The Medium, The Message, And The Supreme Court: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Opinions In Obscenity Cases, Jerry M. Goldberg Jan 1990

The Medium, The Message, And The Supreme Court: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Opinions In Obscenity Cases, Jerry M. Goldberg

Iowa Journal of Communication

The relationship between the various media of communication and the culture in which they operate is of major interest to mass communication scholars. Marshall McLuhan, the "media guru" of the 60s, was among the most controversial people to explore this relationship. Daniel Czitrom, while generally critical of McLuhan's theories and scholarship, recognizes the scope of McLuhan's influence. Czitrom writes:

McLuhan's analysis of modern media has profoundly transformed our perceptions of twentieth-century life, particularly for the generation born after World War II. When the French coined the term mcluhanisme, they were referring not only to the man but also to a …

Television Reporting Of The Bereaved: A General Semantics Approach, Patrick J. Herbert Jan 1990

Television Reporting Of The Bereaved: A General Semantics Approach, Patrick J. Herbert

Iowa Journal of Communication

That television is a pervasive force in American culture impacting areas from government policy-making to family life is, by now an understatement. Less certain is the continuing controversy over the interpretation of the First Amendment regarding the media's right to inform alongside television's obligation toward social responsibility-particularly in the underdeveloped research area of television's reporting of the bereaved. The purposes of this paper are three-fold: first, briefly to underscore television's potential influence on the viewer; second, to shed some light on the right-to-privacy issue; and finally, to show how knowledge and application of basic general semantics principles when interviewing the …

Comparison Of Locus Of Control And Wisc-R Profiles Of Delinquent And Pre-Delinquent Adolescent Males, Barbara Lynn Brainard-Patterson Jan 1990

Comparison Of Locus Of Control And Wisc-R Profiles Of Delinquent And Pre-Delinquent Adolescent Males, Barbara Lynn Brainard-Patterson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Locus of control refers to the degree to which individuals believe they are responsible for the outcomes of their behavior. Internally controlled people believe that they have some control over their successes or failures, whereas externally controlled people believe that their success or failure is a result of fate, luck, or circumstance. It is suggested that children with an internal locus of control are more aware of their environment, and the relationship between their behavior and achievement. Integral to Wechsler's definition of intelligence is the capacity to understand and cope with one's environment. The purpose of this study was to …

Public Relations For The Not-For-Profit Professional Resident Theatre: An Examination Of Four Models, Lauren Green-Caldwell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study seeks to determine how public relations is practiced in the not-for-profit professional resident theatre and determine if the style of practice in use is the most advantageous for the current environment. The study examines literature in three areas: General public relations, public relations in the not-for-profit world, and oublic relations in theatre management. During analysis of this material, the practice of public relations in the not-for-profit professional resident theatre is placed within the framework of Grunig's four models of public relations. According to Grunig, if selling tickets is the goal, then theatre should fit within the first model, …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between A Program For Teaching Thinking Skills And Science Test Scores, Craig M. Hemmen Jan 1990

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between A Program For Teaching Thinking Skills And Science Test Scores, Craig M. Hemmen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been limited research which specifically explores the effects of science achievement when teaching thinking skills in isolation to upper elementary students. There are many components of thinking skills; however, the present study deals specifically with the student responsibility aspect of thinking skills. Subjects are fifth- and sixth-grade science students enrolled in a small rural Midwestern school district. Students were divided into classes by the principal. There was an effort to equalize both classes academically. The student responsibility section of a thinking skills program, devised by the Area Education Agency 7, was used. A 2-week period at the beginning …

Creating Instructional Strategies Which Match Individual Learning Styles, Stephanie Veronica Frisco Jan 1990

Creating Instructional Strategies Which Match Individual Learning Styles, Stephanie Veronica Frisco

Graduate Research Papers

Recent studies have begun to focus on matching instructional 3 strategies and learning styles. For example, the studies conducted by Biggs, Papalia, and Smith and Renzulli ( cited in Curry, 1990) article has as their primary objective the study and application of learning styles to improve the immediate and long-term results of general teaching-learning processes. According to Guild (cited in Brandt, 1990) , the focal point of the learning style movement is that individuals are different, so one instructional strategy will not suit everyone. Teachers who have begun to explore the notion of learning styles agree that the concept gives …

Exercise Habits Of College-Age Students, Kevin Sullivan Jan 1990

Exercise Habits Of College-Age Students, Kevin Sullivan

Graduate Research Papers

Recent studies have shown that cardiovascular disease is a factor in 54% of all deaths (Kreplin, 1981), and that youngsters are not physically fit. Based upon these studies and others, it is likely that college-age students are not implementing good exercise habits. The purpose of this study was to determine the exercise habits of college-age students.

The design of the study was quasi-experimental. A researcher-generated exercise questionnaire (Appendix A) was constructed and administered to 112 subjects in 8 different summer school classes at the University of Northern Iowa. There were 41 males and 71 females who volunteered to complete the …

Sex And Age Differences In The Experience Of Stress, Carmen M. Charles

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study is to determine if there are sex and age differences in the experience of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse) in a working population. Previous research findings suggest that females experience more problems with anxiety and depression. Also, previous research shows that males experience more problems associated with drinking alcohol. The subjects in the present study are 244 volunteers from summer psychology classes at the University of Northern Iowa and the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel. The results indicated that males and females differed significantly on the Self-Report Anxiety Scale, …

Language And Identity In Sophie’S Choice, Elizabeth Ruth Bingham Jan 1990

Language And Identity In Sophie’S Choice, Elizabeth Ruth Bingham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sophie Zawistowska, the title character in William Styron's novel Sophie's Choice, has a severe identity problem. She acts as dutiful daughter, unfulfilled spouse, desperate mother, impassioned lover, tragic victim, unquestioning accomplice, and guilt-consumed survivor. Many of these characterizations conflict directly with each other. Sophie also speaks six languages and identifies at various times with speakers of German, Polish, French, Russian, English, and Yiddish, language groups that often conflict, as well. Although Sophie has various identities, she doesn't have a unified sense of self. Her native land, Poland, with which she might identify, has an identity crisis of its own, as …

Power Differentials In Marriage: A Model, Jean Litterer Goings Jan 1990

Power Differentials In Marriage: A Model, Jean Litterer Goings

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This paper is an analysis of the concept of marital power in terms of its effect on t he distribution of power among spouses. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the topic of marital power. Post-Hoc Longitudinal Study Of The Stability And Validity Of Standardized Test Scores Of Handicapped Children, Randal Dennis Brown Jan 1990

Post-Hoc Longitudinal Study Of The Stability And Validity Of Standardized Test Scores Of Handicapped Children, Randal Dennis Brown

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the delivery of special education services to handicapped children, a requirement to certify the nature and severity of each child's handicap was built into PL 94-142, The Education of All Handicapped Children Act (Reynolds, Gutkin, Elliott, & Witt, 1984). In the aftermath of that legislation has arisen a serious question as to whether or not the process of providing such services on a categorical (by nature of the handicapped) basis has led to an unanticipated social harm (stigma) of such a magnitude that the assessment process needs to be re-evaluated (Guskin, Bartel, & MacMillan, 1975). Part of the social …

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford Jan 1990

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Stress, an everyday fact of life, can be either positive or negative (Bradfield & Fones, 1985a; Truch, 1980). When faced with too little stress, a lack of productivity may occur, however, when faced with too much stress, anxiety and unhappiness may result (Johnson & Harkins, 1984).

A growing interest has developed concerning factors contributing to the stress of special education teachers (Fimian & Santoro, 1983). While the literature on stress has grown, research is very limited in the area of stress and early childhood special education teachers.

The purpose of this study was to identify (a) the stress producing variables …

The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Noel N. Schmidt Jan 1990

The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Noel N. Schmidt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many researchers agree that a student's level of self-esteem is important to success and self-esteem (Chapman & Boersma, 1980). If a student's level of self-esteem can be raised, this improvement may lead to improvement in other areas such as academic achievement (Shavelson & Bolus, 1982). In addition, teaching students to attribute success to themselves should improve self-esteem (Gurney, 1987). Consequently, teaching an internal locus of control to students could be a concern for the local school district (Stipek & Weisz, 1981). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship which exists between the constructs of locus of control …

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas Jan 1990

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years the problem of depression among children and adolescents has become increasingly important to educators and mental health professionals such as school psychologists. Documented increases in depressive symptoms among school-age youth may be reflected in an increase in acting out behaviors in the school settings which, in turn may adversely affect academic performance, teacher expectations, and peer relationships. This study investigated the incidence of depression in a parochial high school using a self-report procedure and compared with non-parochial studies. Differences between male and female students were analyzed, it was expected to find also an inverse correlation between the …

Eighty-five elementary school counselors and 85 school psychologists were identified as working together within public school systems across seven Iowa Area Education Agencies. Subjects were matched by the elementary school in which they both work. The subjects were asked to respond to a questionnaire regarding which …

The Relationship Between Verbal-Performance Iq And Locus Of Control Among Students With Either A Learning Disability Or A Behavior Disorder, Rick J. Bagnall Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Verbal-Performance Iq And Locus Of Control Among Students With Either A Learning Disability Or A Behavior Disorder, Rick J. Bagnall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Locus of control is one psychological variable which can explain differences in how students deal with difficulties and how they explain these difficulties to themselves. Studies conducted with students who have emotional and behavioral problems have described them as having an external locus of control when compared to their peers (Kauffman, 1985; Morse, Cutler, & Fink, 1964).

In attempts to find identifying charateristics unique to behaviorally disordered students, research by Dean (1978), using emotionally handicapped children, determined that they had a significantly lower Verbal IQ mean than that obtained on the Performance IQ scale p<.01. The differences between Verbal and Performance IQs were not significant for learning disabled children.

The purpose of this study …

This investigation centers on the impact the computer, as an instrument, has on computer anxiety. Other variables examined were gender, age, academic experience, and computer experience. Eighty-three rural Iowa high school juniors and seniors were administered a Computer Opinion Survey {Maurer & Simonson, 1984) as a measure of computer anxiety. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a control group that completed the survey using the traditional paper and pencil method, or an experimental group which completed the survey by entering their responses at a computer terminal. It was anticipated that if the computer were a major factor in increasing computer …

Leadership: An Empirical Test Of A Communication Competency Model, Sara Lynn Cornette Jan 1990

Leadership: An Empirical Test Of A Communication Competency Model, Sara Lynn Cornette

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study sought to discover if a relationship exists between a group leader's communication competency and the outcomes of group interaction. This relationship is hypothesized in a model of leadership proposed by Barge and Hirokawa (1989). Specifically, the study compared a leader's task and relational competency levels with the outcomes of perceived leadership effectiveness, group satisfaction, and group cohesiveness. This research studied groups from recognized student organizations at a midwestern university. Groups studied came from organizations classified as either governmental, honorary, interest, or religious in nature. This study examined three hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 stated that when relational goals are most …
