Evaluation Of Driver Education, Elmer B. Siebrecht
Evaluation Of Driver Education, Elmer B. Siebrecht
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Driver education is a growing segment of the high school programs. In 1953-54 some 8,000 high schools in the United States offered to some 800,000 students a full semester's instruction m learning to drive a car. Educators and others are concerned with the effectiveness of such instruction. Periodic summaries ( 2) show trainees of such courses to have about 50 per cent fewer accidents, violations, arrests and warnings than non-trainees. Analysis of pertinent data (3,6,7) reveal no statistically significant differences in accident and violation involvements of trained and untrained drivers, when the most obvious variables are controlled, for women and …
The Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test As A Measure Of Aggression In Children, James R. Taylor, Lowell W. Schenke
The Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test As A Measure Of Aggression In Children, James R. Taylor, Lowell W. Schenke
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Bender-Gestalt Test has been routinely used for the past two years at the Annie Wittenmyer Home, an institution for dependent and neglected children in Iowa. This simple test was first designed by Bender (1938), as a performance test for young children. Her manual also indicates that the test can be used in the differentiation of organic brain anomolies, schizophrenias and psychoneuroses. This area of research has been covered by Hutt (1945) Swenson and Pascal (1953), Guertin (1954), and others. The observations of the writers have indicated that there is a wide difference in the way apparently normal children respond …
The Relationship Between Manifest Anxiety And Test Anxiety, William H. Lyle, Charles D. Smock
The Relationship Between Manifest Anxiety And Test Anxiety, William H. Lyle, Charles D. Smock
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Anxiety as an important determinant of behavior has been receiving increasing attention from both the clinician (5, 6, 15, 19, 23) and the experimental psychologist ( 2, 4, 8, 21) . Several measures of anxiety have been developed (6, 7, 9, 22) in order to study the relationship between anxiety as a personality variable and behavior in a variety of experimental situations. The purpose of this investigation was to study the interrelationships among three of the more widely used anxiety scales. Normative characteristics of the scales for the population sample will also be presented.
Right-Left Discrimination And Finger-Localization In Normal And Brain Injured Subjects, Arthur L. Benton, Bertram D. Cohen
Right-Left Discrimination And Finger-Localization In Normal And Brain Injured Subjects, Arthur L. Benton, Bertram D. Cohen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Right-left discrimination and finger-localization are perceptual skills of considerable clinical interest because impairment in these abilities is sometimes encountered in patients with cerebral disease (2). With the rather gross methods employed in the typical clinical neurological examination, isolated impairment in right-left discrimination or finger-localization does not appear to be a frequent finding in adult patients with cerebral injury or disease. This is not altogether surprising when it is realized that the responsible cerebral lesion is almost invariably to be found in the dominant cerebral hemisphere. A frequent consequence of such a lesion is, of course, an aphasic disorder which is …

Evaluation Of Driving Performance At Three Levels Of Driving Experience By Means Of The Auto Trainer, Robert F. Morrison
Evaluation Of Driving Performance At Three Levels Of Driving Experience By Means Of The Auto Trainer, Robert F. Morrison
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Driver education is one of the most generally accepted methods being advocated' for reducing the annual motor vehicle fatality toll. Lack of teachers and facilities limit the number of students that can be taught by the schools. One approach for teaching driving skills is by the use of simulated driving apparatus used in the classroom or laboratory. An example of these devices is the Auto Trainer developed by the American Automobile Association. A study by Lauer, Allgaier, Siebrecht and Suhr (1) shows that the Auto Trainer yields sufficiently reliable scores to warrant its use as an educational instrument in a …
The Relationship Between ''Achievement Imagery" And Stuttering Behavior In College Males, Leonard D. Goodstein, John G. Martire, Charles D. Spielberger
The Relationship Between ''Achievement Imagery" And Stuttering Behavior In College Males, Leonard D. Goodstein, John G. Martire, Charles D. Spielberger
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The empirical work of Johnson (3), Darley (1), Moncur (9) and the yet unpublished research recently completed at the University of Iowa Speech Clinic under a grant from the Hill Family Foundation lends considerable support to these speculations. These studies have reported that the parents of stuttering children, as compared with the parents of non-stutterers, are generally more perfectionistic, have higher standards and expectations both for themselves and their children and are less well satisfied with the progress they and their children make in achieving these expectations.
The Generality Of Level Of Aspiration In Three Areas Of Endeavor, Mary Catherine Hampton, Charles F. Haner
The Generality Of Level Of Aspiration In Three Areas Of Endeavor, Mary Catherine Hampton, Charles F. Haner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A number of studies, Frank (2), Gardner (3) and Gould (4), have been concerned with the generality of level of aspiration. In these investigations the subject's level of aspiration on several tasks was measured and various indicies of generality computed. Correlations of aspiration scores ranged from .04 to 70. The primary considerations involved in selecting the tasks the subject performed in these investigations were that they be relatively independent of each other and provide for reliable measurement. Most of them were motor or speed of reaction tasks as card sorting, throwing quoits, cancellation, and digit symbols. Different response measures were …
A Re-Evaluation Of The Auditory "Dead Time Constant", Charles D. Parker, Earl D. Schubert
A Re-Evaluation Of The Auditory "Dead Time Constant", Charles D. Parker, Earl D. Schubert
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Cherry (1953) and Cherry and Taylor (1954) reported that a message fed alternately to the two ears can become unintelligible at certain switching rates even though all the speech is physically present at either one ear or the other. Particularly interesting was the reported relation between "recognition time," switching rate and intelligibility. Cherry and Taylor state that there is a time interval, τ, which has the nature of a "dead time constant" during which nothing of the signal is perceived at either ear. Minimum intelligibility occurred for them at a switching rate of three per second, consequently τ is calculated …
Is Academic Survival In Engineering Related To Freshman Speed And Comprehension In Reading?, James E. Mccoy, Martin F. Fritz
Is Academic Survival In Engineering Related To Freshman Speed And Comprehension In Reading?, James E. Mccoy, Martin F. Fritz
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a relationship exists between Freshman speed and comprehension in reading and fourth year engineering matriculation over and above the contribution to be expected from the American Council on Education Psychological Examination (ACE). In other words, does a reading test contribute something to the prediction of engineering success not already found in the ACE?
The Relative Permanence Of The Decrement In Motor Performance After Practice Under Massed Conditions, Robert Seibel
The Relative Permanence Of The Decrement In Motor Performance After Practice Under Massed Conditions, Robert Seibel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Several studies have shown that on a motor task the performance of a group practicing under relatively massed conditions is poorer than the performance of a group practicing under distributed conditions. Subsequent to rest, the performance of the massed-practice group is nearer the level of the distributed-practice group, but a residual difference remains (hereinafter referred to as residual difference) no matter how long the rest period is. However, a study by Bilodeau (3) obtained results which are interpreted as indicating the lack of such residual difference. After overnight rests the initial rate of responding on each of ten days was …
Socio-Economic Status Of A Sample Of Rural Future Teachers Compared With Status Of Rural Pupils In School, William H. Dreier
Socio-Economic Status Of A Sample Of Rural Future Teachers Compared With Status Of Rural Pupils In School, William H. Dreier
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Within the past ten years p5ychologists have seen more and more evidence from their research that the influence of social class of the school pupil may be as important in determining the success of the individual child as is his mental age, his chronological age, his physical development and his emotional stability. Eells, Davis, Havighurst, Herrick and Tyler (1) have presented this kind of information. Of special importance to the teacher as she considers the problem of classroom motivation is the wide differences which have been found between the social class of the teacher and the majority of her pupils. …

The Role Of Different Sets Of Verbal Cues In Six-Choice Reaction Time, William Lowe
The Role Of Different Sets Of Verbal Cues In Six-Choice Reaction Time, William Lowe
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
McAllister (2) recently offered an explanation for the subsequent superior performance on the Star Discrimeter of Ss given relevant-S-R pretraining over Ss given relevant-S pretraining. She further proposed that because of previous learning, different relevantS-R pretraining would lead to differential facilitation. This differential facilitation would occur for two reasons. First, verbal responses serve as cues, which, through past learning (plus instructions), elicit responses which furnish information concerning the correct motor responses. Since the past learning would, presumably, be different for various types of verbal responses this variation would lead to differential facilitation. Second, if in previous learning situations response strength …
The Effects Of Frequency Of Usage On Pre-Recognition Responses And Recognition Thresholds Of Words, Charles D. Smock
The Effects Of Frequency Of Usage On Pre-Recognition Responses And Recognition Thresholds Of Words, Charles D. Smock
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Tachistoscopic presentation of words has been widely used in the study of the relationship between personality variables and perception. The procedure is to present words drawn from relevant meaning classes, such as needs or values, for· increasing periods of exposure until the S is able to correctly identify the stimulus words. The results of several such experiments (3, 4, 8, 10) lend support to the view that personality factors are important determiners of an individual’s sensitivity to visually presented stimuli. However, since most of these studies have used verbal report as the index of perceptual sensitivity, many investigators have become …
A Comparison Of Methods For Handling Extreme Values In Experimental Procedure, Virtus W. Suhr
A Comparison Of Methods For Handling Extreme Values In Experimental Procedure, Virtus W. Suhr
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In dealing with certain types of psychological measures, particularly those involving perception and attention, one is sometimes confronted with excessive values which are probably due to lapse of one type or another. Occasionally these extreme values may be numerous enough to spuriously influence the results. This is particularly true when the mean value of a series of scores is taken as a basis for comparing performance of two or more individuals or groups under different experimental conditions. Several rule-of-thumb methods have been used to secure a valid index for comparison of such measures. Among them are: 1. Use of the …
Response Strength As A Function Of Delay Of Reward And Physical Confinement, Peter Lynn Carlton
Response Strength As A Function Of Delay Of Reward And Physical Confinement, Peter Lynn Carlton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A number of recent investigations have been concerned with the study of the effect of varying the length of delay of reward and of shifting this delay period on level of performance in instrumental conditioning (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11) . In general, these studies have found level of performance at the asymptote to be some inverse function of the time of delay and that the length of delay that will still provide for learning appears to be a function of the effectiveness of secondary reinforcement in the situation (1, 6, 7, 10).
A Pre-Elementary Method For Cornet And Clarinet, James Croft
A Pre-Elementary Method For Cornet And Clarinet, James Croft
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Instrumental music teachers are always searching for a published instructional method that satisfies all the criteria they seek to find in the perfect method. However, no one method can satisfy everyone. Each teacher supplements, with his own ideas, the method which he has found to be the most satisfactory. The author's experience indicated that the greatest amount of supplementing had to be done with the beginning pupils in the elementary grades.
Factors Associated With The Decision Of College Freshman To Prepare For Teaching And To Attend Iowa State Teachers College, Don Dahlke
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The teaching personnel constitutes one of the most important elements in the educational system of any country. This fact is especially meaningful to the people of a democratic society, since the people in such a society are responsible for the educational system. The quality of living in a democratic society is significantly dependent upon those persons engaged in teaching.
The Role Of The Hitler Youth In Nazi Education, Richard Andrew Dugstad
The Role Of The Hitler Youth In Nazi Education, Richard Andrew Dugstad
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Third Reich was promised by Hitler to last a thousand years; because of him, it was destroyed in twelve years. In the brief time the Nazi State occupied history's stage, the utter and ruthless control of all German youth was effected through the implementation of the National Socialist Youth Organization, the Hitler Youth. The National Socialist State did not immediately come into being; rather, the group of men responsible for its creation began early to lay the Nazi foundation by systematically indoctrinating many of the German people long before the 1933 assumption of power. After 1933, the National Socialist …

It was the purpose of this study to collect the available materials concerning forensics and other significantly related speech work from the primary sources now existing at the Iowa State Teachers College, to synthesize this material into a unified narrative, and to present this historical record of forensics within the organismic setting of the growth and evolution of the college and of forensics nationally.
The Effect Upon Academic Achievement Of The Rapid Learners In A Fifth And Sixth Grade Group When Specific Enriching Activities Are Provided, Nina L. Jensen
The Effect Upon Academic Achievement Of The Rapid Learners In A Fifth And Sixth Grade Group When Specific Enriching Activities Are Provided, Nina L. Jensen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Educators have long been aware of the varied needs, abilities, and interests of the children in our schools. They have sought to employ appropriate curricula, materials, and methods, to meet the wide range of abilities that prevails in every classroom. Despite our attempts to bring the greatest good to the greatest number, our schools sometimes fail to meet the particular needs of the individuals and the groups they serve. Gifted children constitute one such neglected group.
The Status And Role Of The Principal In Selected Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 100 To 200 Students, Eugene Hiskey
The Status And Role Of The Principal In Selected Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 100 To 200 Students, Eugene Hiskey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Within the next ten years, high schools in Iowa and throughout the United States will have the largest enrollments in history. There will, however, be fewer high schools because of school district reorganization. The present school district reorganization law of Iowa is a definite factor in the increase in number of high schools with enrollments of one hundred and over.
Curricular Inadequacies Of The Two-Year Plan At Iowa State Teachers College, Hitoshi Ikeda
Curricular Inadequacies Of The Two-Year Plan At Iowa State Teachers College, Hitoshi Ikeda
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
It is the purpose of this study (1) to determine the nature and scope of difficulties encountered by beginning teachers who completed the two- year plan at Iowa State Teachers College; (2) to determine in which course of the two-year plan the teachers felt that each difficulty could have been more adequately covered; (3) to obtain opinions of the desirable characteristics of the two-year plan and (4) to derive conclusions , as warranted by the findings , which will serve as a basis for improvement and evaluations of the two-year program at Iowa State Teachers College .
