The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst Jan 1992

The School Counselor's Role In Working With Elementary Students Diagnosed With Cancer, Sherrie J. Zeutenhorst

Graduate Research Papers

The annual incidence of pediatric cancers in the United States is approximately 12 per 100,000 children and six to seven thousand cases are diagnosed each year. Cancer accounts for the greatest number of disease-related deaths in children under 16 years of age, exceeded only by accidents. Fifty to sixty percent of cancer patients achieve a 5-year disease-free survival and possible cure (Ross, 1984; Perry & Flanagan, 1986; Spinetta & Deasy-Spinetta, 1981).

A Rationale For Enhancing The Role Of The Non-School Voluntary Sector In Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Karen Pittman, Marlene Wright, Geeta Tate

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Growing awareness of the seriousness of youth problems in this country (e.g., substance abuse, delinquency, early pregnancy, early school leaving) and of the magnitude of these problems compared to those experienced by youth in other countries has led policymakers, practitioners, and the general public to agree with the above statement. We, as a society, are not offering something to our young people that we should be. The questions that need to be answered are obvious: What are we doing wrong? How did it happen? How do we change the situation? In the spirit of this concern, we explore in this …

Strategies For Strengthening Institutional Mission, Irene Chalmers-Neubauer Jan 1992

Strategies For Strengthening Institutional Mission, Irene Chalmers-Neubauer

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

To achieve Postulate One, the central administration of an institution must first establish a communication infrastructure which promotes a continuous free flow of information from the president's office to the faculty and the student body and from the faculty and the student body to the president's office. Second, a statement of beliefs, also known as a mission statement or philosophy, must be identified. Only then can the faculty set up long- and short-term goals. Third, an established procedure for encouraging dialogue between all participants must be established, perhaps in the form of monthly meetings and working subcommittees. These three points …

Institutional Mission: Acquiring A Mindset For Teacher Education Reform, Augusta A. Clark Jan 1992

Institutional Mission: Acquiring A Mindset For Teacher Education Reform, Augusta A. Clark

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Postulate One reminds the writer of the gap between reality and rhetoric. Is this the way it should be? The answer is "yes." Is this the way it really is? One seriously doubts it.

In addition to the readings for this issue group, I have been involved in dialogue with several of my colleagues on the topic of educating educators. Individuals comprising this small, unscientific sampling include a former dean of a college of education, a former college professor, two coordinators of student teaching programs, and a chairperson of a behavioral science department. My own educational experiences have been primarily …

Who Should Teach The Teachers? Reflections On Goodlad's Postulate Four, James Marshall Jan 1992

Who Should Teach The Teachers? Reflections On Goodlad's Postulate Four, James Marshall

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In one sense it is virtually impossible to object to Goodlad's (1990) recommendations for a clearly identifiable faculty in teacher education programs. If such programs are to have coherence and integrity, it seems obvious that someone will have to take charge - admitting students, orchestrating the curriculum, and devising some sensible method of evaluating those students and that curriculum. Too often, Goodlad reminds us, our programs have fared badly with the public and with the academy because they have remained stepchildren: they are the second or third priority of tenure-track faculty or the first priority of adjunct faculty and graduate …

The Common Denominators Of World Class Schools, Roger Ohde Jan 1992

The Common Denominators Of World Class Schools, Roger Ohde

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

National attention is being focused on education as our nation strives to have what is being termed "world class schools." All facets of our educational process will be subjected to examination as we strive to elevate our level of achievement. One small but vital link in the process involves the preparation of our nation's teachers.

Change in American society has been dramatic and will continue at an even faster pace in the decades ahead. Changes, however, have not occurred as dramatically in the process and preparation of our nation's future teachers. As we begin the process of certification through the …

Implications Of Goodlad's "Good Stewardship" For Field-Based Teacher Education, Michael Vavrus Jan 1992

Implications Of Goodlad's "Good Stewardship" For Field-Based Teacher Education, Michael Vavrus

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In Teachers for Our Nation's Schools John Goodlad (1990) calls for programs which develop within education students a profound democratic consciousness for assisting them to understand the inevitable tensions between unquestioned routines, research and theory-supported practices. Furthermore, such approaches are to take place in "exemplary schools," followed with assistance to recent graduates for "easing the critical early years of transition into teaching" (pp. 61-62).

Imbedded throughout Goodlad's Postulates* is the notion that teacher education students must internalize the "good stewardship" dimension of teaching (p. 51). One key aspect of this stewardship, which is intended to empower teachers to renew schools, …

The Case Of Teaching: Teacher Work, Beryl Wellborn Jan 1992

The Case Of Teaching: Teacher Work, Beryl Wellborn

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The education of educators qualifying them for initial licensure and renewal of licensure for teaching has been restrained for at least 150 years by the state continually increasing the number of mandated requirements. Their implementation usually cans for increasing the number of either or both academic and professional courses, plus increased study in the area of social concerns (Herbst, 1989; Warren, 1989).

In recent years, we have witnessed states also enacting accountability legislation in the form of performance-based education and competency-based teacher-training, and state-prepared teacher tests which must be passed by those seeking initial licensure or renewal of licensure. Finally, …

The Behavioral And Emotional Effects Of Parental Divorce On Elementary School Children, Alice K. Kauten Jan 1992

The Behavioral And Emotional Effects Of Parental Divorce On Elementary School Children, Alice K. Kauten

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce has two purposes: The first purpose is to escape from the married partner and the marriage, while the second purpose is the hope of starting a new and happier life (Wallerstein & Blakeslee, 1989). Many people believe that time heals the hurt that canes from divorce. However, the painful effects can last for many years.

Gilligan's Theory Of Women's Moral Development: Implications For Student Affairs Practitioners, Ivonne Arroyo Picard Jan 1992

Gilligan's Theory Of Women's Moral Development: Implications For Student Affairs Practitioners, Ivonne Arroyo Picard

Graduate Research Papers

More and more educators are beginning to recognize the difference between the moral development of men and women. Rogers (1989) found patterns in recent research that revealed the nontraditional "feminine" characteristics of care, empowerment, cooperation and emphasis on relationships are starting to be valued, and that there is less emphasis on the traditional male oriented values of competition and independence. Rogers also suggested that the difference between the moral orientation of men and women is a controversial theme that calls for a redefinition of human nature. According to Rogers, "in the heart of this redefinition will be a realization of …

Recent Trends In Hazing And Alternatives For Student Affairs Professionals, Joyce S. Morrow Jan 1992

Recent Trends In Hazing And Alternatives For Student Affairs Professionals, Joyce S. Morrow

Graduate Research Papers

The growth of fraternity and sorority membership on many campuses and the increase in the number of reported hazing-related deaths and accidents has brought hazing under public and university scrutiny. What was once considered a harmless rite of passage is seen increasingly as causing psychological and physical harm to our young adults.

Portfolios For Authentic Assessment In Higher Education, Jeannie L. Steele Jan 1992

Portfolios For Authentic Assessment In Higher Education, Jeannie L. Steele

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Assessment has long been a fortress in American education. For almost as long, assessment has been the subject of considerable debate. In fact, William James in 1899 complained about technological test practices which required subjects to respond to test items which had, "no practical significance outside the 'test’” (p. 130). Recently, the chorus of complaints has grown louder and is being led by a host of educators and researchers (Darling-Hammond, 1990). Concern has been expressed regarding the construct and content validity of many standardized measures in all educational areas (Steele & Meredith, 1991). Yet, the age of assessment seems only …

An Analysis Of The Exercise Adherence And Attrition Of Participants In A University Wellness Fitness Program, Michelle Lynn Rosel Jan 1992

An Analysis Of The Exercise Adherence And Attrition Of Participants In A University Wellness Fitness Program, Michelle Lynn Rosel

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate the exercise adherence of participants in a university Wellness program. More specificly, this study will determine reasons why some people adhere to exercise programs and others drop out.

The subjects consisted of university students (n=l43), employees (n=l5), retirees (n=J), and their family members (n=7) who were enrolled in the wellness program fitness classes. The sample of subjects (158 females and 10 males) was limited to persons who were registered to participate in aqua trim, high impact aerobics, low impact aerobics, and step aerobic classes for the Spring 1992 Semester. A researcher generated …

The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus Jan 1992

The Impact Of Childhood Death On The Surviving Sibling, Patricia J. Rottinghaus

Graduate Research Papers

When a child is dying of kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, or cancer, the child is referred to as "the victim of chronic or terminal illness". That child is not the only victim. The destructive effects of such diseases spread to all members of the families of those affected. New events and activities such as the care of the patient, trips to the hospital, and absences of family members due to hospitalizations become a part of the everyday lives of these families. Family life, as it was once known, no longer appears to exist. Even periods of remission of the child's …

Children Of Alcoholics: Implications For Counselors And Schools, Martha Jean Mcnutt Port Jan 1992

Children Of Alcoholics: Implications For Counselors And Schools, Martha Jean Mcnutt Port

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is a disease of epidemic proportions in the United States. It is estimated that one-fifth of all Americans are problem drinkers (Cook, 1987). While alcoholism is generally recognized as a disease, it is not widely recognized as a family disease (Weddle & Wishon, 1986). However, alcoholism is a family illness because everyone in the family suffers. Parental alcoholism is a form of psychological maltreatment of 12-15 million children under the age of 18 (Tharinger & Koranek, 1988). McBride and Bennet (1991), Weddle and Wishon (1986), Roosa, Sandler, Gehring, Beals, and Cappo (1988), and Campbell (1988) all indicated that the …

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson Jan 1992

Working With Stepchildren: The Role Of The School Counselor, Susan M. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The structure of the family is constantly changing. Cherlin and Furstenberg (1983) predicted that by the year 2000, families of remarriages will be one of the types of families that dominate the personal lives of most Americans. A "remarried family" involves a married couple with the husband, the wife, or both in a second or subsequent marriage. Children under 18 in the home who were born before the remarriage occurred are considered stepchildren in the constituted stepfamily (Glick, 1988). Glick also reported that stepfamilies currently represent 17.4% of households with children under age 18 (Sims & Crosbie-Burnett, 1989).

The Influence Of Academic Advising And Retention Programs On Minority Students' Matriculation, Celeste F. Bland Jan 1992

The Influence Of Academic Advising And Retention Programs On Minority Students' Matriculation, Celeste F. Bland

Graduate Research Papers

"Since the founding of Harvard University in 1636, institutions of higher education have been concerned with students leaving college prior to completing degree requirements" (Jackson, 1992, p.14). The complex ways in which people learn and ultimately persist while attending institutions of higher education is not easily understood or formulated. As research indicates, minority students on predominantly white institutions have particular needs which must be met in order to enhance their achievement and persistence on college campuses (Allen, 1992). Many minority students encounter a variety of problems while enrolled at predominantly white institutions; therefore, there is a need for fresh, innovative, …

The Proper Role Of The State In Transforming Education, Thomas J. Switzer Jan 1992

The Proper Role Of The State In Transforming Education, Thomas J. Switzer

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

"The appropriate role of the state is to establish outcome expectations for teacher education graduates; the appropriate role of the university is to determine the curriculum, standards and internal policies for teacher education program." (The Renaissance Group, 1989, p. 3)

This principle, one of 12 such principles developed by the Renaissance Group to guide their efforts toward the improvement of teacher education, expresses to a large extent my position on the role of the state in transforming elementary, secondary and collegiate education. (The Renaissance Group is a confederation of 14 universities with a long history and current commitment to quality …

Teacher Education: Whose Discipline Is It?, Marlene I. Strathe Jan 1992

Teacher Education: Whose Discipline Is It?, Marlene I. Strathe

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Krathwohl (1985) has defined a discipline as an organized field of inquiry which explains a domain using discipline developed theories, constructs and methods. Such an organized field is derived from the results of inquiry conducted by individuals who perceive themselves as scholars of the field. The question of who should be responsible for teacher education is fundamentally a question of who is concerned with research which advances the field of teacher education as a discipline.

Teaching The Logic Of Falsification: A Classroom Excercise, David Lopatto Jan 1992

Teaching The Logic Of Falsification: A Classroom Excercise, David Lopatto

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Every science teacher soon discovers that the intuitions students use to solve problems are frequently at variance with the critical thinking skills required by science. 1be exercise presented here focuses on the value of making scientific hypotheses and then attempting to falsify rather than confirm them. When challenged to test a hypothesis, intuitive thinkers tend to show a confirmation bias, i.e., they will propose a test in which the results will be a positive instance of the hypothesis (Einhorn and Hogarth, 1978; Wason, 1960). Scientists, on the other hand, know that tests are specific instances that cannot inductively ''prove" the …

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long Jan 1992

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The Institute for Youth Leaders' 1992 National Youth Leadership Symposium contributed to the emerging youth development profession and attending academic discipline through a formal examination of the principles of moving " theory into practice." This theme was selected as the next step in a logical sequence of symposia themes. In 1990 the gathering established agreement on the critical competencies needed in youth development professional practice. The 1991 experience built on the set of competencies with the identification of common ground for professional development among the organizations serving the needs of youth. With agreement on the needed competencies and the common …

Student Affairs: In Search Of Ethics, Christine E. Hobbs

Graduate Research Papers

Recently, ethics has been a topic that higher education administrators have been examining with intense interest. Ethics and moral responsibility are the themes for educational journal articles, book chapters, and conferences. This interest has led many institutions of higher education in search of ethical standards and guidelines for their professional staffs. There are several reasons that ethics has come to the forefront.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Sally A. Strottman Jan 1992

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Sally A. Strottman

Graduate Research Papers

I decided to pursue a Master's Degree in Educational Administration after being encouraged by my school principal. She saw in me several personal characteristics she believed necessary for an elementary principal: a willingness to undertake tasks requiring time and organization, the ability to work with others to implement ideas into actions and complete a task, and the possession of ample communication skills to relate to a diversity of publics. Since I had been very active in several community organizations and was willing to assume some leadership roles in the school setting, this seemed a natural route for me to take.
