Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek
Effects Of Motivation On The Performance Of Difficult And Easy Motor Tasks, Albert J. Macek
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this study was to determine whether high motivational level facilitates performance on an easy motor task and impairs performance on a difficult one. The problem is suggested by the theoretical formulations of Hull (4) and Spence (12) and the experiments done within this framework. The theory states that a response tendency is some multiplicative combination of associative and motivational factors. The most obvious consequence of this formulation is that as motivational level increases, performance will increase. But this applies only to the simplest situations, in which there is but one response tendency to be augmented by increased …
Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough
Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stuttering Severity, Dorothy Sherman, Martin Young, Kenneth Gough
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Various measures of severity of stuttering are available and are used both clinically and experimentally. Information concerning the relationships among these various measures thus should be useful in planning effective therapy or in designing experiments. In a previous study Sherman and Trotter (4) evaluated the relationship between two measures of the severity of stuttering. One measure was the mean scale value of severity of individual moments of stuttering derived from listeners' responses; the other measure was frequency of stuttering. Measures were taken on tape-recorded readings of a 500-word passage. The obtained estimate of the strength of relationship was a Pearson …
Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English
Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Three years ago, when the writer first entered the Cedar Falls Junior High School as a classroom teacher, students who did not conform to school regulations were assigned to detention during the period following the regular school day. The policy was to assign each teacher to one week of detention duty on a rotating basis as part of the teaching load. It was apparent that the teachers considered the detention assign.ment among the least desirable of their duties. The primary objective of detention was to make the experience disagreeable enough that the students would conform to school regulations and remain …

A Seminar In High School Electronics, John Benjamin Daniels
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A critical evaluation of the high school science program, in this country, indicates that the superior science students or those with special science interests are not being challenged in classroom learning activities. Educators have become even more aware of this situation due to the recent threat to the nation's security after the Russians launched their satellites.

An Evaluative Study Of Seventh Grade Homeroom Activities At Nathan Weeks Junior High School, Des Moines, Iowa, Harold Eugene Dilts
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Several years ago the Des Moines Public School System provided time in their secondary school schedule for a homeroom period. The purpose of this period was to enable the classroom teacher to handle pupil administrative details, gather personal information, and offer both personal and group guidance to the members of the homeroom. Since that time, conflicting opinions as to the value of this homeroom period have arisen. The opinions expressed have been varied and have been based on limited observation. No experimental evidence has been presented to indicate whether or not the homerooms were meeting the needs for which they …

An Evaluation Of College Days Based Upon Opinions Of Iowa State Teachers College Freshmen, Norbert K. Baumgart
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Each year more and more of our high school graduates continue their education at institutions of higher learning. In 1920 only 597,880 students were enrolled in college. By 1960, however, 3,221,0001 of our secondary school graduates are expected to find their way to one of America's 1,100 degree granting campuses. 2 The ever-increasing number of students going to college makes it evident that colleges will soon be bulging at the seams. This increase in college enrollment makes some sort of college information program appear more important than ever before.

A Survey Of The Educational And Personal Characteristics Required For Initial Employment Of Accountants In A Selected Group Of Iowa Industries, Leonard Eugene Bennett
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
One of the most dynamic characteristics of today's society is found in its complex and everchanging economic structure. These characteristics have been enhanced by such elements as the growth of corporate enterprise, greater governmental regulations of business, and increased demands by consumers for more business services. With the increase of these complexities, the need for accurate and readily understood records is great. Therefore, the need for specialists who can understand, prepare, and interpret these records becomes more and more important. It is the function of financial accounting to give expression to these records and to make the activities of a …

A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson
A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Communication between the school and the community has been a problem to educators and patrons of school districts for some time. In the early years of our country, the school was the center of the community and nothing happened in the school that the people in the area did not know. As the urbanization of our country began to take place, the school gradually lost its top spot on the conversational list of the people within the school district. Only within the smallest communities did communication of school and community not suffer. Most of this communication was of the personal …

A Survey Of Religion In Education In The Public Schools Of Iowa: Practices And Legal Regulations, William Thomas Jochumsen
A Survey Of Religion In Education In The Public Schools Of Iowa: Practices And Legal Regulations, William Thomas Jochumsen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Since World War II, there has been a new surge of interest on the part of American citizens concerning religion in education in the public schools. The numerous books published on this subject; the frequency with which articles concerning the pros and cons appeared in newspapers and periodicals; the extensive utilization of panel and group discussions on the subject among the clergy, educators, and parents; and the recent court rulings will all substantiate this statement. It is necessary that research be conducted in order to discover present practices and to lessen the great confusion that now exists. With this information, …

Because of these differences, teacher educating institutions have found it necessary to provide their prospective teachers with a series of developmental experiences which will increase their effectiveness as public school teachers. Th series of developmental experiences must be well planned and based upon a sound educational philosophy.

Introductory Botany In State Supported Institutions, M. A. Adansi
Introductory Botany In State Supported Institutions, M. A. Adansi
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
One of the largest responsibilities of botanists to their science should be in the field of teaching. If the importance of botany in the curricula of colleges and universities is to be maintained then it is obligatory to study teaching problems critically, and to undertake periodic objective evaluations of teaching methods, practices, and procedures. Graduate students are prospective teachers who will assume responsibility for providing basic training in plant science. Since many gain their first teaching experience as assistants, introductory botany should be well taught in order to imbue them with the proper attitudes and skills requisite to their profession. …
Right-Left Discrimination And Finger Localization In Schizophrenic Subjects, Leonard D. Goodstein
Right-Left Discrimination And Finger Localization In Schizophrenic Subjects, Leonard D. Goodstein
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Much interest has been evidenced recently in right-left discrimination and finger localization tasks as techniques for demonstrating behavioral impairment in patients with known cerebral disease or injury. Defective performance by brain injured patients on both types of tasks has been described in numerous case reports (cf. 3) and has· been demonstrated in experimentally-produced cerebral dysfunction (1). In a systematic study of the incidence of defective performance in brain-injured and control patients, Benton and Cohen (2) found that the brain-injured patients, who did not suffer from serious general intellectual deficit, showed significant impairment in finger-localization performance when compared to the matched …
