Women And Self-Esteem, Ruth Carolyn Tierney Jan 1988

Women And Self-Esteem, Ruth Carolyn Tierney

Graduate Research Papers

Self-esteem, the condition wherein one feels both competent to live and worthy of living, enables people to provide for their own needs as well as those of others. People with high self-esteem relate to others in a healthy manner (Branden, 1981; Laskey, 1982). Self-esteem predominantly depends on the extent to which women can attain their ideal self-concept (Krausz, 1986). Sanford and Donovan (1984) stated that women's self-concept is the set of beliefs and images they all have and hold to be true of themselves. By contrast, their level of self-esteem is the measure of how much they like and approve …

Cooperative Learning: A Way To Build Social Skills Into Classroom Instruction Without Jeopardizing Achievement, Barbara Elaine Moine

Graduate Research Papers

Over the years there has developed a dilemma between instructional strategies that promote achievement and instructional strategies that promote social development. 1 The primary aim of schools is to prepare students for success in careers and adult responsibilities. An assumption is made that students will be able to successfully apply what they learn in school to future situations.

"Within A Cloven Pine": Identifying The Learning Disabled Student In A University Center, Patricia M. Godwin

Draftings In

A writing center, such as the one at the University of Northern Iowa, is designed to help students improve their writing through tutoring on a one-to-one basis. Most of the tutoring is done by peer tutors who are students with some ability to write themselves, but more importantly, who have demonstrated a willingness and the patience to help others learn as well.

In and of itself, Mark Vonnegut's The Eden Express (1975) - a harrowing account of his experience with mental illness - is captivating. Well-written and perceptive, it expresses a unique view of a particular kind of mental disorder and has been hailed as a "textbook" of sorts for those suffering from or working with victims of schizophrenia. However, beyond its individual merits, The Eden Express serves as an interesting complement to the novels and ideas of Mark's father, novelist Kurt Vonnegut.

Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline Jan 1988

Biotechnology: A Dilemma For Land-Grant Institutions, A. David Kline

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

There is at least a prima facie moral tension between universities asserting land-grant principles and simultaneously sponsoring biotechnology. The core of the problem is the likely deleterious economic effects of biotechnology on rural communities -- the very constituency whose welfare is supposedly promoted by land-grant institutions. Considered are a number of responses to this tension including efforts to show that the tension is only apparent or that it can be eliminated through various public policies. It is argued that these "solutions" fail.

The upshot is that if the land-grant label is to be taken seriously, those institutions should begin allocating …

Training Of Student Services Paraprofessionals, Jennifer M. Kloberdanz

Graduate Research Papers

More publications have been devoted to paraprofessional training within the last five years (Ender and Winston, 1984), an indication that higher education is becoming more aware of the need to utilize paraprofessionals and that training programs must be developed to adapt to this trend. A student paraprofessional is an undergraduate or graduate student without extended professional training who is specifically selected, trained, and given ongoing supervision to perform some designated portion of the tasks usually performed by the professional (Delworth, Sherwood, Casaburri, 1974). The paraprofessional is generally involved in the central activity of the agency with which he/she is associated.

An Interpretative History Of The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science was first published in 1887 and has continued yearly except for 1905. Business reports and contributed papers constituted most of the volumes. Publication of symposia has become more popular in recent years. Financial and mechanical problems have caused strains at rimes, but these have largely been solved after publication became independent of the State Printer.

Biotechnology: Impact On Iowa's Agricultural Economy, Dwight T. Thomas Jan 1988

Biotechnology: Impact On Iowa's Agricultural Economy, Dwight T. Thomas

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Agriculture has always been an important cornerstone of Iowa's economy. The highly publicized difficulties in the agricultural economy in Iowa have highlighted both the importance of agriculture and pitfalls when agriculture is hit by adverse conditions. Iowa's agriculture and agricultural infrastructure have a heritage characterized by the development of very efficient production technology and the early use of innovative ideas. The early adoption of hybrid corn is but one example of the acceptance new technology. Today more than ever before there is a need for improved profitability and for the possibility of diversification of agricultural products in Iowa.

Communication Between Administrators And Staff, Timothy Robert Bell Jan 1988

Communication Between Administrators And Staff, Timothy Robert Bell

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of communication between administrators 1 and staff. Shortt {1987) suggested that historically there has been a communication gap between school administration and staff. He asserted that effective administrators have many qualities; however, communication skills are the ones that may have the most direct impact on positive school climate. It seems apparent that closing the communication gap between administrator and staff has an impact upon positive school climate.

Mathematics And The Young Child, Colleen Christiansen Jan 1988

Mathematics And The Young Child, Colleen Christiansen

Graduate Research Papers

Educators are continuously searching for better techniques for working with young children and establishing developmentally appropriate curricula. We have witnessed a great surge of interest in the work of Piaget, and its many implications for educating young children. His investigation into development of a number of logical, physical, and mathematical notions contains several ideas which, if suitably explored and developed, could prove valuable to educators and instructional planners (Ginsburg and Opper, p. 218). There are indications from Piagetian research, relevant to both affective and cognitive development of children, that a mathematics program for young children should be one of exploration …

Performance Technology: The Role Of The Training Professional, Marie L. Grabenbauer Jan 1988

Performance Technology: The Role Of The Training Professional, Marie L. Grabenbauer

Graduate Research Papers

According to Gary Worley (1988) in his article "Improving Productivity Through People" modem businesses face three major challenges: improving product quality, improving worker productivity, and competing in a globel [sic] marketplace. If the economy of the United States is going to continue to prosper, efficient worker performance is one of the primary concerns for the business world. This means increasing pressure for people to perform in jobs and increased emphasis on performance technology.

Classroom Writing: Understanding The Writing Process, Mary Jane Mccollum Jan 1988

Classroom Writing: Understanding The Writing Process, Mary Jane Mccollum

Graduate Research Papers

The writing across the curriculum movement began in the 1960s with a study conducted by James Britton and his associates (Britton, Burgess, Martin, McLeod, Rosen, 1975) on the kinds and uses of writing in the British schools. They studied over 2,000 pieces of writing collected from students aged 11 to 18. In the United States, during the 1970s, teachers realized that the standard approach to teaching writing skills did not seem to be producing desired results (Gray, 1988). A large percentage of young people seemed to lack the motivation needed to learn to write well. They weren't persuaded that writing …

An Investigation Into The Problem-Based Learning Model For The Educational Preparation Of Dental Hygienists, Sarah Ann Turner Jan 1988

An Investigation Into The Problem-Based Learning Model For The Educational Preparation Of Dental Hygienists, Sarah Ann Turner

Graduate Research Papers

Dental Hygiene is a young profession by most standards. The first class for training dental hygienists began in 1913, a mere seventy five years ago. From its inception, the mission of dental hygiene was to serve the public providing preventive oral health care to those in need. That singular focus has not changed to this date nor is it likely to change in the future. However, what is changing is the emergence of a profession in the fullest sense of the word. A profession is defined by Webster as: "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic …
