An Assessment Of The Differences Between High And Low Achieving Students. Final Report, Ralph Scott, Jon A. Ford

Primarily a longitudinal and quantitative analysis of achievement functioning; this experiment sought to identify factors which promote or impair the learning of individual children. The 683 Junior High students were divided into one of eight groups according to sex; race and whether their seventh grade Iowa Test of Basic Skills Composite score was above or below that expected from their Kindergarten Metropolitan Readiness Test performance. The incidence of males and females making unexpected gains (Ups) or losses (Downs) was approximately the same; but a significantly greater proportion of black children made greater than expected achievement gains. Many educators are arguing that if education is to be successful, classroom teachers must be able to match the instructional material for each student with that student's level of achievement. Supposedly, providing material that is too difficult or too advanced for the student's ability can result in failure and eventually a loss of motivation. On the other hand, providing material far below the present level of achievement can lead to a similar loss of motivation. According to this line of argument one of the basic tasks facing the teacher is the proper "matching" of the curriculum to the student's capabilities. …

A Survey Of Reading Programs In Selected Junior High Schools In Six Iowa Counties, Daniel Charles Manning

The purpose of this survey was to assess the current status of junior high reading programs. Fifteen schools were randomly selected from the schools within the counties surrounding Blackhawk County. Criteria which indicated aspects of successful reading programs were selected and were subsequently used in the assessments. Particular emphasis was placed upon individualization, diagnosis, language arts integration, reading in the content areas, and on organizational structure. Visitation requests were sent, and acceptances were received from thirteen schools. During the spring term of the 1971- 1972 academic year, visitations were made. Data was obtained through teacher interview and classroom observation.

The problem of the investigation concerned itself with the effect of preschool experiences on the achievement of the kindergarten children enrolled in the 1971-1972 Follow Through Program in Waterloo, Iowa, which used the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, model of individually prescribed instruction. The study explored the effects of preschool experience upon kindergarten males and females as contrasted to the male and female kindergarten children without preschool experience.

Two conceptual constructs gave direction and provided the rationale for this study. The first conceptual construct provided research related to early childhood education presented according to the Geneticist, Environmentalist, and the Interactionalist's positions. The second …

The Role Of The School Psychologist As Perceived By Elementary Principals And By School Psychologists, Joan Holliday Smith

The problem that was considered in the study was whether the role of the school psychologist was perceived differently by elementary principals and school psychologists.

A questionnaire was developed which had two slightly differing forms, one for principals and one for psychologists. The items on the questionnaire sought to assess the opinions of both groups concerning: who is and who should be responsible for selected tasks, the effectiveness of psychological services and several aspects of authority. The questionnaires were sent to a randomly selected group of elementary principals (200) and all of the school psychologists in Iowa (170). Useable returns …

This study was undertaken to compare the level of academic success of two groups of students as they were affected by admission policies and practices at the University of Northern Iowa. Students in both groups ranked in the lower half of their respective graduating classes. Students in Group I were denied admission, and students in Group II were admitted to the fall semester 1964.

High school counselors and college registrars at 232 schools were asked to provide transcripts of records and/or completed reporting forms for each of the 185 students in Group 1 who had previously attended their institutions. This …

The major problem confronting a student of Paradise Regained is to relate theology, philosophy, and drama. Critics, in the main, have either oversimplified the issues, or have given lopsided interpretations of the poem, emphasizing one aspect to the detriment of others of significance. Consequently, as noted in the Introduction, our study examines Paradise Regained's central theological and philosophical equation of Being and Freedom. The purpose of this study was to view the phenomenon of attrition from a sociological perspective utilizing the concept of "social alienation" as a predisposing factor in college attrition. The names of 136 students who withdrew prior to, or at the end of, the first semester of their freshman year for the academic years 1969-70, 1970-71, and 1971-72 were secured from the Data Processing Office of the University of Northern Iowa. This exploratory study was conducted to survey and compare students who chose a four year university oriented textiles and clothing in business program and students who chose a two year vocationally oriented fashion merchandising program. Comparisons were made between the two samples in selected demographic information: family and educational backgrounds, personal orientation to a fashion retailing career, and personal professional goals. Comparisons were also made in students' knowledge of current fashion awareness, interest in clothing, and values assigned to clothing.
