Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

The Psychoanalytic Id And The Transactional Analysis "Child", Robert D. Peterson Jan 1995

The Psychoanalytic Id And The Transactional Analysis "Child", Robert D. Peterson

Graduate Research Papers

The way in which a person perceives other human beings is a key element in determining his or her interactions with others (Alexander & Neimeyer, 1989); for educators, who frequently have major impacts on students and on the community at large, this perception of others is particularly important. This conceptualization of human nature is sometimes referred to as the individual's "personality construct", with the term "construct" implying "a complex image or idea formed from a number of simpler images or ideas" (Stein, 196 7, p. 314). An individual's image of others consists of, but is not limited to, his or …

Toward A Youth Development Profession, Karen Pittman, Elaine Johnson Jan 1995

Toward A Youth Development Profession, Karen Pittman, Elaine Johnson

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Earlier in this Symposium I talked about what I thought were some of the issues facing the profession and there was a very relevant discussion this morning about the attributes of the profession. Perhaps in this room there is a rather nonrepresentative sample of people who, if I say, "Are you a youth development professional?" will say, "yes." When you tell people what you do, how many people use that term or something close to it when they describe what they do? Two. How many use "youth worker?" Four. Any other generic term that says what you do? Recreation Director, …

Attributes Of A Profession, Anne Federlein Jan 1995

Attributes Of A Profession, Anne Federlein

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

This morning as we think of ourselves as professionals, we need to reflect on our training. Our training today, unfortunately, looks very much like the training most of us went through years ago. Yet we are living in a changing world. We are training students to be professionals in a world that you and I have never seen. We have absolutely no idea at this point what the year 2090 is going to look like because we are changing the face of all of our professions, even though we are all under this "youth leadership/ early childhood/human services" profession. In …

A Personal Vision Of The Principalship And The Ideal School: A Reflective Essay, Corwin R. Dunlap Jan 1995

A Personal Vision Of The Principalship And The Ideal School: A Reflective Essay, Corwin R. Dunlap

Graduate Research Papers

In reflecting on the more memorable events of my youth, a significant element began to emerge. Many of the most important of these events were centered around the activities associated with my elementary and high school education: past friendships, school organizations and activities, and those favorite teachers, who left a lasting impression on the person I was to become. These teachers influenced the direction my life was to take; becoming an educator. Regardless of the subject taught, the teachers I remembered most were the ones who made learning fun and exciting, and made me feel that I was someone special. …

Promoting A Positive Campus Climate For Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual College Students, Cindy Jo Haarstad

Graduate Research Papers

A review of the literature indicates that gay, lesbian, and bisexual students do not experience a positive campus climate while in college. Rather, statistics reveal that these students frequently contend with negative attitudes of others, discrimination, harassment, violence, rejection, isolation, and a lack of role models. This paper will attempt to define what the campus climate is currently like for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students and discuss strategies for promoting a positive campus climate. strategies for improving the campus climate include: comprehensively assessing campus climate; creating and supporting policies which are inclusive of sexual orientation; educating the campus community regarding …

The Psychology Of Menstruation, Natalie J. Martin Jan 1995

The Psychology Of Menstruation, Natalie J. Martin

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The menstrual cycle is not only a physiological experience, it is also a psychological, social, and cultural one. However, the majority of the research on menstruation views the experience of menstruation via the medical model. Through this lens, menstruation is not a natural, healthy part of a woman's experience, but a pathology requiring diagnosis and treatment. This study focuses on whether cultural and social expectations affect women's psychological evaluations of the menstrual experience, and particularly, whether identification with feminism affects attitudes toward menstruation and the physical and emotional symptoms experienced. Subjects were 87 college women who completed 30 days of …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joy Michelle Kelly Jan 1995

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Joy Michelle Kelly

Graduate Research Papers

My educational experiences from childhood are truly what motivated me to become a teacher, and I revisit some of those same experiences as I reflect upon my intentions to become a high school principal. I truly believe that I became a teacher because I knew I could have an impact on young people, both academically and personally, and ultimately I could make a difference in their lives. My personal experiences with the educational system have not always been positive, but, nonetheless, they have been motivating.

The Values, Beliefs, And Vision Of An Education Administrator: A Reflective Essay, John P. Trainor

Graduate Research Papers

I cannot always see where I am headed, but surely I can look back and see where I have been. The following essay is a reflection of this statement and my experience as a student in the Department of Education Administration and Counseling. I will analytically look at where I have been and synthesize a vision of where I am headed. Ideally I want this essay to meet the requirements of this program, and then go a step further and create a foundation that will aid my entry into the field of secondary administration.

Acquaintance Rape, Thomas A. Paulsen Jan 1995

Acquaintance Rape, Thomas A. Paulsen

Graduate Research Papers

Most people associate rape with strangers. More women fear being raped by a stranger than by an acquaintance and authorities are more likely to respond to reports of stranger rape than acquaintance rape (Abbey, 1991). Sexual aggression in dating situations, commonly called date rape or acquaintance rape, is more common and more serious than is often realized. Acquaintance rape occurs when the assailant and the victim know one another and is four times more likely to occur than stranger rape (Warshaw, 1988).

Assessment Instruments And Services Of A Career Center, James Arthur Merritt Jan 1995

Assessment Instruments And Services Of A Career Center, James Arthur Merritt

Graduate Research Papers

The wide range of clientele to be served through a community college's career assistance center is a challenging task. With a great proliferation of assessment tools available, such as aptitude and ability tests, interest inventories, personality inventories, values inventories, etc., it is difficult to select appropriate tools for use. The task is further complicated when considering the wide range of clientele that are seeking assistance on the community college campus. This includes the traditional student coming immediately out of high school and the non-traditional student that is seeking to attend college later in life--a population that includes dislocated workers, displaced …

Adolescent Sexuality: The Role Of Parents, School, And Counselor, Steven A. Montross Jan 1995

Adolescent Sexuality: The Role Of Parents, School, And Counselor, Steven A. Montross

Graduate Research Papers

The rate of teenage sexual involvement is at an all-time high. It is estimated that 11.6 million teenagers between the ages 13-19 have had sexual intercourse, resulting in over 800,000 teenage pregnancies each year. With statistics such as these, problems arise: sexually active teens are at risk for contracting diseases such as AIDS, teenage mothers may often drop out of school, and many teen mothers live in poverty (Christopher & Roosa, 1990). In addition, children learn facts about sex at younger ages than did their parents and grandparents. On the positive side, there is the increasing maternal effort to impart …

Process Of Educational Innovation: A Micropolitical Study Of The Implementation Of A Team Teaching Model, Bruce Steven Frana Jan 1995

Process Of Educational Innovation: A Micropolitical Study Of The Implementation Of A Team Teaching Model, Bruce Steven Frana

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This is a two-year case study, conducted in a large school district (over 10,000 students), of an attempt to introduce interdisciplinary team teaching at the high school level. The purpose of this study was to examine what teachers do and think as they engage in the process of implementing educational reform. I believed initially that the success or failure of educational reform depended largely on the actual teachers involved in implementing that reform. Once I was in the setting, however, it was clear that administrators must be included because reform depends on much more than what teachers do and think. …

Factor Analysis Of The Wais-R And Selected Indices Of The Wms-R, Kathy S. Hayward Jan 1995

Factor Analysis Of The Wais-R And Selected Indices Of The Wms-R, Kathy S. Hayward

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study replicates a study conducted by Harmon, Clausen, and Scott (1993) in which these researchers attempted to define the number of factors present in the cognitive factor structure of adults in a vocational rehabilitation setting. The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) and the Verbal Memory and Visual Memory Indices of the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) were the instruments used to define the factors in the Harmon et al. (1993) study as well as the current study. A larger sample size was utilized in the present study and went on to define the cognitive factor structure of these individuals by …

Childhood Obesity, Denise Kay Volker Jan 1995

Childhood Obesity, Denise Kay Volker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The contributing factors in childhood obesity include psychological, physical fitness, and social elements. Much previous literature has studied such variables in isolation or in limited combinations. There is a need for multivariate approaches to the research in childhood obesity. The research question in this study was to determine was there any relationship between the subjects self-esteem, psychological and health locus-of-control, nutritional knowledge, food choices, and physical fitness, that will significantly distinguish overweight and normal weight youth, as determined through the measures of the PiersHarris Children's Self Concept Scale (PHCSCS), the Nowick~Strickland Loc4s-of-Control scale (CNS-IE), the Multidimensional Health Locus-of-Control scale (MHLC), …

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson Jan 1995

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

he purpose of the present study was to identify the accuracy of sentence imitation and code-switching by the African-American child between the ages of 6 years O months and 7 years 2 months. Despite well documented descriptions of Black English (BE) phonology (Dillard, 1972; Labov, 1972; Wolfram & Fasold, 1974), little has been published about the emerging phonology of BE speaking children. Most descriptive studies of BE have focused on the adult system.

The present study investigated the following research questions, "Will African-American children in this study, when presented with the task of imitating BE and IE sentences, code-switch each …

Perceptions Of Children, Parents, And Teachers Regarding Low Academic Progress During Pre-Referral Intervention, Beth Ann Thompson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were two fold: (a) to describe the interplay of the variables such as low progress, communication, instruction and help for a child, interventions, consultation services, meetings between the school and home, and peers as perceived by elementary children who have low progress in at least one academic subject, their parents, and their teachers; and (b) to describe roles and responsibilities of the teachers, parents, and children as they participated in pre-referral activities.

Nine subjects participated in this study to compose three triads; one student from fourth-grade, the mother, and teacher; one student from fifth-grade, the …

The Treatment Of Voice In Some Of The Works Of Some Women Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance, Patrick Steven Bernard Jan 1995

The Treatment Of Voice In Some Of The Works Of Some Women Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance, Patrick Steven Bernard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examines the relation between the quest for identity-formation that characterized the Harlem Renaissance and the treatment of Voice by the women writers of the period to define their feminine identity. The concept of voice as used in this study refers to the method of self-expression and self-articulation to define the feminine subject by the women writers of the period. The importance of the Harlem Renaissance as a period of black self-determination is the main principle that is used here to particularize the feminine quest. The study looks at the Harlem Renaissance mainly from the perspective of the women …

Development And Initial Psychometric Properties Of The Adolescent Reasons For Living Inventory (Arfl), Tricia M. Besett Jan 1995

Development And Initial Psychometric Properties Of The Adolescent Reasons For Living Inventory (Arfl), Tricia M. Besett

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report measure for assessing adolescent suicidal behavior. This measure, the Adolescent Reasons For Living (ARFL), was modeled after the adult Reasons For Living Inventory (RFL) developed by Linehan, Goodstein, Nielsen, and Chiles (1983). Psychiatric inpatients, high school students, and college undergraduates were participants in this study. The development of the new measure closely followed the guidelines offered by DeVellis (1991) for designing new measures. The final version of the ARFL contained 35 items that loaded on six factors. The coefficients alpha were high and satisfactory. Significant differences were found between the …

Cognitive Rehabilitation In Mild To Moderate Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Comparison Of Pqrst And Think-Aloud Strategies, Kris Marie Franzen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study-investigated the effectiveness of Robinson's (1970) PQRST technique for improving reading comprehension in two 10 year old boys with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI). A counterbalanced cross-over design was utilized and Smith and Dauer's (1984) think-aloud technique was used as an attention control condition. A third, 10 year old, boy without a history of TBI also participated in the study for comparison purposes and received no active intervention. The PQRST technique was successful in improving several measures of reading comprehension. While the study was not designed to definitively identify the technique's generalizability or long-term benefits, effectiveness …
