Relationship Between Selected Health Behaviors Practiced And Health Behaviors Encouraged In Instruction Provided By School Health Educators, Terri Long Jedlicka

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the personal health practices of school health educators endorsed by the Iowa Department of Education to determine if their health practices were consistent with the formal health education instruction they provided. A health education questionnaire and health risk appraisal, designed to obtain information about the personal health practices and formal instruction provided, were sent to a sample of 200 randomly selected school health educators endorsed by the Iowa Department of Education. There were 106 usable responses for a 53% return rate. The majority of the participants in this study were females in …

Field Dependence-Independence And Sports With A Preponderance Of Closed Or Open Skills, Wenhao Liu Jan 1997

Field Dependence-Independence And Sports With A Preponderance Of Closed Or Open Skills, Wenhao Liu

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The focus of much research on field dependence-independence in sport settings has been on the relationship of field dependence-independence to sports with a preponderance of closed or open skills since 1970s. Although most of the previous research supported the claim that field dependence is of greater advantage to sports with a preponderance of open skills and field independence an advantage to sports with a preponderance of closed skills, several studies provided inconsistent and contradictory results. In addition, few of those studies involved adequate sports and sample size and some used a different sport classification. Little comparison, if any, of field …

A Review Of The History And Development Of Emeritus Status At The University Of Northern Iowa And Its Predecessor Institutions, 1876-1996, Ross A. Nielsen

History of Education Book Gallery

The names of 443 individuals are listed in this publication, all faculty members or administrators for whom I found evidence that emeritus status had been conferred, or that they had fulfilled the emeritus eligibility qualifications operating on the university campus at the time of completion of their active professional careers. I make no claim that this is an all-inclusive list. Listings found in catalogs and bulletins are incomplete. There is no source for identifying deceased emeriti. Prior to 1981, institutional policy did not require retiring or resigning faculty or administrators to apply for emeritus status; upon completion of twenty years …

Assertiveness Training For Women, Carol L. Charles Jan 1996

Assertiveness Training For Women, Carol L. Charles

Graduate Research Papers

Women, who make up more than half the human population, face developmental experiences that traditional human development theories inadequately explain or address. Practitioners treating women have had to choose between traditional-individualistic and feminist-relational models of development. The broader implication of this theoretical choice is either the valuation or devaluation of feminine gender traits. Thus, interventions would likely vary along with underlying philosophy as would the practitioner's view of developmental wellness; This fact and related concerns are the foci of this paper.

Influential Factors In Chinese American Culture: Implications For Counselors, Lisa L. Whitsett Jan 1996

Influential Factors In Chinese American Culture: Implications For Counselors, Lisa L. Whitsett

Graduate Research Papers

The core of responsibility regarding counseling, according to Ivey, Ivey, and Simek-Morgan (1993), is to "do nothing that will harm the client or society" (p. 15). Along with this belief, the authors suggest that counselors must always be aware of clients' individual and cultural differences. As counselors in the field become more knowledgeable regarding treatment, they are recognizing that a lack of cultural awareness restricts their ability to apply counseling theories to multicultural issues.

Aggression In Young Children, Lin-Yu Huang Jan 1996

Aggression In Young Children, Lin-Yu Huang

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is three-fold: (1) to review the definitions and methodologies cased in the study of aggression; (2) to review research on aggression in children; and (3) identify recommendations for reducing aggression. This paper is motivated largely by fears regarding the influence of aggression on children. Increases in aggression among children may create larger social problems in the future.

Career Services For African-American College Students In Predominantly White Institutions, Angelle Shaunette Wallace Jan 1996

Career Services For African-American College Students In Predominantly White Institutions, Angelle Shaunette Wallace

Graduate Research Papers

As an aspiring student affairs professional with a specific interest in Placement and Career Services, it is troubling to note the lack of conscious efforts to facilitate the career development needs of African American college students in predominantly white institutions. Unfortunately, some career counselors lack knowledge of the African-American students' historical background, cultural orientation, and aspirations. In addition, being unaware of what empowers African-American college students, some career counselors in predominantly white institutions are ineffective in designing appropriate programs that would ultimately facilitate African-American college students' career development needs.

Speech Codes In Higher Education, Tammy Sue Stroschein Jan 1996

Speech Codes In Higher Education, Tammy Sue Stroschein

Graduate Research Papers

Over the past two decades, American colleges and universities have grown increasingly diverse in their student bodies. Every racial and ethnic background is being represented in higher education today. Administrators at many public universities and colleges have noticed an increase in discriminatory expression and harassment toward these groups. According to Stains(1993), one-quarter of all minority students are victimized by prejudice each year. For this reason and others, many administrators across the nation have adopted speech codes and have debated the efficacy of these codes. Due to the debate, speech codes at public universities and colleges have received much legal and …

Disaster Mental Health Response, Roberta J. Hinman Jan 1996

Disaster Mental Health Response, Roberta J. Hinman

Graduate Research Papers

Following a natural disaster, most survivors rarely disintegrate and become incapable of coping; however, many are affected and may need significant community assistance (Fischer, 1993). After a natural disaster, many people will be repairing, rebuilding and attempting to resume their lives. Often relief agencies originally brought in to help will have left the effected community. When disaster strikes or threatens destruction, individuals may need mental health services to relieve stress, especially if survivors seem to experiencing a shattered sense of the world as a safe and meaningful place (Janoff-Bulman, 1992). Then what happens to individuals who did not get enough …

A Critical Overview Of Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse: Recognition Of Symptomology And The Efficacy Of Group Treatment, Laurie J. Belz Jan 1996

A Critical Overview Of Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse: Recognition Of Symptomology And The Efficacy Of Group Treatment, Laurie J. Belz

Graduate Research Papers

This paper provides the reader with knowledge of symptomology and a profile of the effects of intrafamilial sexual abuse on survivors of this devastating experience. This work provides a brief overview of group therapy as an effective remedial treatment for this population. This type of abuse, considered taboo in American society, is often kept secret. However, it is a highly prevalent social problem, affecting at least one third of the population (McFarlane, Waterman, Conerly, Damon, Durfee, & Long, 1986). Considering the prevalence and secrecy of this phenomenon, it is extremely important that mental health professionals are able to identify possible …

Anger And Violence In Elementary Schools: Conflict Resolution As A Method Of Prevention, Janae A. Griffith Jan 1996

Anger And Violence In Elementary Schools: Conflict Resolution As A Method Of Prevention, Janae A. Griffith

Graduate Research Papers

One of the most significant problems facing our country is violent crime. In the last few years, violent crime by children and adolescents rose dramatically (Wilde, 1995). "Currently more than half of all serious crimes ( e.g. murder, rape, assault, robbery) in the United States are committed by youths age 10-1 7" (Shulman, 1996, p. 170). Newscasts and daily newspapers are full of reports regarding youth violence.

Guidelines For A Successful Preschool Integration Program, Lori M. Nurse

Graduate Research Papers

In this review, "Guidelines for a Successful Preschool Integrated Program", literature on the integration of preschool children with and without disabilities was reviewed and the following questions were addressed: What are the benefits and barriers of preschool integration; and what guidelines are necessary to make an integration program successful? The benefits of preschool integration include: social skills; understanding and accepting differences; real-life experiences; being a role model; and the utilization of community resources. The barriers of preschool integration are the following: staff training and teacher preparation; staff-child ratio; negative attitudes and lack of awareness; lack of research supporting academic effects; …
