Brain Potentials During Silent And Oral Reading, John R. Knott Jan 1937

Brain Potentials During Silent And Oral Reading, John R. Knott

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Brain potentials have been recorded during silence, during silent reading, and oral reading. While it has been assumed that potentials cannot be picked up during strong, complex stimulation, the results indicate that they can be. Analysis of the data indicates a hypothesis to the effect that complexity of cortical functioning is associated with complexity of the electrical activity of the cortex.

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown Jan 1937

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study reported in the Quarterly Journal of Speech (November, 1935) showed the existence of a phonetic factor of difficulty affecting the occurrence of stuttering spasms. Further analysis of the data on which the previous work was based has revealed a grammatical factor of difficulty. This is more consistent, but does not seem to be as important as the phonetic factor.

The Mental Development Of Children Of The Same I.Q. In Differing Institutional Environments, Orlo D. Crissey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mental development of children of the same mental level in relation to residence in institutional environments of differing mental level. The subjects consist of children resident in four Iowa childrens' institutions. They were selected from a large number of children who had been given individual tests, and who were resident in these institutions between an initial test and one or more retests. The Stanford and Kuhlmann Revisions of the Binet Scale were used for all individual tests, and were administered by well-trained examiners as a part of the cooperative program between …

Do University And College Students Have Dislike Or Affection For Their Parents? An Attitude Scale For Personnel Procedures, Earle E. Emme Jan 1937

Do University And College Students Have Dislike Or Affection For Their Parents? An Attitude Scale For Personnel Procedures, Earle E. Emme

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An understanding of the adjustment problems of university and college students reveals that many factors 2 are involved in student adjustment. To be sure, academic courses still constitute the main show for many students. Other students are very much interested in the so-called side shows, such as athletics, social relationships, economic and religious situations, the library, boarding and rooming conditions, as well as personal contacts with teachers in and out of classes, counselors and administrative officers. Consequently many students find themselves in a totality of campus on-rush, the roots and outreaches of which are not always known or understood.

Central Determinants Of Peripheral Manifestations In Reading, Grant Fairbanks, Joseph Tiffin Jan 1936

Central Determinants Of Peripheral Manifestations In Reading, Grant Fairbanks, Joseph Tiffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous investigations have shown that poor reading is accompanied by irregularities in the eye-movements of the reader. The most marked of these is regressive movement, that is, backward movement of the eyes to places previously looked at. Clinicians in remedial reading have been much struck by the presence of these irregularities, and have sometimes attempted to improve reading by treating the eye-movements as such. The question investigated by this research is: Do irregular eye-movements cause poor reading, or does poor reading cause irregular eye-movements? If poor reading is shown to be the cause of poor eye-movements, then it is obviously …

Factors Influencing The Frequency Of Stuttering Reactions, Robert Larsen Jan 1936

Factors Influencing The Frequency Of Stuttering Reactions, Robert Larsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain, in terms of frequency of stuttering reactions, the influence of stuttering experienced in certain troublesome situations upon the stutterer's speech in non-troublesome situations, when certain cues representative of the former are also present in the latter. It is further the purpose of this study to show the influence of certain cues representative of troublesome words upon the stutterer's production of non-troublesome words, when the cues are associated with both kinds of words.

A Tachistoscopic Study Of Aesthetic Perception, Gilbert Brighouse Jan 1936

A Tachistoscopic Study Of Aesthetic Perception, Gilbert Brighouse

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the characteristic development of the perception of a painting for both artistically trained and untrained individuals. The method consisted in a series of brief exposures (165 sigma) of each of ten paintings, representing a wide range of "schools" of art. Six of the ten were colored reproductions. Exposures were repeated until the observer himself was satisfied that he had perceived the picture completely. To date results have been obtained on 60 observers (16 trained adults - graduate students and members of the faculty of the Department of Graphic Art - 24 untrained …

Time Characteristics In The Word-Association Test, Harold M. Williams Jan 1936

Time Characteristics In The Word-Association Test, Harold M. Williams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been repeatedly demonstrated that the word-association test empirically differentiates normals from delinquents and psychopaths, as well as a state of emotional calm from one of apprehension in a given subject. It is still relevant, however, to inquire more deeply, if possible, into the psychological nature of the process.

Pitch Perception Of Frequency Glides, Don Lewis, Grant Fairbanks Jan 1936

Pitch Perception Of Frequency Glides, Don Lewis, Grant Fairbanks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A rising or falling frequency glide at the end of a sustained tone is perceived as being of greater extent and longer duration than the identical physical phenomenon occurring at the beginning of the tone. This is true for both complex and pure tones, with intensity constant or varying.

The Organization Of Function In The Delinquent, Newell C. Kephart Jan 1936

The Organization Of Function In The Delinquent, Newell C. Kephart

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The thesis in this study was that juvenile delinquents display personality defects which may be described as disorganization of the mental data. Such disorganization is thought of as a disconnectedness between the elements of the psychic material. It is thought that delinquent subjects as a group will give evidence in performance of less dynamic dependency among these data than will non-delinquent subjects as a group.

The Adaptation And Variability Of Response Of The Human Brain, B. K. Bagchi Jan 1936

The Adaptation And Variability Of Response Of The Human Brain, B. K. Bagchi

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Electrical potentials have been recorded from the brain of five normal human subjects by means of needle electrodes inserted about half a centimeter through the scalp, one near the external occipital protuberance and another about three inches forward and an inch to the side from the median line. The high time-constant of the amplifier, which was about a second, made it possible to obtain an almost distortionless recording of the low frequency waves. The amplifier was connected to the oscillograph element. The oscillation of the light beam projected from the element was photographed on sensitized paper.

Handedness In The First Two Years Of Life, Ruth Klein Lederer Jan 1936

Handedness In The First Two Years Of Life, Ruth Klein Lederer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study of handedness in the first two years of life should contribute to a systematic description of the development of handedness at this period, factual information concerning which has heretofore been lacking. In this approach handedness has been defined in terms of a psychological concept and is limited to overtly discernible handed behavior.

A Study Of Conditions Affecting The Functioning Of The Art Appreciation Process At The Child-Level, Mildred Dow Voss Jan 1936

A Study Of Conditions Affecting The Functioning Of The Art Appreciation Process At The Child-Level, Mildred Dow Voss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The claim has been made in art psychology that sensitivity to such relationships as balance, rhythm, harmony, and unity is basic to discrimination of the best in art, or aesthetic judgment; to an understanding of the composition of a picture, or aesthetic analysis; and to the production of paintings of merit. To test this assumption a series of four experimental art courses was conducted to determine if an increase in the understanding of the principles of art through instruction would also bring about an increase in aesthetic judgment, analysis, and production.

Common And Differential Factors In Reading Vocabulary And Hearing Vocabulary, Irving H. Anderson, Grant Fairbanks Jan 1936

Common And Differential Factors In Reading Vocabulary And Hearing Vocabulary, Irving H. Anderson, Grant Fairbanks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous studies have shown that recognition of word meaning is closely related to reading ability. All of these studies, however, measured reading vocabulary only. This research attempts to determine how recognition of read and heard words compares, and how the two types of vocabulary are related to reading ability. Since material is held constant, but the mode of presentation is varied, this approach should make possible the study of certain common and specific elements in the abilities to recognize words read and heard, and to determine the manner in which this relationship is affected by reading ability.

A Genetic Study Of The Vibrato, Alan D. Grinsted Jan 1936

A Genetic Study Of The Vibrato, Alan D. Grinsted

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The question of whether or not the vibrato, which is found in the singing voice of all vocal artists and of some untrained adults, and occasionally in the speaking voice, is learned, or is due to some inborn physiological characteristic is one which has been the subject of considerable speculation. Upon this question rest the answers to such questions as these: Will there come a day when voices with vibrato will not be considered beautiful? Should the vibrato be expected to appear automatically when a student of singing learns to vocalize properly or is there a special technique to be …

A Statistical Study Of Attitudes, A. R. Lauer Jan 1936

A Statistical Study Of Attitudes, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An attitude test covering seven major attitudes, established on a priori grounds, was given to 165 adult male subjects in industrial plants. Included are attitudes toward traffic regulations and enforcement; risk and annoyance; socialistic, communistic and conventional principles; racial and religious attitudes; conformist attitudes; and those relating to sports. The reliabilities of the attitude groupings range from .86 down to .55. Intercorrelations of these items indicate grouping into a smaller number of factors. A comparison is made between accident and non-accident drivers on significant attitudes.

Stuttering In Relation To Various Speech Sounds, Wendell Johnson, Spencer F. Brown Jan 1936

Stuttering In Relation To Various Speech Sounds, Wendell Johnson, Spencer F. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thirty-two stutterers read over 300,000 words, stuttering in relation to over 30,000 of them. Stuttering was analyzed with reference to its relative frequency in relation to specific sounds, and conclusions were drawn with reference to the problem of the precipitation of a moment of stuttering.
