sixth grade is that while there is, indeed, a lot of activity occurring in classrooms, the most needy students are not the ones who are actively involved. While most students are actively learning, some students purposely try to disengage themselves from learning (Vacca & Padak, 1990). At the same time teachers are trying to engage them in the learning process so that they will understand and …

An Analysis Of Racial Bias In Revocation Rates Among Felony Probationers In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Ross Thomas Todd Jan 1995

An Analysis Of Racial Bias In Revocation Rates Among Felony Probationers In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Ross Thomas Todd

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The probation revocation hearing is one of many decision points in the legal system. Some probation violators are revoked from probation supervision and ordered to serve a prison sentence, while others are given another chance to successfully complete their period of supervision. Some legal scholars and researchers believe systematic racial discrimination occurs in the justice system, while others maintain that all criminal defendants are treated the same regardless of race. This does not mean that race never plays a role, only that it is idiosyncratic rather than systematic. The results of previous studies of the effects of race on judicial …

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson Jan 1995

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

he purpose of the present study was to identify the accuracy of sentence imitation and code-switching by the African-American child between the ages of 6 years O months and 7 years 2 months. Despite well documented descriptions of Black English (BE) phonology (Dillard, 1972; Labov, 1972; Wolfram & Fasold, 1974), little has been published about the emerging phonology of BE speaking children. Most descriptive studies of BE have focused on the adult system.

The present study investigated the following research questions, "Will African-American children in this study, when presented with the task of imitating BE and IE sentences, code-switch each …

Parent, Teacher, And Peer Expectations: How They Are Perceived By Academically Gifted Preadolescent Males And Females, Bobbe Sutton Jan 1995

Parent, Teacher, And Peer Expectations: How They Are Perceived By Academically Gifted Preadolescent Males And Females, Bobbe Sutton

Graduate Research Papers

This study examined the perceptions of a group of preadolescent males and females who were enrolled in academic replacement programs. The targeted issues were the expectations of parents, teachers, and peers as they related to the students' giftedness. Data were collected using a questionnaire and results were compared by gender. Both males and females expressed that parents, teachers, and peers outside the classroom held exaggerated expectations. Males, much more than females, perceived inflated expectations from parents. The impact of these findings on gifted programming is discussed and recommendations are made for further research and for the continued development of comprehensive …

The Generation Gap: A Comparison Of The Negative Portrayals Of Hippies And Generation Xers, Greg Becker Jan 1995

The Generation Gap: A Comparison Of The Negative Portrayals Of Hippies And Generation Xers, Greg Becker

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The term "generation gap" is usually used to describe a situation in which a division develops between generations. The tension results from one generation, usually the younger generation, possessing a set of values and beliefs that are consistently different from the values and beliefs of another generation, usually the older generation. A comparison of newspaper articles concerning both Hippies and Generation Xers was conducted to illustrate the contention that generational conflict occurs in a cyclical pattern with each successive generation. The older generation usually portrays the younger generation in a negative manner. Articles from both The New York Times and …

Are Learning Disabilities Discovered Or Constructed: The Unintended Consequences And Failures Of Realism As The Philosophical Basis Of Learning Disabilities Theory, Nicole C. Buhl Jan 1995

Are Learning Disabilities Discovered Or Constructed: The Unintended Consequences And Failures Of Realism As The Philosophical Basis Of Learning Disabilities Theory, Nicole C. Buhl

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The historical and current conceptualization of learning disabilities was analyzed in terms of its underlying assumptions and guiding paradigms. It was determined that since its beginning, the field of learning disabilities has been dominated by the traditional realist perspective under the mechanistic paradigm. It was argued that such a perspective is inadequate in the field of learning disabilities. A nonrealist perspective as part of a holistic paradigm was suggested as more appropriate for the conceptualization of learning disabilities.

Subpopulation Heterogeneity And Statistical Unreliability In Forensic Dna Typing, Nick Craig Jan 1995

Subpopulation Heterogeneity And Statistical Unreliability In Forensic Dna Typing, Nick Craig

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This paper consists of an overview of the procedures and criticisms involved in current forensic DNA typing. The opening presents a brief introduction to the genetic characteristics of DNA, followed by a review of the typing procedure. The main emphasis of the paper is the criticisms of the current procedure. These criticisms include an attack on the independence assumption and its justification of the use of the multiplication rule in calculating test results. A number of experts have proposed that heterogeneity within ethnic subpopulations may significantly undermine the independence assumption and render invalid the use of the multiplication rule. Others …

Interactional Ritual Chains: Creation And Maintenance Of Power On A Brain Injury Ward, Perry C. Goodman Jan 1995

Interactional Ritual Chains: Creation And Maintenance Of Power On A Brain Injury Ward, Perry C. Goodman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research was to identify how participants created and maintained the relational dimension of power during interaction ritual processes on a brain injury ward. Power is defined as relational indicating that relationships between individuals are necessary in order for power to exist. These relationships, according to Kemper and Collins, occur at the micro level and provide the "glue and the dynamics" of the social structure. The research took place at a health care facility in the Midwest. The participants included ten patients and fifteen employees. The participants provided a rich source of lived experiences through their interpretation …
