Socioapp: Detecting Your Sociability Status With Your Smartphone, Aaron Walker, Dheryta Jaisinghani Ph.D., Sarah Diesburg Ph.D.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

We are still recovering from the pandemic’s psychological effects and figuring out how to break out of our quarantine. Students may not realize they have antisocial behaviors that have a negative affect on students’ grades. Our smartphones are packed with sensors that can help us to passively detect social status of a subject and propose prospective remedies. Our hypothesis is that you are social when co-doing certain activities like walking and talking. Thus, we begin with detecting activities such as, walking, sitting, and cooking using the movement sensors accelerometer and gyroscope; then, we detect proximity with another person using the …

The Convergence Of Online Teaching And Problem Based Learning Modules Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Daniel Bumblauskas, Nick Vyas Jul 2021

The Convergence Of Online Teaching And Problem Based Learning Modules Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Daniel Bumblauskas, Nick Vyas

Faculty Work

There is a convergence unfolding between two formerly unique and separate areas of teaching research methodology: distance education and problem-based learning (PBL) environments. Much has been published on each field independently, however, in the modern-era of online, distance, and hybrid educational programs there is a need for more case and experiential-based learning activities which can effectively measure stated learning objectives. Trends in education have led to the development of various methods to instruct courses and conduct research online. Teaching research methodology and pedagogy have evolved to include video capture, remote conferencing, and other real-time communications techniques allowing faculty and students …

Searching For True Happiness, Taylor Shipley

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

This paper takes a look into what variables might impact an individual's happiness. It utilizes the most recent World Happiness Report along with data collected from the UN. Two regressions were run, the first one using the variables GDP per capita, female and male life expectancy, unemployment rate, literacy rate, and consumer price index with a total of one hundred forty-eight countries. The second regression used the same variables along with corruption rating with a total of fifty-nine countries. It was found that GDP per capita, female life expectancy, and unemployment were the only three significant variables in the first …

Context:

Chronic heat exposure promotes cardiovascular and cellular adaptations, improving an organism's ability to tolerate subsequent stressors. Heat exposure may also promote neural adaptations and alter the neural–hormonal stress response. Hot-temperature yoga (HY) combines mind–body exercise with heat exposure. The added heat component in HY may induce cardiovascular and cellular changes, along with neural benefits and modulation of stress hormones.

Aims:

The purpose of the present study is to compare the cardiovascular, cellular heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), neural, and hormonal adaptations of HY versus normal-temperature yoga (NY).

Settings and Design:

Twenty-two subjects (males = 11 and females = 11, …

The Associations Between Traumatic Brain Injury And Sleep Disorders, Mckenzie Hollander

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

The purpose of this study is to look at the connections between traumatic brain injury and sleep disorders. Prior research has shown that there are associations between TBI and sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs, circadian rhythm, sleepwalking, nightmares and daily sleep complaints on daily activities. Findings showed that prior traumatic brain injuries and severity of these brain injuries increase risk for sleep disorders.

Moral Values And Ideological Conclusions Influence Perceived Credibility For Headlines, Morning Baker, Nick Clark, Helen Harton Apr 2021

Moral Values And Ideological Conclusions Influence Perceived Credibility For Headlines, Morning Baker, Nick Clark, Helen Harton

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

People prioritize moral values differently based on political ideology (Graham et al., 2009) and form ideological conclusions based on these values (Haidt, 2001). For example, conservatives have more positive perceptions of police compared to liberals (Stack & Cao, 1998), in part because of the centrality of law and order as a conservative value. People also justify maintaining their political affiliation by defining opposing conclusions as less credible (Bail et al., 2018; Haidt, 2001). In this study, we investigate how ideological values vs. conclusions affect perceived credibility of and interest in headlines. We hypothesize that conservatives and liberals will rate headlines …

“It All Just Ends”: Death Attitudes Across Age, Gender And Religion [Poster], Bekah Bass Apr 2021

“It All Just Ends”: Death Attitudes Across Age, Gender And Religion [Poster], Bekah Bass

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Death is a social and biological reality that affects everyone, however not uniformly. Utilizing original data and the Death Attitudes Profile – Revised by Wong, Reker, and Gesser (1994), this study investigates differences in death attitudes across different demographics including age, gender, and religion. Results show correlations between positive, neutral, and negative death attitudes and the age of respondents. Additionally, neutral and approach acceptance were found to be associated with gender and religion, respectively. These significant results imply that perspectives on death differ across these identities. Further research on death attitudes among diverse age, racial, ethnic, gender, and religious groups …

Quality And Quantity Of Social Support In College Students With Adhd Symptomatology, Chloe Reeble Apr 2021

Quality And Quantity Of Social Support In College Students With Adhd Symptomatology, Chloe Reeble

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Social support has been found to be a protective factor in some mental illnesses. College students with ADHD often have a hard time maintaining peer relationships. This study examines the relation between ADHD and social support in college students. I found that those who experienced increased social impairment and elevated ADHD symptoms experience reduced social support quality. These results suggest that college students with elevated ADHD symptomatology may experience a harder time cultivating and maintaining friendships. Clinical implications include better appraisal of social support in clients with ADHD, and treatment approaches that address social impairment.

Language Of Witness: Survivor Testimony And Narrative Representation Of The Mauthausen Experience, Siegrun Wildner Jan 2021

Language Of Witness: Survivor Testimony And Narrative Representation Of The Mauthausen Experience, Siegrun Wildner

Faculty Publications

This study analyses and compares how survivors of the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen (Austria) recount significant events or situations in the camp at specific times and places in their testimonies published, right after the liberation, between 1945 and 1950. As an initial and exploratory stage of a large-scale investigation into survivor narratives, this article highlights two intersecting events at the Mauthausen main camp, Himmler’s visits and the arrival of Dutch Jews, and addresses the question of how Gostner, Hoffmann, Schifko-Pungartnik, Stantke, and Wiesenthal in their written accounts assessed, understood, reconstructed, and transmitted similar events, and how these camp experiences …

Just Txt Me: How Digital Platforms Shape The Close Relationships Of Generation Z, Kurt Sernett, Abigail Reinhardt, Lillian Smithson, Mitchell Hollingshead

Iowa Journal of Communication

The rise of texting and social media usage, primarily among Millennials and Generation Z, has led to the emergence of new communication behaviors in the last decade. While many studies have focused solely on the behaviors of Millennials in the digital age, we examine the behaviors of Generation Z and how the usage of digital communication shapes the close relationships of America’s college-aged youth population. After identifying the advantages and disadvantages of face-to-face communication and digital communication, we argue that today’s youth seek a healthy balance between in-person and online communication to cultivate fulfilling interpersonal relationships with their friends and …

Communicating Positive Hpv Test Results: A Directed Content Analysis Of Women's Preferences Using Self-Determination Theory, Susanna Foxworthy Scott, Katharine J. Head, Nicole L. Johnson, Kaitlyn Kruer, Gregory D. Zimet

Iowa Journal of Communication

Changes in cervical cancer screening guidelines and persistent disparities indicate a need to identify communication preferences for receiving a positive HPV test result to ensure appropriate follow-up care. We conducted a directed content analysis guided by the tenets of self-determination theory of 575 written responses derived from a national sample of women > 18 in the United States. Biologically female women responded to a prompt about communication preferences for a positive HPV test result. Pearson chi-square analyses were conducted to discover differences in communication preferences. Individuals with health insurance (p = 0.044), those with >$29,999 in annual household income (p = …
