Treatment And Intervention Strategies For Battered Women : Breaking The Cycle Of Violence, Hope L. Huff Jan 1999

Treatment And Intervention Strategies For Battered Women : Breaking The Cycle Of Violence, Hope L. Huff

Graduate Research Papers

Partner violence is now understood to affect at least 8.7 million women per year (Roberts, 1998). As a result of the chronic abuse, many women suffer from psychological disorders requiring professional help. A large percentage of battered women demonstrate symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and somatic complaints (Margolin & Burman, 1993; Yegidis, 1992). Treatment and intervention strategies will be introduced for both individual and group therapy, based primarily on cognitive approaches.

Studying Your Enemy: Ethical Guidelines For Online Research, Todd J. Schroer Jan 1999

Studying Your Enemy: Ethical Guidelines For Online Research, Todd J. Schroer

Iowa Journal of Communication

In the expanding field of studying computer-mediated interactions, the ethical implications of conducting research ming human subjects are an inherent issue. These ethical concerns are increased when the population under study is a relatively powerless, marginalized, and highly persecuted group. The ethical problems are further compounded when the researcher does not share in the world-view, or goals of the research subjects. Since 1992, I have med computers to monitor, contact, and interview White Racialists {sic} in order to combat their efforts. However, this does not relieve me of my ethical obligations as a sociologist: to protect my subjects, to fully …

Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas Jan 1999

Balanacing The Ethical Conundrums Of Internet Research: An Existentialist View From The Trenches, Jim Thomas

Iowa Journal of Communication

The fundamental ethical questions posed by new technology are not new. Basic beliefs in the precept that it is better to do good than ill do not change. What changes is that relationship between behaviors and the ethical conceptions by which we judge them shift and become ambiguous, vague, and perceived through a sometimes foggy prism. The problem for those involved in Net activity, then is not one of defining new ethical principles or revising or identifying new categorical imperatives. Our task instead is one of understanding the social bases of the relationship between technology and conflicts over the meaning …

This information can help mental health professionals and school counselors understand the impact of living through the experience of …

Anger, Racism, And Anger Management Therapy With African American Adolescents, Rachel A. Dennis Jan 1999

Anger, Racism, And Anger Management Therapy With African American Adolescents, Rachel A. Dennis

Graduate Research Papers

Increasingly, much of the stress people in the United States experience is due to societal disorder and social pressures (Jenkins, 1982). Racial strife, violence, unemployment, hunger, and housing shortages among other problems, are examples of societal disorder" and are symptoms of the "sickness" of our society that contribute to the chronic anger that many people experience on a daily basis. The concept of social emotional process describes how a prolonged increase in social anxiety can result in a gradual lowering of the functional level of families (Nichols & Schwartz, 1995). Nichols & Schwartz (1995) cite the example of the high …

Conceptualizing Narrative Structures And Institutions: A Case Study Of Institutional Closings In Detroit, David R. Maines, Jeffery C. Bridger Jan 1999

Conceptualizing Narrative Structures And Institutions: A Case Study Of Institutional Closings In Detroit, David R. Maines, Jeffery C. Bridger

Iowa Journal of Communication

We address the pervasive problem in narrative inquiry of linking personal to collective stories. Our approach is to distinguish stories as personal accounts from narrative structures that are cultural frames. We examined the relations between the two, and argue that narrative structures in many ways prefigure personal stories. We then present data pertaining to the closings of three Detroit institutions: Hudson's Department Store, the Fleetwood Cadillac Plant, and local parishes of the Detroit Archdiocese. With these data, we suggest that narrative structures also may well be linked to social institutions.

Graduate Research Papers

The focus of the present study is to describe the relationship between leisure and spirituality in the process of reviewing related literature and speculating about the quote from the 46th Psalm, "Have leisure and know that I am God," using a philosophical method (an argument style specifically). Although the argument will be based on a line of Psalm from the Old Testament, the intention of this argument is not to critique or interpret the tradition of Biblical thoughts. This will entail looking at four key points: 1) mystical and transcendental experiences; 2) the contrast between the classic Greek concept of …

Juvenile Justice Professionals And The Goal Of Rehabilitation, Heather Bruch Jan 1999

Juvenile Justice Professionals And The Goal Of Rehabilitation, Heather Bruch

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Numerous studies conducted over the past 20 years have suggested that support for rehabilitation in the criminal justice system has decreased. As a result of these findings, an increase in the examination of support for rehabilitation has occurred. According to much of the research on this issue, an important factor in the support of rehabilitation is the attitudes of criminal justice workers. The increasing prison populations are partially responsible for the heightened interest in this issue. It is believed by many that the attitudes of the workers in the criminal justice system have an effect on the success of the …

Dramaturgical Perspective In Modern Police Work : An Analysis Of Interviews And Observations, Michael P. Wagner Jan 1999

Dramaturgical Perspective In Modern Police Work : An Analysis Of Interviews And Observations, Michael P. Wagner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Using a qualitative approach, I analyze data collected from two small Midwestern police departments. I gathered this data through a combination of methods: ethnographic interviewing, participant observation, and content analysis of police artifacts and documents. Most of the data derive from (1) my ethnographic interviews of 17 police officers and (2) my observations of officers during 16 "ride-along."

My analyses are guided by Goffman's (1959) dramaturgical analysis of face-to-face interaction, Manning's (1971; 1977) dramaturgical approach to policing, and Hunt and Manning's (1991) dramaturgical studies of police lying and the use of normal force (see also Hunt 1985). I rely most …

Gender, Religion, Causal Attributions, And Correctional Orientations Among Juvenile Justice Personnel, Amy Lynn Lyons

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine the attitudes and orientations of juvenile justice personnel from four urban counties within the state of Iowa. The nonrandom sample used in the present study is secondary and originally collected for a larger study conducted by Leiber (1993). A closed-ended, self-report survey was administered to each respondent. The total sample for the present research is 263. The hypotheses guiding the present study are based on the assumption that women experience religion differently from men, and in turn, will blame society for youth crime and favor orientations supporting diversion.

Virtual Sociology: Using Computers In Research, Diane K. Wysocki

Iowa Journal of Communication

This article explores my introduction into virtual research. In this article I discuss the ethical issues associated with conducting research online, such as whether or not informed consents are necessary, how to obtain them, what kinds of methods are ethical, how to handle data, and how to ensure respondents confidentially. Furthermore, I address both the positive and negative aspects of virtual research, some basic guidelines for institutional Review Boards, and the more current phenomena of online publishing in academic journals.
